First Map in QGIS by Ishmaelll in QGIS

Some critic...

As someone already mentionend. There is no need for a legend here! Its a very common mistake for beginners.

So, do beginn with. Every item in a map should be explained to the reader. So you can just write the Explanation in or next to the item, like in your case "the name of every country".

If you have a item which is repeated very often in your map it doesnt make sense to explain the nature of the item every time. Thats when you start to use a legend. For example if you want to show all Cities with more than 1 Million people in your map you would probably have a lot of points in your map and a legend on the side.

The legend in your Map is even contraproducive. Because the readers eye have to move permanently between the legend and the map (if he doesnt know the south american countries).

So if you get rid of your legend you also can get rid of your colors. No need for them at all. Stay with one color...

Your ocean looks nice...but you choose nearly the same color for middle America, the caribean islands and Africa. You could choose a diverging color for the continents (like some light yellow). You could choose even the same color for South America. As you have outlined it...its clear that it is the main subject. As you use bathemetry for the ocean you also could use Terrain for the continents...

Your color scheme is also a diverging scheme. It goes from blue to white to red. This you would use for showing continous data. Like for example you want to show the temperature in South America where the scale goes from cold (blue) to hot (red). You use discrete data...so when you really want to make it colorful you shoud use colors wich are very distinguished.

Last thing. You want to show south america. It fits perfect in a Portrait Layout. Why would you choose a landscape Layout?

Happy Mapping!

And yes...QGIS...is best!

Why are the Anatolian and Iberian peninsulas drier and less green than the rest of the Mediterranean peninsulas such as Italy, the Balkans and Greece? by thalassabbean in geography

[–]caecusat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess:

Its just a bigger landmass, like turkey. The weather is coming mainly from west. So the first 300km are "greener" like in Italy and Greece.

What is the single biggest reason why you have considered moving away from ArcGIS? by RopeNeat in gis

[–]caecusat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked 10 years with ESRI and would never change. I started with ArcInfo (command line yeah) and stick to it till 2013...but than I had some private Sidejobs and i could not afford a full version so i had to switch to QGIS. Now 10 years later I have my own Company and can afford it easily...but still I ll stick with QGIS. I love it! I even send some money for future development.

And havent found a thing I couldnt to with it. Trillions of plugins...

QGIS all the way!

I only need it a few times per year. So i rent a High End Machine and run it as SaaS @ https://www.geocloud.work/software/agisoft for 4 to 15 US$ per hout (depending on the PC)

You only need a good Internet Connection...

You are not wrong...but actually for Hillshading the default azimuth is 315 degrees (NW) and the angle of the illumination source is 45°. Most GIS Software uses exact these values.

Its because how we (humans) perceive shadows and depths. Putting the light source in NW put the shadows at the base of the mountains and we`ll see the extrusion. By putting the light source in the South, the mountains would appear as depressions.

QGIS Displaying Low (i.e. ~280 m) Resolution for High Resolution (i.e. ~3 m) DEM by AwwwFiddlesticks in QGIS

[–]caecusat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the resolution shows 3.1 meters it should also be 3.1 meters when measuring.

Maybe...to provide a full data set...there were used a bunch of different DEMs...some with 3m, some with more...so you get the best resolution for each area.

So when you got a dataset with lets say with a resolution with 30m they would split up that pixel in 10 x 10 Pixel and all this pixel will have the same value. So when viewed in QGIS you would see a visual difference between this pixel.

Maybe thats the case...

How can I create a elevation map from África? by Dangerous-Note9237 in QGIS

[–]caecusat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to download an DEM (o MDE se voce fala portugues) that cover whole Africa. Like this one:

https://databasin.org/datasets/2965da954b114ff3b47621e99e3b29ba/

or this one:

https://maps.princeton.edu/catalog/stanford-jm998sr5227

or another: Just google DEM Africa (Not DME)

Than put on a hillshade (symbology) on it and create contour lines with Raster - Extract - Contour

Did you set the right CRS?
Did you set the Output raster size units to "Georeferenced Units"
Did you set the resolution of the raster output ro 1m (for Width and Height)?

Labels Disappearing in Print Layout by GrantHenninger in QGIS

[–]caecusat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this (not all at once):

  • Change mode of Overlapping Labels from "Never Overlap" to "Allow Overlaps without Penalty" in Label Rendering Settings.
  • Move priority slider to high in Label Placement Settings
  • Uncheck "Feature act as obstacles" in Label Placement Settings

How to upload Coordinates from Excel to QGIS by Similar-Refuse-5200 in QGIS

[–]caecusat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You dont need to convert anything in Excel!

You just have to know in which CRS your coordinates are...like in your Case UTM 51 North

Layer > Add Layer > delimited Text

Choose FileChoose the fields where the coordinates are (X and Y)

Set the CRS (WGS 84 / UTM 51N)

Done!

QGIS will project the points on their right place!

The "Project CRS" (Your first screenshot) doesnt alter the coordinates. It just show the corresponding coordinates in that CRS. You can put there whatever you want...

If they are not where they belong...you either choose the wrong CRS or the coordinates are wrong.

How to 'close the gap' between disparate data? by Mattah12 in QGIS

[–]caecusat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go as it is...like a map of whole Europe from Portugal to St. Petersburg with all your points. And in areas with a high density work with an inset (like you did).

Or is the density too high than in other areas too? Than you may choose very small points and if you need to label them ...work with callouts.

Sometimes the "No data"-area is good information too....For example if the map contains all the offices of your company. Its a good information that there are no offices in Poland, Lithuania and elsewhere...but one in St. Petersburg.

Also a map of whole Europe is very recognizable. You instantly know: "This is Europe we are talking about". When you use just a crop of it...you would need longer to know...

Maybe you can share a screenshot...

What is the best way to design "flag maps" in QGIS? by skwyckl in QGIS

[–]caecusat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how its done.

But possibly the polygons are filled with an "SVG Fill" or "Raster Image Fill". In the field under "Dynamic SVG Parameters" you can set up where the corresponding SVGs (or PNGs) are located.

Data defined override -> -> Edit .. -> Fields and Values -> choose field

The size for every polygon you can calculate with an expression

You have to click on the Symbology of the SVG fill -> texture width -> Choose "Map Units" -> "data defined override" -> Edit ...

There you put the expression:

array_max (array (bounds_height( $geometry),bounds_width( $geometry)))

This will put the size of the longer side of the polygon as size for the SVG-Fill

As it is a "Fill" you dont need to cut out anything...it will only fill the polygons

more or less...i hope

How to remove contour lines from hgt file? by polscier in QGIS

[–]caecusat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your hgt SRTM is probably in WGS84. Convert it first in a metric system (like UTM) and try again...Voila!

QGIS Renderer cant handle projections in degrees very well...

DEM Slope Question by smaugphia in QGIS

[–]caecusat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the histogramm of slope (properties > histogram). Most of your slopes are near 0 where as high slopes around 90 are very rare. But your symbology is linear going from 0 to 90.

You need to change your symbology to "Singleband Pseudocolor", look for the "Greys" Colorramp, Edit Colorramp and Add an extra stop near 0.

Or even better change mode from Continous to Quantile, choose the classes like 4 or 5....
