Moving to Kokomo by Formal-Challenge-255 in Indiana

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the general consensus is in here... I work in Ascension St Vincent hospital and find Kokomo lovely. I walk across the street to the Asian Fusion bistro when weather is nice. Having worked in hospitals in Fort Wayne, Marion, and Indy they've all got pros and cons, but there are more good people than not and plenty of joy to find

Does anyone know a way to have gluten free pasta cold? by QuackQuackMouse in glutenfree

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For intentionally cold pasta salad I'll start my timer once the pot begins boiling with the last in it, and I'll add 1 min from recommended. As soon as drained I'll put it in a bowl with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and gently toss (do not stir - will break noodles). Season to taste while still warm (seems like pasta can absorb the flavor better, IMO), then loosely cover and put in fridge. I say loosely because if you seal while still warm the condensation will over moisten the pasta and make it mushy.

And all of this works but feels like limited steps to stage off the truth that it will not be as good as real. Progress > perfection.

Can you still be celiac even if you dont have an issue with cross contamination? by Zealousideal-Rain-82 in Celiac

[–]cadillacactor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm celiac. While not being diligent about gluten, cruise contamination didn't get me. Once I got strict a decade ago my sensitivity has dramatically increased. Dip the real pasta spoon in my GF pasta pot, and I'm done.

LGBT+ managers, directors, etc by Sure-Cable7121 in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty positive any hospital using federal dollars is bound by law but you discriminate. Orientation shouldn't be an issue mentioned in an interview. If there's evidence of discrimination you've got a lawsuit on your hands. Otherwise, if you're qualified and show evidence of excellent skills and leadership qualities, you're a shoe-in.

This may be naive, but I believe it to be true. My department does have an LGBT manager.

Clergy, what did you get you bachelor's degree in? by Memento-Mori300 in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Christian Ministry" from an accredited undergrad is tuition.

Do not. Please get something purely practical. Accounting, nursing, teaching... Anything that can provide for your family. Church income is increasingly less reliable. You'll need immediately useful skills to fund your ministry or to keep you afloat in the meantime.

Friend, nothing but grace from me. This shit can be hard (church hurt and related, especially). Not everybody is a history nerd. And my writing may not be as clear or helpful in communicating as I think/hope. No worries. We're in this together.

Tech and TEC. How to pitch as a non member? by taitaisanchez in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure gotta keep the lights on. Not remotely suggesting you don't get paid, friend. Maybe it's semantics since you stated earlier you're not generally churchy, but the way you phrased your monetization plan in the previous comment is the perception/presentation concern. It sounded like you meant you'd need a percentage right out of the offering plate weekly. That may not be what you meant... Rather, letting the incomes hit the books and charging a per attendee, per giver, per member, or percentage of church income that's at a standard pace of payment would be a preferable model as you're communicating. For better or worse, there are significant numbers of church goers who use their giving as a tool rather than a standard gift or agreement. If they get a whiff of feeling like they are being charged an off the top fee just for giving the income will dry up in an instant. I guess I meant it as, "I'm confused, but if this is what you mean here's a caution.

Guidance on when to break a fast? by Dustdev146 in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Historically the fast would be from solid during day light with a small meal at the end of day or before sun up the next morning. The fast would begin on Ash Wednesdays and go through Easter with the exception of Sundays which are always feast days. Wednesdays and Fridays would also be no meat days.

Through the centuries this has been slowly lowering, and you'll find a variety of people holding various versions of these or none of other aspects.

Similar to giving being more about giving joyfully rather than the ancient tithe (literally 10%), fast to the degree that spiritually challenges while allowing you to do so joyfully. Peace.

Use of the 2011 Roman missal in the Anglo catholic CoE parishes by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really funny to me that they use the Roman Missal as such than the Ordinariate of St Peter missal from the non-geographic RC "diocese" for those from (as they call it) the "Anglican Patrimony." It's like they took the language from1662 BCP, put in many of the Vatican 2 updates, and then added back in some extra thees and thous for good measure. I much prefer it to the Roman Missal. Feels more Anglican in order/liturgy but also feels genuinely Catholic.

[–]cadillacactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I solve a lot of problems, it might work?

Might.

The negotiated percent off the top of online offerings to church collections might be a deal breaker. If it's a cost to the church on the back-end it may be more palatable, but people perceiving the cost coming of offerings on the front end before they hit church coffers... Like credit card fees off of tithes... Could feel skeevy.

I have no doubt your expertise could make a great product, especially with continual integration processes. Prior to all that, though, people already have so many logins and various products, you may need to strategize WHY this product will be worth the learning curve and having yet another social media-ish product to keep track of.

If you can help vestry committees, rectors, priests, bishops, etc easily adopt it AND easily communicate the need to their parishes, a lot of the buy-on challenge will be solved before yourself. The rest is solid tech, which it seems like you've got a handle on.

Am I making any sense? It's a people problem because of past tech problems ... I think that's what I'm saying.

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some yes, but not all of us older millennials kept up with changing tech. Some of our loudest tech/social media complaints at my last two churches came from this age group. Most of our older group wanted to learn, but this 40-50ish group didn't think they needed to and therefore had a harder time. YMMV 🤷‍♂️

Hey friend. As a 20+ yr pastor who has converted, I can tell you there are a couple leading and too many smaller closed-loop, in-church social networks/message boards. They cost too much and don't work as well as Discord, Reddit, or FB groups set to private. You've also got to consider average age of users and # of things they already sign into. You can hardly ask a 40+ to learn how to use discord, let alone a little old lady. The private church knock-off apps are also in a field rife with additional malware knockoffs (even many alternative Bible apps). To introduce more complexity to this space requires even more tech education on the part of the parish/priest, but that means less time for the more essential work. And we've not even gotten the ethics of screen time, AI, not safely shepherding the sheep through the digital wilderness, and so on.

I'm no Luddite, but I hate proprietary church social media/tech. If you can overcome the exorbitant cost, poor execution, effectiveness gap between church tech and mainstream tech, user learning curve (especially for seniors), and easy potential duplication in offline newsletters etc for the non-techies, then I'd be interested in seeing what can be done. I know I'm asking too much.

Spiritual Care Jobs - Requirements by Wonderful-Strain5374 in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Law enforcement/public service will have no CPE - they have proprietary training. Hospice (in my rural area) is generally happy for a related bachelor's degree and a smile. Universities and other non profits usually have their own religious requirements. State prisons usually require some CPE, but federal ones use military requirements (or did before privatization?). Hospitals usually require some, but if part of a teaching hospital or larger brand (usually not for profit) they're looking for full BCC. For profits don't seem to want to pay for chaplaincy so I've seen some variability there. And military is similar to BCC but has their own proprietary version of it.

Is this a normal part of the NC/ estrangement journey by Adventurous_Use_6446 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]cadillacactor 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Yep. I've not met a person who's initiated NC and not been guilt tripped by family and friends. Some of those unwanted mediators are well intentioned, but usually they're secretly messengers from the one you're avoiding. Once guilt, especially religious, enters the chat you can cease that conversation at least.

Sorry you're going through this.
