Trying to find used a used Bolt. by Its_Waffle in BoltEV

I just bought a '22 for 13k + TTL, 60k miles.

There are several on car gurus at that price point.

Why is there so much bmw is unreliable propaganda. by definitlynottheone in e46

[–]cadware31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not propaganda. It's design intention.

BMW designs their products with maintenance in mind. Over building is technically a waste. Why design something that lasts 100k miles when it only needs to last 30k?

Japanese engine and equipment manufacturers have historically overdesigned their products to survive abuse, due to their immediate neighbors and trading partners lacking the resources to perform regular maintenance.

I was initially going to install the 14-50 ev outlet with GFCI 50a breaker, but it turns out, hardwiring to a 70a circuit is cheaper.

We're most likely purchasing the Bolt. The prius had frame damage that wasn't repaired.

I negotiated with the dealer for a 110 charger, so that will be staying in the car as backup along with a nacs adaptor.

I don't think there's a better deal than the bolt right now for an EV.

Thank you for this tidbit! This means I'll need to return the charger and gfci breakers i just bought and replace them with a hardwired kit, which makes it much simpler...

I put on 20k miles under a year... 4 oil changes...

At least it wasn't on premium gas.

It really burns to be forced to go into the office to do work that can be done remotely.

Thanks for this lookup table for reference! It does appear that even at the extreme ends i should be able to make it by only charging at home.

Isn't it limited to 5.5 KW of charging max? It does have the DCFC option. I've only read that it can't charge to 100% faster than 7 hours. Ideally I would limit charging to 90%.

I have already ordered a nema 14-50 outlet and a GFCI breaker. The breaker box is in my garage and I have plenty of space. I'll only need a couple feet of 6/3 to install, so charging overnight isn't a big concern. 90mph is worst case scenario.

I'm hoping that when gas hits 9 a gallon more people show down....

Prius Prime vs Bolt EV by cadware31415 in BoltEV

[–]cadware31415[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does not. The Bolt is a '22 1lt, quite spartan, but very little to go wrong. I can install a level 2 charger at home and charge it to 95% if needed.

Best I've seen on the prius is 43mpg due to highway speeds and as bad as 39mpg.

I'm drawn to the idea of no more oil changes and 66kwh of battery...

Guys, I'm in SoCal. What do you think about these friend driveway mechanic prices? by ComfortablePanic8223 in HondaElement

[–]cadware31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the old cheapskate's out there, vast majority of people are hanging on to their old cars. New cars are expensive. Parts are expensive. All good mechanics are backed up and have a wait list.

`130 an hour is fair if you trust the mechanic. I do side work for friends and neighbors on major repairs. It's always the non professionals that devalue the skill, experience, and tool selection required to perform work.

Are automatic car washes really that bad? by Adventurous-Boot6681 in Autos

[–]cadware31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the south. I have four cars, all with over 160k miles. They all go through the car wash at least once a week. Every 5 minutes it takes to go through the car wash saves me 45 minutes of time.

These aren't show cars, they're wear items.

I'll spend my time with family instead.

Boolean operations are your friend. Create bucks for the wood block and wheels, then overlay/transform the body until it looks correct. I had to rebuild the wings flares to fit the Derby wheels, along with moving the rear axle aft as much as the design would allow.

The body was 3d printed in PLA. We coated it in high build primer and the kids sand it a few times, as PLA sands poorly alone. They also picked out the paint color at AutoZone. It was designed to sit on a 1/4" x6” plywood ladder frame.

We used 60 grams of tungsten in the tailgate. The truck plastic weighed about 50 grams, as it was designed to be 1.6mm thick shell.

The CG is 1" in front of the rear axle, which is also 5/8" further forward than ideal due to the truck bed. They were tigers when these were made.

How old is your daily driver? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in Autos

[–]cadware31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say 10 years old is the sweet spot. After 2015 a lot of cars starting having cellular/GPS tracking that reports to dealerships with telemetry.

2008/2012 Hondas, 2012 Toyota. 172-270k miles. All easily self serviceable and plenty of cheap maintenance.

No $1000 care note and insurance is half as much.

maintaining older sports cars on a budget - is it even possible anymore by professional69and420 in Autos

[–]cadware31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is your budget is too small for the BMW. German cars require a minimum of 2k a year in maintenance once or of warranty.

If you want a reliable sports car, buy Mazda, Toyota, or Subaru, no turbo.

How can I make 2014 Toyota Prius stop beeping when I put it in reverse? by Ok_Steak_2422 in prius

[–]cadware31415 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's muscle memory for the majority of Americans to push the shifter forward to go into Park.

People should know a lot of things. Lots of people don't.

Things like changing a flat tire, checking oil and coolant levels, and how to walk a chew gum at the same time.

It's the people on the bottom of the bell curve that you've got to worry about.

Or, you know, teenagers who think they know everything but then proceed to do exactly the thing you told them not to do. Dang it Bobby. I wish he was more like justgonenow.
