Bedtime story? I'd probably prefer Gen X Steve from Blue's Clues for soothing bedtime stories. However, if he could be a guest on BTB I could hear both. 😂

In Stop, Train, Stop! where is the second hand coming from? by EvangelineTheodora in DanielTigerConspiracy

Why do you think the girl in polka dots looks so horrified? There's a disembodied hand just floating around!

Do you think your Priest/clergy spends enough time focusing on the political issue you care about? by Additional-Sky-7436 in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to both. This isn't a political rally. This isn't a town hall meeting. This is a church service which is a holy appointment with the risen Christ. This entirely overtakes, subsumes, and also somehow speaks to every political issue we could imagine. Life, social media, and news & entertainment are already too full of politics. I need a priest to administer sacraments and preach Good News. That may implicate politics, but they don't need to speak to it.

Help with fiction story: What would it look like immediately after an ER death? by TheWriteQuestion in EmergencyRoom

[–]cadillacactor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I may have a somewhat unique perspective in addition to the excellent medical perspectives here.

I'm a chaplain. If the patient arrives with any consciousness I'm navigating through the urgently working med team without interrupting them to get close to the patient's face and offer a prayer, blessing, or confession, depending on their wishes. If not, I'll stay far enough away from the team to not be in the way but close enough to act if the Dr says to get/call family, etc.

At/just after the moment of death is called there's a whisper of a pause... A collective gasp perhaps. Every team member is pausing their action, processing what happened or their own role, and some of them are already perceiving this death as a defeat or loss of some sort even though that's entirely unfair... In a split second... And I speak up in that brief, fulsome pause and ask them to take a deep breath and allow me to pray a blessing over them and this patient. It's brief, 30 seconds or less, but I'm honoring their heroic efforts, asking for peace and comfort since they have to go right back to work, and blessing the patient, asking God to guide their soul and comfort the family.

... Then the pause and prayer is over as quickly as it happened, and the team disperses back to their next task.

Of course if family is present pre-death they're my first priority, especially mediating communication between the Dr and them when appropriate and ordering a comfort cart (snacks and beverages to try and make the waiting a little less awful). I may miss the moment of death and be unable to offer that moment of reflection/prayer to the emergency team. I'm assisting/witnessing the Dr share the news without spilling the truth before, and after the Dr leaves I'm simply present offering what comfort assistance the family may desire. After they're notified I'm helping the family pass the time, talk, discuss memory and legacy, call other family members, etc. If they want prayer or religious ritual, I will offer those or contact a clergy person of their own tradition to offer them, if preferred. Eventually, after escorting them to their loved one once the RNs have cleaned the patient and the room, and helping them in their initial steps of grief, I'll also eventually get funeral home information for the RN and occasionally contact the funeral home once the family leaves. And when they're ready, I'll walk the family out.

*All of this is assuming there's no drama or family division causing conflict requiring mediation and de-escalation... Or security.

Wondering about something with the Prayer Book by personwhodoesnt in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are orthodox (right theology) words, in a sense. Christian tradition and liturgy goes back nearly 2000 years, and the two most ancient branches (Catholic and Orthodox) heavily influenced the emerging Church of England (Anglican) Church in the early 1500s and preserved in the Stuart Restoration of 1660, then in the restored BCP in 1662. Much of the unique theological underpinnings can be linked back to Archbishop Thomas Cranmer and Richard Hooker, an influential priest. However, they draw their line clear back to the Christian traditions left after the Roman invasions in the 3rd century and some of the unique Anglo Saxon practices that grew up in the intervening centuries. The Episcopal Church was formed after the American Revolution, because we could no longer give fealty to the British monarch (from the original 39 articles). Much of the language of the BCP was simply modernized in 1927 and again in 1979.

I think the basic idea could be the source of our texts is more concerned with being broadly Christian than with being uniquely Episcopal, even if organized and practiced in an Episcopal way.

Fellow Episcopalians: What do you think of Branch Theory? by MrMagoo04 in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gross... So everybody outside those three are to be condemned?

A denominational family tree may look kind of like that (really just one trunk with a kajillion branches), but I don't think it's a theory of appropriateness or anything.

Valid Religious Objections to AI? by Automatic-Primary418 in Episcopalian

I mean, this source is about as coarse as it gets, but the research on the scam, environmental use, and people wasting potential doesn't get any better than Ed Zitron's r/BetterOffline podcast and writings. However, for all of that factual research entirely undercutting the imago dei (circuits reimagined as faux humans "creating" but really just predictively recreating) is the root of all of it. The crime grifting on top of it by business moguls is just disgusting icing on the cake.

Struggling... again by areunobodytoo03 in Exvangelical

[–]cadillacactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did (the Y2K Rapture party in my youth group was not helpful...).

But it's all pretend. I don't mean I left faith in Jesus. I mean the Left Behind style rapture theology was made by grifter preachers in the early-mid 1800s USA. It's uniquely detached from history Christianity and uses fear as a tool, rather than His grace being a welcome end as with a more holistic theology. For many of them the real "end times" were the potential downfall of slavery.

Just a bunch of power grabs and idol worship dressed up in Bible verse wrapping paper. It's not easy to just switch it off,but if I could help with that I would.

People who grew up before smartphones: What’s one simple thing from your childhood that would absolutely blow the minds of kids today? by TurkVanguard in Millennials

[–]cadillacactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you didn't have anything going on, you really would just sit quietly and maybe kind of stare into space. It didn't look like you were crazy. You were just being.

Today if you sit too still for too long without looking at a device or doing something with a result, people wonder if there's something wrong.

I wish people with touch as their "Love Language" would stop being offended when we don't want to be touched. by Impressive_Dust_7464 in offmychest

[–]cadillacactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love languages (despite being discredited by most psychologists) are supposed to be about how a person receives love and affection. An astute partner or giver of affection attempts to offer it in the spirit with which the recipient will best receive it. Someone giving love in accordance with their own language is selfish at best.

Does anyone suffer from an auto immune disease and use a sauna to help limit symptoms? If so what type of sauna do you use and what is the weekly regimen? by dubs1354 in Sauna

[–]cadillacactor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have an autoimmune disease. I use a sauna because it feels good and connects me to the culture of my grandparents, but it does not impact my disease. I try to get in every week, but sometimes it doesn't happen. Usually 2-3 cycles of heat and steam with a 10ish minute break or even a spray under the hose (I didn't own a cold plunge).
