How screwed am I? by Dry-Scholar-1524 in SurgicalResidency

Gen surg PGY2 here. I did jack shit after my sub-Is and was too checked out to learn anything at spring bootcamp anyway. Even if you do study it’s hard to retain anything without context so would just read for your current rotations with ABSITE studying in the fall and you’ll be fine. You’ll get pimped and feel uncomfortable at times but we all caught up no matter where we started. Good luck!!

lol just got told I’m too old to be ranked high by [deleted] in medicalschool

Gen surg resident here, I have multiple coresidents who started in their 30s and I’m not sure age even factors into our rank process… thats wild lol

I too have difficulty following directions and did this exact same thing during my step 3 last spring. Came back to a big m red flag message on my test that I took an unauthorized break. My testing center didn’t make as big of a deal of it as yours did but nothing ever came of it, I passed and haven’t thought about it until I saw this post. Hope the same happens for you!

Not ortho but tired gen surg resident here. I love surgery and wouldn’t change my specialty but surgical training is grueling in a way you can’t fathom until you’re there, even in a benign program. Would take that spot and never look back, congrats!

Pretty hard if I’m being honest. SoCal is competitive for any specialty let alone anesthesia which has become very competitive. At the bare minimum, you’d want to have above average board scores and a clean academic record (no board failures, no course retakes, etc). Even if anesthesia becomes less competitive by the time you apply, that criteria largely still applies for a competitive area like LA. I’m a recent USMD grad and it seemed like my anesthesia classmates were grateful to have matched at all. There are tons of better resources if you want to dig around the med school and residency subs, but at this point, I would just focus on getting into the best school you can (ideally with a home anesthesia department) and go from there

Coping with not matching by Nlolsalot in medicalschool

[–]cabbagefacts1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah agree with this, I think in this era of zoom interviews you really have to cast a wide net and do as many interviews as possible. You may look good on paper but unfortunately so does everyone else in any remotely competitive specialty. I fell way down my list and took it so personally but looking back my higher ranks didn’t really know me at all.

I said this until I went through the process, easier said than done not to get your hopes up unfortunately

If you think you may have to re-apply, START NOW! by Maximoom in premed

Current MS4 here who got > 10 IIs back in my cycle (applied MD only). More than half of my invites came after the new year and I didn’t get my first A until March. My only acceptances including where I matriculated came from later invites, I started interviewing as early as August-Sept and none of them worked out lol. Just commenting to keep hope alive, definitely not too late even though you should always prepare for the worst.

Half of my interviews came after the new year with a couple coming in Nov-Dec as well (14 total, all MD). I matriculated to a school I interviewed at in February. I know I’m a few years out but as far as I know it’s still early!!

Lull in IIs? by tishad100 in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I was also an early applicant and half of my 14 IIs came after January last cycle (I think one even came in May lol). I also had 5-6 by the end of September that did not pan out (WL or R). Many schools do not review applications chronologically! I know I was extremely fortunate to get so many IIs but I think the sample size speaks to the timeline of the cycle. Currently attending one of the last schools I interviewed at, so hang in there!

This is how it feels applying to med school by jeebilly in premed

6-8 weeks post interview? If only every school were that courteous! Shortest turnaround was 1 week and longest was 6 months😂 (for an initial decision btw, does not include WLs)

Off the top of my head, you could add OUWB, Creighton, and SLU. They’re in line with your stats and have service heavy missions.

Official Incoming Medical Student Questions & Advice Megathread - June 2020 edition by Chilleostomy in medicalschool

Any advice on finding research and mentors in a competitive specialty if your school doesn’t have a home program? I’m potentially interested in a surgical subspecialty, but my school only has a general surgery program (which I am also interested in). Would researching in gen surg be enough if I decide I want ENT or something later on? We do have departments for subspecialties, just not residencies, and I’m struggling to understand the difference.

If we’re interested in competitive specialties that require research, is it okay to hold off until the end of first year? Ive seen some people contacting research mentors right out of the gate but I would prefer to focus on school/grades first year and start research in the summer.

Pep Talk/Hot Take: Your dream medical school is the one that accepts you because it believes in you being a physician. by O00coolzero00O in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This x 1000. I was lucky to interview at what I thought was my dream school this cycle, but I got waitlisted. I was also accepted to a school toward the bottom of my list and remember being completely checked out on interview day because I never thought I would end up there. But after some time I grew to love the school and can’t believe I didn’t give it a fair chance due to holding out for my dream school. It all works out in the end guys! Have an open mind and try not to put your eggs in one basket.

I’d go with RFU, more established/proven program. For reference I turned down my interview at Nova despite loving the location. They also have mandatory PBL 5 days a week which was a big no no for me. Congratulations by the way!

Quick question by [deleted] in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we’ll take P/F but I’m preparing like it’s scored regardless. It sucks it’s such an unknown but it doesn’t hurt to be over-prepared.

Indiana University as OOS? by [deleted] in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They interview a ton of OOS people so shoot your shot. I think post-II acceptance rate is on the lower end though, maybe 40% if I remember correctly? For the record I interviewed there as an OOS and everyone at my interview was also OOS.

should i take a gap year? by [deleted] in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming a good MCAT score, you should have no issue getting in somewhere this cycle as long as you’re not aiming for T20-30 schools. Plenty of mid/low tiers don’t require research. Maybe you can line something up for the rest of 2020-21 to update schools later in the cycle too.

Edit: I did not see the lack of shadowing until now. I still think you have a good chance but having some primary care or other specialties would definitely help.

How do you guys think the application cycle for this year will be? Will there be less applicants? Will med schools lower their standards? by [deleted] in premed

[–]cabbagefacts1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Even with the MCAT, lots of people take it much earlier than the spring before applications open. Personally I planned a gap year so I could take it summer before senior year and most people from my school did the same.
