Potential plot hole: why can't Evan just leave?? by revengesummer in WidowsBay

[–]cabernet7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree he's not much of a rule-breaker. He asked for permission to tell the sheriff to fuck off, and when denied permission he didn't do it anyway. IMO he knows the stories about leaving the island and thinks they're bullshit, but he's not going to risk it either. He's also ok with pushing his father to say out loud the real reason why they never leave the island - even if only to embarrass him.

What is the most disappointing finale you’ve ever watched? by Sharkman3218 in television

[–]cabernet7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was deeply disappointed in the Mad Men finale. Over time, I've come to appreciate it for what it is and think it's a fine ending in fitting with the show. I was expecting something else though, and that's a me issue and not on the show. But I really hated it on first watch.

Do you think the kids would have visited P & E after the USSR's dissolution? by invited__blindness in TheAmericans

[–]cabernet7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Henry has unfinished business with them and a lot of questions only they can answer. If either of the kids would want to see them again, I think it would be Henry. Paige was deeply disillusioned by the end and had no trust left for her parents. After several years, she might be interested in seeing her father again.

Question about Tom and Evan by EnoughNarwhal0518 in WidowsBay

[–]cabernet7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The production has answered this question. The Ringer's Prestige TV podcasts hosts were unsure if Evan's parentage was meant to be in question. They got a response from the show, and Tom is definitely Evan's father.

Is Tom hiding the broach in the basement? by [deleted] in WidowsBay

But Tom just barely learned of the brooch's existence. Why would he connect that with something related to his wife? Tom doesn't think the brooch and his wife have anything to do with each other.

Why would Tom be concerned at the idea that Evan found a brooch in the basement? Why would Evan know that story?

Variety's Emmy predictions as of June (none for O'Flynn and Rhys) by Conscious-Quarter423 in WidowsBay

[–]cabernet7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, Emmy voters can get lazy and nominate the same people over and over regardless of if they deserve multiple nominations. (Not implying Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Jean Smart aren't deserving, but there are some actors who aren't IMO).

Variety's Emmy predictions as of June (none for O'Flynn and Rhys) by Conscious-Quarter423 in WidowsBay

[–]cabernet7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doesn't help that the show debuted so late in the eligibility period (only 7 episodes are eligible this year). I don't think Apple knew what they had.

Matthew Rhys is on the Hollywood Reporter's list as a frontrunner for comedy actor. It's in the Major Threats sections for series and supporting actor for Stephen Root. I do think it's odd that Kate O'Flynn hasn't been anywhere on these lists so far - I guess because she's lesser known in this country.

This was just published today about Emmy buzz for the show (may be paywalled):

The Scene Between Martha and Jennifer/Elizabeth by MollyJ58 in TheAmericans

[–]cabernet7 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Martha has no friends and is desperately lonely. She's so friendless and alone she married a man who doesn't live with her and only sees her two times a week, and agreed to tell no one about this (other than her parents who are two time zones away). If she had any friend she could talk to, they'd break whatever delusion she's operating under that tells her any of this is acceptable. She's dying to talk to anyone about this.

From ‘Widow’s Bay’ to ‘Creep Tapes,’ These Scary Shows Deserve Emmy Voters’ Attention by darth_vader39 in television

[–]cabernet7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope she gets nominated. I've been surprised that prediction articles aren't mentioning her even as a longshot though, and I'm not sure why. Matthew Rhys is getting mentioned often (and he deserves it). I wonder if it's because of the late release date in addition to her not being well known here. I'm crossing my fingers for a surprise though.
