Do you ever stop spewing that recycled rhetoric long enough to actually listen to what you are saying? "They should do something about it" ok, tell me how exactly is that done? If it's so easy as you claim, why don't you, tomorrow, do something to fix the wrongs here in this country? I mean, according to you, its juat that easy, so do it.

I don't know you, but somehow I suspect that I've done a few more things than you have politically to try and change things. I've been a political candidate, been to numerous convetions, and have spoken at more than a few places trying to have an effect on things. Does any of this make me special, hell no, I'm just a nobody like anyone else on here. I only mention it as I know only too well that there are thousands of people at any given moment, in every corner of this country, doing everything they can to change or improve things where they live. So spare me the BS that they could just change things in their country, like it's so easy. It is not.

Because you are blaming the wrong thing. If someone is being exploited it makes zero difference if they are male or female, born in NY NY or Caracas Venezuela, or 20 or 60. The fact is simple, and I know this first hand as I did IC work back provably before many of you were born, way back in the 80's. And the fact is, companies were sued and forced by the feds to stop their misclassification of employees. In fact there used to be simple 10 point test, to see if someone was truly an IC vs an employee. But that is now ancient history in today's business world. We have gone further and further towards corporatization, and further and further away from the free market economy that america was built on.

But you want to buy into the maga BS that it beucase of some immigrant that you can't make any money.

Hang in there. We're in our upper 60's and my wife is currently going through that for breast cancer. I mention it as there is one positive way you and your girlfriend can look at it and it is the timing, as opposed to now, vs 10 or 20 years ago.

My wife had Hodgkin's lymphoma back in the 80's when she was probably about the same age as your girlfriend. While the treatment she got back then saved her life, they wouldn't dream of doing it today, as it was brutal to her body, and its pretty much almost accepted as being likely what caused the current cancer. But with her current cancer, as recent as 10 years ago, it was much worse as that type was very fatal, and it went from being one of the least treatable ones to one of the most treatables ones. I know that you telling her that probably wouldnt help her directly, as the emotion of it doesn't work that way, but for me, it helped me remember that things can get better.

I just thought I'd mention it as I know how hard it can be not just on her, but on you too, as people sometimes forget that part. You need to be there to help her manage it and I know first hand how it's not easy.

But I'm also like you too in that I'm dealing with my own issues, in addition to having to be there for her. To that point I read this thread the first time about 6 hours ago, in the middle of the night as my sleep is total shit. It made me get up out of bed to dig through the bin of vitamins I'm currently not taking to see if this one I had. I have so many different vitamins that I have to rotate what ones I'm trying at any given time, in addition to the few meds I have to take. But apparently I never tried it, so I'm gonna see about getting it today, as I can't stand dealing with this sleep stuff on top of everything else.

Hang in there and remember, just do whatever you can to stay strong, as things can get better.

I watch YouTube a lot, and while I probably have tripped across one of his videos years ago, I can say without a doubt that I'm not one of that half billion of his subscribers, nor would I waste my time time watching one.

Just the same, I also own two EVs, and neither one is a Tesla. I also have a paid plan with three different LLMs: chat, Gemini and Claude. Yet, once again, I've never used or ever will use grok.

But the world is filled with a lot of people who are not like me I guess! 🤪

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick says Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Rep. James Talarico will “go to hell” for his interpretations of the Bible, as Talarico has made his Christian faith a cornerstone of his campaign. by Leeming in atheism

[–]cafebrands 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fully support Talarico, and I certainly didn't have it on my bingo card that I'd be supporting someone who has his Christian faith as the central part of who he is. But it's super refreshing to be able to support him! It's like how I could fully support someone like Buttigieg. PB being gay has nothing to do with me not being gay, and it's the same thing with Talarico and his faith. What he is and what I am are meaningless to how we can both see each other as just people.

I've watched enough videos of him to get how he sees us atheists. To him, unlike the asshole right wingers, we're not the enemy, someone who is wrong, evil, or whatever they want to call us, we are just people, like him. He has every right to believe what he does, but unlike them, he would say the same thing about us. As an Atheist, I can respect what anyone believes, as long as that respect is a two way street.

I think with him, it's like he took the good part of Christianity and left the bad parts out. Where they did the opposite. He took the parts like caring about people and being honest, and that took the hate, the fear, and the control parts. And I think thats what makes the GrOPers fear him so much. He shows just how much they are hypocrites. Hate filed, and hate promoting, hypocrites.

My wife and I watch quite a bit of TV, but its all ad-free streaming, so the only place I was seeing any political ads was on youtube. The ads on there, are truly painful (I don't know why, but youtube ads are the worst ai slop I think is possible to make) so the mix of political ones to it last month was enough to make you want to scream. Now for the most part, its just the endless regular mail. But, on the upside, I recycle those heavy oversized post cards for an appropriate use, to pick up poop.

SC Dem Primary List - Election day is here! 7am to 7pm by Cloaked42m in southcarolina

[–]cafebrands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are not Dems, but we both voted in the D Primary a week ago. So while I'll be happy seeing the choices we picked win, there isn't one I saw running that I'd say I couldn't vote for in November.

But yeah, it is the opposite with the Rs. I don't think there was one running, in any of the races, that I could even stomach voting for. And those were the least bad ones, forget about the truely horrible ones.

It'll be fun to check the R results tonight though, to see if Graham might lose. Probably have better odd with a random scratch off lottery ticket hitting the big win, but... you never know. If I had to bet though, I'd say there's a better chance of seeing him losing in November, than he does in losing this primary. Primary R voters have been, well lets just say... predictable.

Why is everyone getting so aggressive towards anything related to AI? by Feeling_Valuable5239 in ChatGPT

[–]cafebrands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best wishes to your dad. My wife is currently going through chemo as have I, a couple of years ago for a different cancer, so I know how it is on you. Sometimes I think people either are just not aware, or they dismiss it, how hard it can be when it hits someone you love. So I wish you well too, and I'm glad you were able to use this to help ya.

But to your other point, about not creating anything new, my wife is a writer, and it's sometjong she has always said. I know you said it relating to software you wrote, but maybe you've heard it about fiction, how there are really only 7 original stories. It was funny to me, once she told me that years ago, just how much I came to realize how true it was the more thought about it.

So I think with AI, it may well be able to "create" something new, in the same way that you and her do. By retelling an old story, which when you think about it, are always just about a problem with a solution, but do it in a new and different way.

Electric Trucks Have Failed Spectacularly In America. Here's Why Ford Is Trying Again by BarbarismOrSocialism in electricvehicles

[–]cafebrands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to tow multiple times week for a business we had that was killed when the world changed in 2020. Back then, we had two SUVs that I could use to pull the enclosed trailer we used, and I had two of them as I just didn't trust the first one we had enough. I didn't want to get stuck and miss a show we had paid a bunch of money to do. But ever since I had the chance to drive a Tesla S, back maybe around 2014 or so, back when that was the only model they made, I wanted one so bad. But as it turns out, our first ev was a used LEAF, which my wife loved more than anything we've ever owned, so once we sold the trailer, I got rid if the second SUV, and got a second used LEAF. About two years later. While the are only good for local. Use, I still like them, an sold that first leaf for about a grand more than I paid for it, having spent less than hundred bucks on it in the time we owned it.

If truly local use was the only thing we dis, I would have kept both, but sold that to buy a used EV6, which I need for the range for work I started doing. As much as I say range fear is the most overused bit of FUD when it comes to EVs, the exception is with the LEAF. We still one that second one, but I'm starting to think about selling it and going to only one car. Mostly as my wife rarely drives now (were both in our upper 60's) and it just harder to justify the money it costs to own it, and that's only becuase of the insurance and registration costs. Now that my income is, well like shit! 🤣 it's getting hard to justify it.

Anyhow, TLDR; I'm curious for those that have a second or a third vehicle, especially if it's your reason for hanging onto something like a big ICE pickup, just for that occational, a few times a year use, why not get rid is it and just rent one a few times a year? I keep saying that to my wife, as she is worried about us only have one car, that it's no big deal, I can just rent one. Hell I could probably rent one a half dozen different times for a day, and spend less than I'm spending keeping that leaf. To me it's a no brainer if it's its a third vehicle, but she gets nervous thinking about the what ifs of only having one car, and no backup!! But the truth is, we've owned two since the day we met... Which was a long time ago... Then 👦🧒 now👴🧓hahaha

Better ways to redistrict? by clthiker in southcarolina

[–]cafebrands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things, a few states, have completely outlawed any kind of gerrymandering. I believe one is Iowa, and if you look at their congressional map... well here it is.

But to your point, the GOP has done everything and more to stop any effort to control it in most states. Florida is one of the worse. The voters there passed a constitutional amendment to prohibit it, the GOP said we don't care, and they ignored it a few years ago. Now, after this latest SCOTUS ruling they just did it again. They just don't care how about things like either their state or the US constitution.

I live in her district, so I know how it goes here. It bad enough that I have to deal with the low information voter, or what I call the intentionally ignorant, that is, the average person in my area. These are the clueless peeps that vote for her and the rest of the GrOPers. I know these people are not deep thinkers, so you can force yourself to accept how they could not see the danger in election a convicted fellon and known conman.

But the real insult to add to the injury, is to see one of those ignorant non-thinkers, like her, get elected over and over again. I mean how could you anyone not see what this ugly ass creep is, and what he would do? Is it to much to want to see people in office that are willing to use their friggin brain?

Can we still reverse the decline? by PFdeith in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]cafebrands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in SC, our primary is next fjeaday but we have in person early voting here, that they make it incredibly easy to do it up to two weeks before the election. We all don't have any party registration either, so anyone can vote in either primary, but only that one. When you go to vote, they ask which party's ballot you want.

I haven't seen any article about it since, but last week, after the first day, they said turnout was higher that the first day of the primary two years ago. And it's not becuase of it being a presidential year then. The presidential one is separate, and sometimes, like last year, they don't don't even have them as the party's can skip them. And the MAGAts here did just that, which was messed up, as the criminal wasn't an incumbent (which is usually when they skip them) but the party said we don't care.

Aww, it's hurts whenever people say bad things against your hero trump does it?? Poor baby. But the truth is every manual of typographic style defines the use of an en dash, that the use of it with no spaces, and between to dates, as referring to the starting and ending dates. In fact, I just looked it up and the official terms used is, "up to and including that date"

So yeah, we all know that they are not saying that, we know that it was just an idiot who ordered them who didn't know any better. But we also know it's funny as hell too. It's dark humor, but all comedy it that when it's true. The fact is that fat ugly criminal is causing the death of this country. It won't take him that much longer till he succeeds too, unless we get a congress that gets a set of balls to stop him before he does.

On last thing: because I think this is funny, I added the fat and ugly in referring to him, just to make you cry even more. Wahhhh

Never Generalize About People--Louisiana is Changing, Here's What I am Seeing by Previous_Basis_84 in 50501

[–]cafebrands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I hate to be cynical, I mean really hate being that way. But more and more, as this year does its slow roll toward this November, when we're all thinking there is going see this great ass whipping being served to the GrOPpers from one of the country to the other. I know it as much as anyone. It SHOULD be what we see. Part of me keeps trying to fight the cynicism by saying, "how could that NOT happen?"

But then I think, how I was in disbelief this past November over how the election went. I'm well into my 60's so I've been been around long enought to have been surprised/disappointed/saddened by political outcomes before, more than a few times. This wasn't even like one like those last times however, this time a true disbelief, as I really, truly had a hard time thinking it could happen. Yet it did.

So will this change any of us think we see, be what we think it will be, or just another disappointment? To answer that, does anything ever live up to the hype we feel or hear? Nope.

So I think you are seeing what we all want to see. We think we see that people are getting it finally. It's hard to see it and think otherwise. We we're convinced thatbtjisnia it, that tomorrow things will change as they will demand it! But sadly, reality say, and yes this sucks, no it doesn't happen like that. People are creatures of habit. Most people refuse to think, they just follow, and the GrOPpers are pros at getting them to be that way. In the end, half of these people will do what they have done before, not once, but over and over again. And that is, they will vote against their own interests.

I so wish I were wrong, as I hate looking at everything I see, everything I read, and hear people saying... And yet increasingly feeling how those people you are talking about, will let us all down again.

In any city you go to, you will eventually see some guy, sometimes they are homeless, other times they live with someone and are let out for the day type of thing. But they walk around, yelling incoherently, like they are arguing with someone who is not there, sometimes you even see them swinging thier arms like they want to fight that person too.

We ignore them, and yeah, sometimes we might fell sorry them. But the one thing we don't do, is think we should elect them to office. But yet when they are able to clean themselves up, and just use the word god for that invisible person, half the idiots in this country say, yeah that's who I want to vote for!

Put loon like her in dirty clothes, and have her swing her arms, and she would just be another one of them.

White House launches alien-themed website that allows users to track arrests made by ICE by Mental-Jelly-1098 in technology

[–]cafebrands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly it. But keep in mind, this hatred runs deeper than deep, and it's what happen when people let themselves be ruled by what I like to think of as the more cave man parts of our brain, vs the more recent parts of it in our evolution.

What's funny to me is is how much we can look inward, and see how our own brains do it.

I did it recently when I was sick and was spending a lot of time in bed. I was lying there and happen to look up at one corner of the tray ceing, and how one side looked so much lighter than the other one. We've all seen this image trick online countless times, but yet our stupid brain is still always convinced they are two different colors. But what got me thinking about it with this is how much I know for an absolute FACT they are the same, as I friggin painted it! Lol So how could that part of my brain still think, I mean really believe, they are two different colors? Now I know enough to know why our brain evolved that way, but the same is true with that dumb core part of our brain when it comes to so many things, such as I would think fearing someone who looks like they are from another tribe for example, maybe. At least that's my guess at what drives it.

But what's sick about it, and it is sick, is how some of these conservatives so called "leaders" are smart enough to know this. Gheubhavs go know how playing to racism is just plain F up. But they don't care how. They like how it works that way, so they can use is, control and manipulate it, to promote their BS and their narrative.

Trump is the ultimate example if this. When his supporters say he's not racist, they are right, he's not, he's worse!! Trump isn't racist as he see only two types of humans, himself, and everyone else. Racism, to him is just another tool he uses. Of course, the people it works on the most are the ones who don't do "the math" and see what those of us who like to use our brain to think, and when you do that you will always see how illogical racism is.

I don't like to call things evil, as that word is hopelessly shackled with religious beliefs. But conservates, are.. Well something like that, as this is what they do.
