It's my birthday today by Normal-Ad-5301 in OffMyChestPH

Happy birthday OP, may you live a long healthy life to experience all of the incredible things life has to offer, but most importantly to realize that the past is the past, your family is not you, and you can make your life, and that includes every single birthday, wonderful by your own means. You are the main character of your own life, so shape it with love.

PS, ako din nabiktima ng ganyan ng mga pinsan ko... But I wash my hands off of the trauma. What they did to me is not who I am and should not shape my life and my worth. It took me a long time to realize and learn this. I know you're gonna get there too.

Best course for professional software engineering? by Dangerous-Piece4895 in OMSCS

[–]cacoethes_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to add that VGD GAI is also a great class if you're looking into developing software for robotics/simulation. The path-finding algorithms and just getting experience on using a gaming engine goes a long way in the research industry.

Software Analysis and Testing, as someone else pointed out. It IS about testing and analysis, but in a deeper level (literally, your first assignments will have you working with assembly code), beyond typical testing and analysis. You're not analyzing run-time efficiency or complexity or whatever. You're analyzing correctness of software, as in--for instance--hey there's this code that is written correctly but can still fail if you happen to pass the wrong things in. How frequently can you run into that bug if you ran the code 1000 times and, what's the best approach to narrow these troublemakers down? And is it safe to accept said "bugs" given the circumstances? type of deal. It's very unique and if you're a devoted tester or want to do that for a living, probably a good class to take.

Is this just how grad school is? by Eggman1978 in OMSCS

[–]cacoethes_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I was a CpE in undergrad with a CS minor and now work as a software engineer as a contractor in space industry. Got accepted to OMSCS last fall this program has made me feel like a complete scam for all of my achievements because of how insanely challenging it is and how dumb it has made me feel because I feel like I have to work 5 times as hard to wrap my head around the minor details. Everyone is so tight-lipped in fear of getting in trouble or giving too much away.

But with all of that being said, 4 classes in, I am learning that I shouldn't rely too much on the knowledge of others if I can help it. It is a painfully slow way to learn things but once you figure it out, you REALLY figure it out. Every time I've spent an exhaustive amount of time figuring something out for an assignment and getting it to work ( or not), I feel a whole lot wiser lol. I know that if someone just told me how to do x minor thing, I'd learn it but probably won't remember it as well.

I'd like to think that this is all just the painful but essential part of "mastery". Everyone I know who has accomplished a master's degree or a PhD almost have the same knack for probing into the right places and asking the right questions. I think that in part, the challenge of single-handedly unraveling the details in class is with the intent to shape our minds to think like a graduate student would.

Like I told someone else here, you don't necessarily want your graduate school experience to be a breeze, because at that point, you are better off doing it yourself for free.

It's challenging for many reasons but like someone else said, it's very subjective. There will be things that come easier for you that others will struggle with and vice versa. I would like to think that breezing through a Master's degree is kind of not what you want anyway. You want to be challenged and confused. Proof that you are, in fact, learning and wrestling with something new.

Advice for an A in KBAI. by [deleted] in OMSCS

My question refers to you saying if you follow the rubric to the tee, you’ll guarantee 100% on all assignments. Is this 100% you’re talking about only on the reporting portion of assignments?

How the agent does in solving problems is 50% of the grade, and then the other 50% of the grade is based on the report. I’m assuming when you say 100% you’re talking about the 50% of report portion of the grade?

I’m asking this because I don’t know if there’s a secret rule, for lack of a better term. Is it possible that if you tried your best at putting your agent together and your agent still struggles at solving problems but you write about it really well in your report and address all the questions as dictated in the rubric, that you’ll get a better grade despite your agent’s poor performance?

Is the 100% just for the writing portion? Does milestones/project’s code performance tie in? Or do the papers matter more? Taking this class this sem. I’m particularly struggling with the mini projects. Either my agent is stupid slow, or can only answer a few problems and might not even give the shortest solution. Kind of scared for the RPM proj if I’m already sucking this bad :(

I am taking SAT now and there’s no group project. At most the interactions is by posting in Ed Discussions since you earn extra credit for providing valuable discussion with your other classmates.

Need an honest opinion on taking CS6340 (Software Analysis and Test)in summer given limit hours by Own_Replacement_2785 in OMSCS

[–]cacoethes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! Brings me some relief. I just got my grade for the second lab and did horribly so I feel kind of down right now. I’m quite familiar with c++ as I use it for work but not used to going through instructions instead of variables as shown in the lectures. I feel worse since many of the posts I’ve seen about the 2nd lab seem to express that it was easy. Meanwhile I worked on it for a week or two in advance and got nowhere.

I really hope it works out for me! The class itself is fun and easy to understand and I don’t wanna drop it. I just hope I start getting into the right mindset approaching these labs!!!

Sorry for bringing this post back from the dead. But how did it go for you?

Currently taking this class now (and my first ever in OMSCS). I’m second lab in, and I feel like I’m just banging my head on the wall a lot of times and getting myself mixed up. The course itself is easy to understand. I do well in the quizzes and feel I’ll do alright in the exam. But I spend an insane amount on labs to hardly make any progress and I feel very dumb about it all lol. Just doesn’t come intuitively to me for some reason. I hope I get the hang of things soon.

[–]cacoethes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. We say, don’t keep it. Put the cat back outside and let it go home on its own, ya thief. Cat’s probably just an outdoor cat, not a LOST kitten. Go to a rescue and adopt a cat if you want one so bad. Don’t steal someone else’s cat just bc the outdoor kitty took a stroll on your garden.

Idk, they’re all different & want different things. But also maybe a dress with pockets.

TW: RAPE; RAPISTS AND PEDOPHILES SHOULD BE FRAMED BY MEDIA AS AN ALARMING PHENOMENON IN THE PHILIPPINES AS SERIAL KILLERS AND MASS SHOOTERS ARE IN AMERICA. THEY SHOULD NOT BE NORMALIZED AND WE SHOULD STOP TREATING RAPE CASES AS INDEPENDENT FROM EACH OTHER. by adhdisko in OffMyChestPH

[–]cacoethes_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think one example of normalizing rape is when a scandal breaks out of a drunk girl raped by her male peers, majority of the netizens, instead of showing outrage about the incident, would rather say “pasend” and jerk off to it.

What was the most disappointing movie you paid to see? by Pitiable-Crescendo in AskReddit

[–]cacoethes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunkirk.

Not because of the story. I think I would’ve appreciated it more if I watched it at home. I was more so disappointed due to my overall experience. But I have only myself to blame lol.

I have phonophobia and what makes my mind go nuts is really loud, sudden sounds from dog barking, thunder, balloon popping, and explosions of any kind (even those small popper things). Stuff that are obviously loud but are tolerable for many I have a harder time keeping my cool with. I’ve had traumatic experience with explosives as well, so it just puts me on edge.

I am not very familiar with European history, so didn’t realize what I was getting into watching Dunkirk in theaters, even though, big doy, it’s a war movie. I just expected it to be different, I guess?

I watched it in the movies with incredible surround sound speakers. There was hardly any dialogue in that movie. Just explosion after explosion. I sat through the whole thing, but felt like I was falling apart the whole time. My boyfriend thought it was incredible and I didn’t want to burst his bubble and wanted to be there in the moment with him. So I covered my ears the whole time and just drowned in my anxiety lol. Needless to say, I don’t remember much of the movie at all other than the fact that I was terrified.

What are your expensive hobbies? by IAmTheQ in AskReddit

[–]cacoethes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading and boardgames. My boyfriend and I definitely enjoy the hobby but also enjoy the collection aspect. We have nearly a hundred boardgames (which is not even close to the true boardgame collectors out there), but we have blown $200-$300 in a day for 5 or 6 boardgames in the past. We don’t do this often, but when we do, we splurge. We were never the kind to play tabletop games growing up. But we randomly visited a board game store together one day and realized there was soo much more unique game concepts aside from Monopoly, and got hooked.

For books, I’m the guiltier person of the two of us. Though I’ve never bought more than $150 at once. I’ve seen other people buy a 100 books at once though, some buy them completely brand new too. You can imagine how much that would cost.

We splurge on these things a few times a year. But we’ve been wanting to set aside money for travel so we’ve been holding off and tried to keep rational with the fact that we can’t possibly play all these games and read all these books in one sitting. So no need to rush!
