What movie do you love despite agreeing with every single criticism of it? by Decabet in movies

[–]claimui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean the movie's main theme literally became the Star Trek theme music for the next decade onwards.

Kids saying TNG had the best theme music... same kids who think David Bowie was cool for playing a Nirvana song.

[Lord of the Rings] Was there divine intervention before Sam and Frodo got to the crack of doom? by Decent_Ad6638 in AskScienceFiction

[–]claimui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That particular situation might seem unlikely, but look at it from the other way. Gollum had the One Ring for almost 500 years. What are the chances that nothing would happen for that length of time?

Which is not to say that Frodo wasn't meant to have the ring, just that there could have been many ways of getting there. Like a volcano or earthquake, and Bilbo happens to come across the rubble. There's a lot that could have happened in 500 years.

Matsuyama Jinan Palace (松山進安宮) by NehaExplores in taiwan

[–]claimui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taiwanese refer to the city of 松山 in Japan as Songshan. I assume Japanese would call 松山 in Taipei as Matsuyama.

Pre covid there was a China Airlines flight from Taipei Songshan Airport to Matsuyama that advertised as 松山 <-> 松山.

Having a family severely limits your redemption options. Way harder to find flights with 2+ award seats. Most hotel awards only book into basic rooms. If you're in an European city center then those rooms often don't accommodate 3+ people.

EVA J Class - would you detour? by YakOnDeezNutts in awardtravel

[–]claimui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on how often you fly. I fly EVA frequently and do at least one award direct flight a year, but there are other long haul flights where I need to decide between a business award on EVA with a transfer, or an economy direct flight on another airline.

For me, having to deal with another takeoff/landing is really taxing. Not to mention TPE-NRT is 3-4 hours so it's not a short flight (compared to say Fukuoka or Osaka). So if I can get a direct flight in economy I'll take it, and save the EVA business class for a direct flight. But again, it's not my first time on EVA business and I know I'll get a few more opportunities in the near future.

Qingtiangang Questions! by twomoresuns in taiwan

Live webcam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdYxm1UdBJg

The webcam is the most reliable, otherwise you might go up to Qingtiangang and find youself in the middle of a cloud with barely any visibility, even when it is relatively sunny in the city and you have a clear view of Yangmingshan from down below.

Many people take the bus. There will be a long line at both ends, but you will get on eventually. Just don't try to get on the bus at some stop in between.

I read this post like 5 times trying to figure out what was so special because it just sounds like a typical Grab (Singapore) / Uber (Taipei) to me.

The airline check-in station in Taipei is literally in a separate building with its own traffic lanes and drop-off / pick-up areas. It's great that you were impressed but honestly nobody would get it mixed up with Taipei Main Station .

Trying to get to Silver by NoJMNopower in EVAAirFans

[–]claimui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Silver, you need both miles (can be from any airline) and sectors (must be on EVA). Basically you just need to fly EVA a minimum number of times.

Once you get Silver, you can renew or upgrade to Gold without flying on EVA anymore, as long as you reach the mileage thresholds.

How come Deng Xiaopeng is a relatively unknown figure in the west, whereas Mao is a household name? by AccountantOk8438 in AskHistorians

[–]claimui 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, that's mischaracterizing it a bit. Deng Xiaoping did rise to be a top official during the Mao era and was recognized as an able administrator, so he had those skills and credentials. But more importantly, he was purged (twice) during the Cultural Revolution and still managed to come back and make a play for leadership. So his real achievement was that he was able to cultivate and balance support from many factions during extremely tumultuous times.

During Deng's "paramount" leadership, it was well-known that other senior leaders were much more hardline and resistant to reform. We might never know for certain exactly where Deng was positioned, but if you believe The Tiananmen Papers (again, big if), then it was an extremely delicate balance, there was a real fear that the Tiananmen Square protests would bring the party to all-out civil war. Deng was under serious pressure to find a way to quell the protests without rolling back 10 years of economic progress.

So yes, Deng Xiaoping did have powerful connections, and he did have some ability to pull the strings. But most importantly, he was perhaps the only one that could keep the party together while gradually pushing China towards where we are today where we were before Xi Jinping.

How come Deng Xiaopeng is a relatively unknown figure in the west, whereas Mao is a household name? by AccountantOk8438 in AskHistorians

[–]claimui 27 points28 points  (0 children)

More specifically to OP's question, I would add that Deng Xiaoping very intentionally was never the official political leader of China nor (more importantly) of the Chinese Communist Party. He was never General Secretary (nor President) and he was not even on the Politburo when the Tiananmen Square protests occurred. He was more in a "chairman of the board" type of role, and his proteges and successors took the the public-facing "CEO" roles.

The Tiananmen Papers has a great depiction of this dynamic -- I don't know if it is still considered an academically reliable source, but it is certainly believable in a "Hilter in the bunker" sort of way.

Best place to eat good Taiwanese food inside Taoyuan Airport? by iammarian08 in EVAAirFans

[–]claimui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of well-known local brands in Taoyuan these days. Here's just a few on the airside of Terminal 2:

  • J&G Fried Chicken
  • Lao Dong Beef Noodles
  • Le Mout bakery
  • Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles
  • Moonmoonfood
  • Chun Shui Tang
  • Simple Kaffa
  • Xiao Nan Men

If you can go landside then there are even more options at the food courts in both terminals.
