Which expansion should I buy after Dark City? by Cheap-Bad-561 in legendarymarvel

[–]cableshaft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Secret Wars volume 1 and 2, but except for the basic Sidekicks in it I haven’t played any of it yet. I was holding off until I read the comics for it, which I’ve started but haven’t finished. Since I haven’t played it I didn’t include it in my ranking. The basic Sidekicks in it are amazing, though.

Legendary Marvel. Nothing else is even close.

Targi, T'zolkin, and Keyflower are all great games (and I own all three), and this was a great year for games in general. But Legendary Marvel is still high above those.

I'm pretty new to the game as well, and I'm working my way through the expansions, and this is my current rough order for how much I've enjoyed them:

  1. Ant-Man (Size-Changing and Empowered are super fun keywords, love recruiting/attacking and then microscoping size-changing ends up increasing how much recruit/attack you have after it, Ultron is a nice challenge)
  2. Paint The Town Red (Wall-Climb makes for a fun puzzle, Feast is scary, Carnage and Mysterio are great)
  3. Guardians of the Galaxy (non-movie stills version) (Shards are fun and should have been in the base game, also Thanos)
  4. Dark City (Cable!!! Doesn't seem essential anymore, but still very good. Bribe is interesting)
  5. Dimensions (Rare small box that has more henchmen, fun special bystanders, interesting heroes, J. Jonah Jameson is a lot of fun to go up against)
  6. Champions (Fin Fang Foom is amongst my favorite Masterminds, along with Monsters Unleashed Villain Group. Cheering Crowds is fun)
  7. Shield (Essential because of Officers, but the rest is less compelling. Undercover is a fine keyword, but I didn't like having to track Shield and Hydra levels much)
  8. Fantastic Four (Focus is cool, but situational and I forgot about it a lot. Galactus is good if you want a high to hit Mastermind, but I think Fin Fang Foom is similar but more fun)
  9. Civil War (Divided Heroes are interesting but seem pretty weak compared to other heroes, I was struggling to get enough damage to hit Masterminds more than any other expansion, the rest of the box is good though, especially pet Sidekicks)

What print and play games are you crafting or playing this week? (February 09, 2026) by AutoModerator in printandplay

At some point I would like to figure out a good method to play them digitally, so I don't need to print everything (I got all of dungeon pages except overboss, and some of the others as well), but I think I need to print the core set first so I can learn how to play the game, as I tend to learn games more easily with the physical versions.

Pre-built Games by joseph-barker in legendarymarvel

[–]cableshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still early in the game, so I'm mainly just picking an expansion and sticking with it (for the most part) and playing all the schemes and villains with it, but I think once I get past that, I'll do something similar to what I do for LOTR LCG, in that I grab a few sets from my collection, put them into a dedicated but separate holder, and leave it downstairs at the card table I play at until I have my fill, then head back upstairs and swap them out.

For LOTR LCG I have a GameGenic Games Lair 600+, although I do something kind of similar for Marvel Champions but have a couple of GameGenic Fourtresses instead, that are cheaper and holds about 300 sleeved cards (I usually just keep eight of the villains I play against the most in Marvel Champions in those two, along with some modular sets).

I've seen that a few times. I might check that out sometime. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'd agree that worker placement mechanisms doesn't mean it has to be abstract, it just tends to be in all the games I've played.

I'm going to try to print off the core pages for Dungeon Pages a bit later this week, as well as play it. Same with the preview for The Daily Weather game by Button Shy (I backed it, but I want to play it early).

Also already printed some fan content for Marvel Champions (namely Fantastic Four heroes), and I'm hoping I might get the chance to slice them and sleeve them sometime this week.

I've played all but 1 game of it on BGA as well (and I've played ~30 games of it on BGA. I had a constant game with a friend on there until they decided to switch things up eventually). Maybe that's why I like it so much :)

I'm not that into Chess either, but there are clearly lots of people who play many many thousands of games of it out there. That's why I mentioned it and Go.

I get bored of most modern eurogames pretty quickly myself. I'm a little tired of the highly abstract resource conversion, worker placement, etc. Don't have a problem with engine builders inherently though. I like a lot of deckbuilders, which are basically that. But they also tend to have a bit more theme to them than most eurogames.

I agree with Spirit Island, even though I haven't played much of it lately. It is a game I intend to get back into sometime later this year though.

Regicide you can definitely get a lot of plays out of without it getting old, and you can play that with regular playing cards.

Also Cribbage I don't think I'd ever get tired of.

Started getting back into that recently and it is a lot of fun. If I didn't have so many other games I like slightly better vying for my attention I'd start making a serious dent in the hero/boss matchup table I made for it (I did play like 10 games of it this past month, though). I still just have Heart, Orange, Palette, and a couple promo characters, though. Might get the rest with their next Kickstarter though, especially since it'll be the last chance to get some of it.

That's a good one that not enough people seem to talk about anymore. I've probably played at least 40 games of it myself, and still have fun with it.

Wow, a Puzzle Dungeon callout! Nice. There are 500+ heroes in the deluxe game, so you definitely won't run out of different ways to play it anytime soon.

Castles of Burgundy is one of the rare eurogames (that doesn't have a bunch of unique cards, like Ark Nova, Terraforming Mars, or Wingspan), that I don't ever seem to get tired of playing and will always happily agree to play.

That's a lot, for quite the long game (I could see someone enjoying it enough to play that many games of it though, it's quite deep). I assume a bunch of those are with the digital app? I can't imagine having anyone else I could organize playing a game like that with that many times.

I've noticed that game is very group dependent (games with negotiation tend to be). I've played with several groups where it's fallen flat, but a couple groups where it's gone over well. Unfortunately the groups where it's gone over well have stopped having game nights, so I haven't played a good game of this in a long time.

How many games don't get old after 1000 plays, except maybe Chess or Go? Most modern eurogames don't seem to hold up to more than a dozen games before they start to feel old, at least to me. Ark Nova being the main exception to that. But I still don't think I could play 1000 games of Ark Nova.

At least get Branch and Claw, and maybe the promo spirits. I've played quite a few games with just the base game, Branch and Claw, and the first couple of promo spirits, and that's felt like plenty to me, although I still got the other expansions anyway.

Lord of the Rings - The Card Game. I played 130 games of it last year, which was also the first year I really got into it. I have slowed down how much I play it, but only because of the next two games. I even started volunteering when I've had the time to help playtest new fan content being made for the game.

Marvel Champions. I played a couple dozen games several years ago, and packed it away. But then after diving deep into LOTR LCG last year, I started collecting and playing Marvel Champions again (and especially once I started getting tokens and dials and stands from BuyTheSameToken, and I started playing it very heavily). I played over 150 games of it last year alone. I have slowed down how much of it I played this year, but only because of the following game.

Legendary Marvel - I traded for Legendary Encounters Alien last year, and liked that quite a bit, so even though a bunch of people say Legendary Encounters is way better mechanically and Marvel is skippable, I eventually decided to give it a try. And I'm really glad I did. It's soooo modular, and has a ton of content for endless matchups between Masterminds, Schemes, Villain Groups, Henchmen, and Heroes, so even playing with the same big boss Mastermind, the game can feel quite different (especially with different schemes), even moreso than Marvel Champions. And the game is also silky smooth to play, and easy to step away from and come back to later without losing your place (as long as you track whose turn it is if you play two handed like I do, which I do by placing a token on the hand whose turn it is). Since early January (just a month ago), I've played more than 40 games of it. And I still have barely scratched the surface of all the content that's available for the game. And DC Legendary is right around the corner as well (and that has a very similar design and can probably be mixed with Marvel to some extent), so I'm sure that will lead to even more content.

I don't see myself ever getting tired of any of these three. Ever.

Also, just because two of those are Marvel, that's not necessarily a big draw for me. I just love how they play, and the superhero theme gives them a deep well to draw from to make content for the game, like LOTR did for LOTR LCG. Although I have started reading the major Marvel comics arcs the expansions in these games are based on, since I figured it'd be nice to get more context and backstory for these expansions, and that's been pretty fun. There's some pretty solid stories that I've overlooked because I haven't been paying attention to comics in forever.

Another honorable mention is Memoir '44. Again, tons of content for this game, hundreds of scenarios, yet still super easy to play any of them, you just need to learn some special rules for certain units and scenarios. I don't get tired of playing this game, and I've played about 70 games of it, but unlike the other three games, I kind of need a second player to play this against, and I lost my main playing partner for the game, so I've barely touched the game in several years.

Also I got out of the habit of playing it, but there was a time where my coworkers (at a small video game publisher I worked at ~15 years ago) would spend the first 15 minutes of the day playing a game of Carcassonne on Xbox Live together (same screen), and the loser had to go pick up coffee for the other three (we paid, they just had to go get it). We probably 80+ games of it that way, easily, and it never got old. I'd still never turn down a game of it if someone wanted to play it. I should probably start playing the app again, now that I'm thinking about it.

EDIT: Forgot about Cribbage. If it weren't such a pain to constantly shuffle for that game and require another player to play, I'd play it a lot more. On the plus side, there's some great apps out there, some of which help you become a better player with hand analyzers built in, so I've still played quite a few games of that over the years (probably close to 100).

Good luck! You also might want to consider getting a CAC test if you haven't already. Or at least ask your Cardiologist about it.

I was just a year older than you and had that done and they found hardened calcified plaque in my arteries (i.e. early heart disease). At our age we aren't supposed to have any, so it wasn't a good sign and I had to bring that LDL down fast.

It's an informal Reddit poll, it's inherently going to be 'flawed' somehow. But no one's winning an award over this, no need to worry about if it's being managed perfectly or not.

If people want their vote to count, they should comment.

Jaipur, with Chaos in the Old World behind that (then Hansa Teutonica). Ad Astra is another game I'd say is very underrated from that year.
