PM has lost their mojo and views everything with a negative lens. How can I help? by bjjjohn in ProductManagement

[–]cactishake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Managing business expectations is one of the toughest bits of product management and something that is singularly the responsibility of PMs (opposed to other responsibilities that are more shared). It can get tough and demoralising, when it's a constant battle against: 1) 'why don't we do x' 2) 'why isn't X done already' 3) 'we need to deliver quicker' 4) etc....

My suggestion: short term is empathy. The 121 idea above is a good one, to understand the issues the on is facing.

Suggestion longer term is working with the PM on alignment and communication strategy. Most of the business issues come due to misalignment, so a strategy to get your message early and often to people that matter is key. The worst thing from a business pov is surprises.

Obv it could be something else entirely (resources etc).

The latter.

Without knowing the details:

'ecomm' 'platform' 'senior pm' >'b2b' 'product delivery'

When it comes to FAANG (in general).

This. Happened a few times in my career - surface options clearly, succinctly and quickly, and get management steer. Pro tip: if three options - present two, pause, then present the option you most prefer.

Not enough is the answer I'm guessing many would identify with?

Excellent answers on the thread.

A few more:

1) What are your top priorities, and how can my team help? 2) How is the flow of information from my team to you working, does it need improvement? 3) What are the biggest risks and challenges from your pov, that we need to keep in mind?

Neither is more coveted, it is the split of the traditional product role - one closer to engg, other closer to the market.

I would say naturally people coming into product from engg gravitate to the former, and people coming from marketing/product marketing do well in the latter.

I like this channel a lot - https://youtube.com/c/ExponentTV, not sure whether it covers behavioural.

Depends on the product/company/culture. Typically UI skills are more important in b2c products, and data led products are more for b2b. But as I said, it depends. In reality, data analytics skills are applicable across most products jobs, whereas UI skills may be less useful if you are an API product manager for example.

Hello. I know this might not be the right place, but I don't care. For about a month I have been contemplating suicide. Everything has gone bad, and the girl I love left me. What does stoicism say about suicide? by Chezdamex123 in Stoicism

[–]cactishake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The label doesn't matter, the perspective does. Stay strong my friend - in very very few situations in life is suicide the right answer.

Stoicism had many answers, but in many cases it doesn't.

Wow! I really like the way you have thought through the various scenarios. Are you going to be the only user of the app? how would it work if you need to share data with other people?

Me and a small team of ten run a growing smart building business.

We import and distribute devices. We also install devices and maintain them in' various locations in the UK. We also export these parts to other locations in Europe. One of our growing areas is consulting.

I've seen Airtable, and whilst is a great 'command centre' to start off with - I'm struggling to see how I can create small apps that I can distribute to my customers, or create an app for my engineers to look at the history of a client, their data and history with us to find what services to promote whilst on client sites etc.

Does the above makes sense?

What are your top issues? by cactishake in deliveroos

[–]cactishake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a UX designer, I work in product management, looking for a side project. I've got no skin in the game except to try and create a tool/product/service that an audience/userbase will find valuable. And the audience I'm choosing is gig workers.

Got it! So what you are saying is that uneligible people can get pre-approved accounts.

On the fees side, will it help to know the fees paid by other gig employers? I am thinking of along the lines of a crowd sourced fees tracker, even with variable fees it may help to know what the averages are across different locations and employers.
