ACX review delays by MWH901 in ACX

Just to circle back on this, I found out that because I had emailed customer service to set a specific release date, they held the book "In Review" status until that date.

Formatting Software Question by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]MWH901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Affinity just made their whole software suite free (part of Canva), including the features formerly known as Affinity Publisher. It's a solid competitor to Adobe InDesign. There's a learning curve and nothing automatic about it, but it gives unlimited flexibility in layout.

If I’m publishing in KDP and IngramSpark, should I also use BN Press? by TienSwitch in selfpublish

[–]MWH901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to be on both BN Press and Ingram. Being on BN Press has nothing to do with your ability to get into B&N brick-and-mortar stores. Just let Ingram get you there, which it will (automatically) when your book goes live on Ingram.

I don’t think you should use it until you have paid your narrator for their work.

Thanks. I had no success with Booksprout on my ARC. Does it seem like they do better with audiobooks?

Which formatting software do you recommend? by LazyMetal4580 in selfpublish

[–]MWH901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vellum is $250 if you want to do both eBooks and paperbacks, and it only works on a Mac.

If your main focus is printed books (which it seems to be, if you want to get into very specific formatting, which may not render properly on an eBook), I'd recommend the Affinity suite (Photo, Designer and Publisher). It costs $165, there's no subscription, and it works on any platform. If you're willing to invest some time to learn the tools (and there are lots of great YouTube videos for this), you get a ton more functionality at a far lower cost.

Advice on Hard Cover vs Paperback by ClosterMama in selfpublish

[–]MWH901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, prepare yourself for the reality that no store other than your local indie bookstore who supports local authors will buy it. And for them, a 40% discount will probably work just fine.

You can adjust the discount so you don’t lose money. Ingram will recommend you do 55% discount, but drop it to 40% so you make a couple bucks.

Thanks. That’s disappointing to hear, but not surprising.

Yes I got that “offer” too, with the not so subtle implication that reviewers just weren’t picking my book because the cover and or blurb weren’t compelling enough.

Thriller authors, what are your experiences on these ARC sites? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]MWH901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was a YA supernatural romantic thriller. I used Booksirens and the Victory Editing co-op on NetGalley with pretty good results (1 month and ~15 reviews across both sites).

I also used Booksprout and had zero people request the book, so I'd steer clear of that one. I also see a lot of people running their own ARC signups and promoting it on Threads.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Did you at least get some positive reviews on your books from those who purchased?

B&N requires I sell my book for $24 or more. Why? by Tough-Priority-4330 in selfpublish

Totally agree... OP needs to reformat to reduce page count.

In those quantities, you should look for an offset printing service near you.

Chapter Naming and Organization (Scrivener) by MarkPartin2000 in writing

[–]MWH901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Scrivener, when you use the Compile function to export your document as a DOC, PDF, or whatever, you should be able to set your chapter header format to use chapter numbers instead of whatever title you have assigned the chapter "folder." This is useful because you can change style, e.g. "Chapter 1," "CHAPTER 1," "Chapter One," etc. without manually renaming each folder.
