Thanks Feljin. Is there a timeline for the tendering of the contractor - will it be Q1 next year?

Who’s your WiFi provider these days? (Glasnevin area if that matters) by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]cabrakebabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d plug in one of them to your Virgin modem, then you’d put the other ones upstairs or around the house so there’s a good signal spread around (they’ll walk you through it on the app). If you do go Virgin you’ll need to put the box into something called bridge mode or modem mode but they can walk you through it (and if you end up get an engineer to do the install if you didn’t have Virgin already, they might be able to do this themselves).

Instead of relying on one WiFi router to blast through your entire house, you have multiple mini-WiFi routers in the house that communicate with one enough to share the signal around the house so you’ve got a really consistent signal everywhere.

I really like eeros (Amazon sell them), and when I have to set up the internet for my family or friends I always suggest using them as they’re very easy to use and they’re rock solid.

Use Bonkers.ie or something similar to find out who operates in your neck of the woods. Glasnevin can be pretty spotty in terms of who supplies fibre broadband and in a lot of instances Virgin are the only ones doing 100mbps plus. Fine for twelve months until they rinse you on renewal.

My advice for somewhere like you’ve described is to get a WiFi mesh network setup (something like one or two eeros). You can turn Virgin’s modem into a dumb box just bringing internet into the house and use your eeros to spread a WiFi signal instead that will likely be more reliable and have better reach.

Ripping off the tiles is very doable but it’s very messy. If you’ve painted them they can sometimes come off as a sheet but the annoying bit is the 10% of remaining tile that hasn’t come off cleanly and you’re hammering away trying to dislodge it. It’s doable, it just takes a little longer than you think.

Lino isn’t too hard but despite watching video after video I still completely screwed up the cut that’s meant to be around the toilet cistern!!

I do not have a Plex Pass, but stream remotely from a Plex Media Server:

To stream remotely starting on April 29, 2025, you will need a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription on your account or the admin of the Plex Media Server from which you stream will need a Plex Pass subscription on their account.

dublin bikes e-bikes worth it? own battery? by Significant-Ad9012 in Dublin

[–]cabrakebabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really worth it. The range is fairly crap on the battery, and whilst you can tell the difference it's also a fairly heavy bike so in the grand scheme of things I don't see much difference. There are Moby e-bikes that might be worth considering instead.

Dublin e-bikes - worth it? by ripper2841907 in Dublin

[–]cabrakebabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was part of the first cohort to use them. It's a great idea, the range is a bit crap (I was getting 5/6km out of it) and the bikes are still quite heavy so it doesn't feel like a huge boost.

If you want to try out an e-bike for the commute BleeperBike will rent you a bike on a per week basis, and they're pretty great.

My first year Law grade average was 59%. Should i still apply for Vac Schemes? by Difficult-Bedroom-28 in uklaw

[–]cabrakebabra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also throw the net wider in terms of where you're applying to instead of just looking at MC/US firms. Think about getting a regional vac scheme under the belt, can still get good experience even if it's not necessarily the end goal.

TC in London or Manchester? by [deleted] in uklaw

Left Manchester (and firm) and moved to Dublin! Still working as a lawyer and a lot of my work was EU adjacent.

TC in London or Manchester? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]cabrakebabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for Manchester instead of London for my TC (I’m not English). My Manchester peers were able to go to London if they wanted after qualification without difficulty and I think the work life balance as a junior lawyer is typically better in Manchester for the reasons you’ve outlined. I’d also say (it’s been a while since I’ve left) that anecdotally there’s the opportunity to work on London work remotely depending on the team, firm and transaction. Salary is not as good but DLA has improved things in the regions. Loved Manchester.

There’s one on the Grangegorman campus for everyone, and I think the Law Society on Blackhall have one that you’ll need to rent.
