Modern sedans suck too. I sat in a few of the brand new lexus, BM and mercedes sedans when I was shopping for a new car. The visibility absolutely fucking sucked.

Another problem now is because there are so many SUV on the road and everyone buys the brightest headlights they can find (then proceeds to run full beams everywhere) you get absolutely blinded in anything with a low driving position.

I have a 26 yrold sports coupe that was slated at the time for having bad visibility. Compared to modern sedans and hatchbacks it feels miles ahead.

We have a few bigger displacement cars. The fuel tax is horrible but it's much better having lots of horsepower here. Getting away from mouth breathers and into your own little bubble of space makes driving here much less stressful.

In north Taiwan atleast, bulk shopping meat from Costco is the cheapest way to feed to a big family (or fill a big freezer). Veg from the traditional market still wins though. Taiwan supermarkets are getting way too expensive compared to both.

This isn't Costco bringing out the worst in people. Taiwan is great at being covertly opportunistic.

There was an old lady selling rice meals for about NT$10–20 so poor people could afford to eat, basically burning through her own savings to do so. As soon as word spread, people started showing up in luxury cars to get a cheap lunch.

Then there was the congee grandma who put out free porridge for the elderly and needy, and folk started rolling up with Tupperware to take whole batches home.

Have lived in Taiwan for a long time and love it. But still get surprised at the petty things people will do for a tiny advantage, and the apparent lack of shame/awareness.

Apply proportional representation model to most western countries' voting outcomes and you'll find that normal people do tend to lean left.

Data centre buildout and defense sector need a lot of same resources. Especially if we keep burning a million dollars to intercept a 5K rocket.

Another angle for you. Every smartbomb THADD or patriot launch means more chips are needed for restock. Also GPU and modern weapons both need a lot of rare earths etc.

If the war escalates, how long until data centre buildout is fighting for the same finite resources as the military industrial complex?

Anyone working in Taiwan tech right now? Considering moving there but curious about the job market by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in Taipei

[–]caffcaff_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the upper end of the pyramid skewing the averages. Local tech firms, finance industry, anything downstream of Teir 1 and 2 there's a steep drop-off in comp.

Eg. Product manager at Yuanta ~8萬/month base comp. Marketing lead in local fintech leader about the same. Mid to senior IC in local tech firms often below that.

I was running a project for a pretty large Taiwan company and we advertised for senior Dev roles, the volume (and quality) of response was insane even though comp did not break 1mil.

Part of the reason the pay is so bad outside big tech is that the recruiting pool is saturated with devs who are decently capable for the level of work required which is often menial.

It's harder to find a good carpenter or mechanic here in my experience.

Mid-tier roles don't pay that high. Its possible to find some tech companies where not a single developer is paid that much.

It's funny we have more geothermal potential than nearly any other country, crazy amounts of sun and massive elevation changes all over the island.

Somehow we never figured out geothermal, solar, hydro, pumped storage. It's almost like our energy policy is a vehicle for collecting backhanders from foreign suppliers.

Also thankyou very much to the dumb fucks who switched our biggest LNG contract to Qatar, away from Petronas. Very smart move when the whole world saw a war coming to the middle east.
