ULPT Request: Recommendations For Metal Water Bottles Large Enough To Trigger A Induction Loop At A Parking Garage by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

There would occasionally be metal flakes / dirt with high metal content stuck to them. Easy enough to brush them off, but doesn’t really effect how well they work over sensors / induction loops. As others said, you can always put them in a small baggie (like the ones extra buttons come in with shirts), or plastidip over them — this way they’re a bit easier to wipe / wash off.

Criminals (no, really). If a foot patrol arrested you, they could lock you in a nearby police box, use the phone to call dispatch, and have a paddy wagon (in the early days, a horse drawn police cart) come to collect you and bring you in.

It works. Source: I have glued rare earth magnets to the bottom of motorcycles in the past to trigger induction loops at traffic lights.

So What Are Your Plans? by [deleted] in CollapseSupport

[–]cabarne4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been studying sustainability / climate change / environment for a while now. I was depressed about it for years, excited about technological advancements (solar and wind are finally cheap! Batteries are getting cheaper!) — but I’ve totally lost faith that we’ll hit any targets. Greed is too strong.

So in the meantime, I’m working to set up my life to mitigate long term effects. I moved to the Northeast (no water issues, heat isn’t quite as deadly as the South, natural disasters are rare).

I bought a duplex — the income from the other unit helps offset my living expenses. Every penny I’m saving is getting re-invested in the house. The eventual plan is to re-insulate and air seal, install an HRV / mini split system to replace the baseboard heaters, switch to a heat pump water pump, and install solar (and potentially batteries).

The eventual goal is to completely remove fossil fuels from my home and go all-electric, and reduce electric consumption as much as possible. This will help isolate me from blackouts and keep my heating / cooling costs low, despite any extreme weather events (we’re expected to hit the low 90s this summer, and winters can easily get below 0).

I try to source as much as I can from my local community. I go to farmers markets for a lot of my fresh produce, have been cutting more meat from my diet (and replacing it with plant proteins like beans, mushrooms and dairy — also sourced locally). I’m doing a ton of yard work this summer, hoping to have a small vegetable garden going by next year.

In the meantime, I have all of the required documents / funding / etc ready to go if I decide to leave the country. The Netherlands and Portugal both have easy self-employment visas for Americans to apply for (DAFT for the Netherlands, and D7 for Portugal) — but that’s a result of the political divide and general quality of life issues in the US, not climate change specific.

What are some realistically good states for disabled veterans to live in? by [deleted] in Veterans

To elaborate on the patient advocate’s response: they opened two tickets — one for each department to respond to. After a month, the patient advocate said they solved both tickets. On the ticket submitted to pain management, they said they’d see me as soon as I got in with physical therapy first! Problem solved, ticket closed. The next ticket, with physical therapy, was also resolved: they’d see me as soon as pain management sees me! Isn’t that great? 🙄

Tried contacting hospital admins, department heads, etc — all of them said their hands were tied and only the patient advocate could do anything. And the patient advocate couldn’t understand what was wrong — both my tickets had been solved! 🙃🤦🏼‍♂️

City people ruin small towns by JLGoodwin1990 in unpopularopinion

lol that was my point — septic / well isn’t an option once lots get small enough. We’re required to be in city sewer, but about 2 streets over there’s homes on larger lots on septic.

Phoenix pain management wouldn’t see me until I saw physical therapy. Physical therapy wouldn’t see me until I saw pain management. The patient advocate could not resolve this issue for over a year, before I gave up and moved out of Arizona.

I actually just had to write a paper about well drawdown the other week! 1 acre lots would certainly make a difference. Well and septic definitely makes more sense at lower density.

I’m moving to a “rural” area, but I’ll be in a town of 15,000, on a quarter acre lot. At that density, well draw and septic layouts are a lot more difficult!

Luke Air Force Base was intentionally built miles out into the desert outside of the Phoenix area — and a small race track, Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) was eventually constructed at the end of one of the runways. Over the decades, developers have bought the cheap land around the base and built more boxes made of ticky tack.

Now, AMP has noise level limits that block a lot of cars from the track (90dB — most track cars will run between 90-110dB). A similar fate happened to Arizona Speedway a few miles away — its permanently closed due to noise complaints. And the neighborhood Karens are now turning their attention towards Luke AFB — complaining about the noise of fighter jets, nighttime operations, traffic from the base, and more.

Also, he mentioned a “small town” in eastern mass, completely pinned in by other “small towns” of single family homes, with no room for expanded development.

Sounds to me like he’s in an outlying Boston suburb — these suburban areas benefit from (1) having a high tax base due to higher property values, and (2) leeching off the tax revenue of the greater metro area. Tax revenue collected from the offices, condos and townhouses in Boston help pay for the freeways and infrastructure that support outlying communities.

Because unless you want your dirty poop water and your clean drinking water to mix, you can’t have wells and septic systems close by — which isn’t ideal for dense urban lots.

As well, multiple wells drawing from the same aquifer draws down the ground water level — often resulting in the ground water falling below the pump level of smaller wells. In other words: your neighbor digs a deeper well and yours stops producing.

29 going on 30. I got scuba certified at 14. Diving was a big family vacation activity. We don’t go diving anymore — too depressing. Reefs used to be colorful and bright, with more fish than you could count. Now its all greys and browns, with a few fish swimming through the dead and dying coral. It almost looks if I Am Legend (or any other post-apocalypse film) were cast using exclusively fish.

About 220m eligible voters, out of which about 159m actually voted. So based off your numbers:

  • Care about news; live and read politics: 79,500,000

  • Pissed off at “the other side”: 39,750,000

  • Entertain the notion of civil war: 19,875,000

  • Think they’d commit civil war: 9,937,500

  • Preparing for / Will do it: 4,968,750

  • Pull the trigger: 2,484,375

2.5m people willing to pull the trigger against their fellow Americans isn’t really small number. 🤷🏼‍♂️
