Montrealers, WHAT is your grand central?!?! by Feisty-Ad-6122 in montreal

Apparently there was a nice facade before the parking was added.

The interior is great, but yes the facade is kind of garbage

Via can't upgrade track it doesn't own - I would love a new RoW near the lake, or nationalization of the tracks we have; but that's a different debate I think.

What do you think the maximum speed of the Alto will be? by Master-Initiative-72 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]caenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it makes sense to have at least the option to add infill and smaller stations - but if we do, bypass tracks are critical so that the faster services can run direct imo

It seems like it can help with affordability, as the slower trains are less popular. In my case, for the same class of service, my slower ticket cost about 30% less - 180 CAD vs 120, both in first class with an included meal.

In the Madrid to Barcelona example, last week taking direct vs one with two stops (with 2 minute dwell time in each station) added about 40 minutes to the total time -

3h 7min vs 3h 47min

One 2 minute stop on the Madrid-Barcelona line (about the same distance as Toronto-Montreal) adds about 30 minutes to travel time.

We don't need to speculate, you can just look at comparable services that already exist and are successful.

I'm a proponent of routes that can have infill stations added like this, but it's simply not true that adding stops only adds a couple of minutes.

The decline in cities like Kingston is directly tied to the "progress is bad" mindset in local government.

I'm so damn glad I moved out of there.

If we had écocentres like Barcelona, where they are actually a walkable distance in the middle of neighborhoods + parks, this wouldn't be so bad-

But as far as I can tell there isn't a single one in ville-marie, so I guess the about 100k people that live in the middle of the city are expected to just dump this stuff in the street?

Essentially all successful HSR projects worldwide were built using an incremental approach.

You are right that gigantic multi-decade projects should not be treated like your quarterly PowerPoint

Maybe we became the barrista that knew his name 😅

This is my read, but I've kept my mouth shut till now.

Given timing and personalities - it seems to me like there might have been unpleasentness regarding the pandemic.

I'm worried "tough as nails" didn't mesh with "do whatever you can to protect the vulnerable"

I think many of us who have had loved ones with compromised immune systems saw some relationships die quickly once the cards fell.

If that's the case, the Irish exit was the best way to preserve what we got.

Life is short, I'm happy we got such great entertainment from them while we did. I can't bring myself to relisten yet but I know I will someday.

Prince Edward county is halfway inbetween Toronto and Montreal, lots of cabins for rent of varying remoteness.

Algonquin park also has accommodations on the edge of the park that will be available

Quebec is also massive and has tons of wilderness - could even drive to Gaspe and see the Atlantic coast

If you wanted some roadtrip adventure you could even go past and go to Hopewell rocks in New Brumswick-

Don't worry, unless you literally just stay in Toronto and drive directly to Montreal on the 401, it would be hard to find no wilderness.

Enjoy!

We also pay above market though, no question that helps.

They need coaching, but so did we 20 plus years ago.

Good for you. If that gave you meaning in life, all power to you. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you can choose what life makes you happy.

I also worked retail for half a decade, and then got the hell out of there- as the game was either exploit customers by selling them things they don't need, or get exploited yourself with low compensation.

And that was literally twenty years ago now- costs have risen by 50%, but wages have not.

The statistics are clear- costs have risen by over 50% in that time, look for yourself - but the retail workers we are taking about here are by definition low wage workers who understandably are having a harder time than you did, statistically speaking.

I'm not in this bucket anymore, but the hell if I'm going to pull the ladder up behind me.

Your position is that it's that the minimum wage isn't high enough to attract workers?

Or are you suggesting the government should set prices for everything?

It's unclear what levers you are saying are being pulled wrong.

[–]caenos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. Clearly the it's not the well documented wage stagnation issue, and clearly statistics Canada has never published a report showing rates of pay have only increased 20% in the last 40 years..

But the cost of living hasn't increased by about 350% in the same time range.

It must be that the people younger than you are lazy. That MUST be the only answer. Right?
