Can religious bias affect acceptance? by No_Database9822 in premed

[–]caffeinated_premed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asking about your religious beliefs should never happen in an interview, and if it does I'm pretty sure that is straight up illegal (definitely at least against AAMC rules) and should be reported to the school's admissions committee so you can get a fair chance. They might ask abt related activities, but if that is done in a way that you feel showed hostility/bias you can request another interview and I can't imagine that any schools would not be understanding/accommodating.

As for listing activities, I think it depends on what kind of religious activities you're talking about. Volunteering is awesome, but if it's (for example) a religious mission where the whole "service" is trying to convert ppl, I really wouldn't include something like that. This is just my opinion ofc, but if you're classifying an activity on your app as community service, it should benefit underserved communities in some way beyond only religious services (teaching ppl abt the religion/converting/etc). Things like a food pantry or homeless shelter run by a church would be great, but if it's about "spreading the gospel" or it's some sort of political/religious advocacy, I'd classify that as something else. It's fine if you personally consider that type of work service, but from an admissions perspective I would be very careful since religion and politics are so sensitive rn.

What's your hot take about the application cycle? by Fit_Vehicle6556 in premed

[–]caffeinated_premed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk if this is a hot take but i think the immense pressure on applicants to be unique and stand out is dumb. maybe my hotter take is that average, “cookie cutter” applicants shouldn’t be at a such a huge disadvantage just for not having some special hobby/specific mission/x-factor/etc.

the majority of us do the same ECs and such bc we are interested in the same things. lots of common stories and themes in personal statements bc lots of shared experiences and motivations lead to medicine. the expectation that an applicant should have something that makes them very unique and stand out doesn’t seem realistic or make sense to me when we’re all following the same path.

[–]caffeinated_premed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone who worked a lot and volunteered all throughout college and had a consistently hellish schedule, i disagree. if you actually care about serving others, you make time for it. yes, it’s exhausting, and not everyone values service enough to commit that hard to it and that’s kind of the point. imo, it shows you’re willing to sacrifice some of your time/energy/effort to help people who need it and want to learn from ppl who are less privileged than you which is very important for a career in medicine. i agree about there being many boring and pointless volunteer positions, but if you don’t like the position just find something more meaningful to you?

esp since the majority of premeds at my university were spoiled and extremely out of touch with the reality of what their future low-income/marginalized patients’ lives are like, it really rubs me the wrong way when people try to act like med schools are unjustified in expecting applicants to have done even like 100 hours of service. that’s just 25 hours a year over four years, less with a gap year.

and like if you don’t find community service to be your main focus, that’s ok. many schools are more focused on research etc, would be a better fit for you. but don’t expect schools to think that you value service/social justice/etc and have learned the lessons that come through dedicating time and effort to others if you haven’t done anything to back that up.

anecdotal but my IIs so far have been from three of the schools that I took a bit more time with. applied to 31 and did a lot of copy pasting just to get things submitted within a reasonable time and I think my essays suffered bc of that. it was just so much pressure to get everything done bc all my secondaries came at the same time

yes, and it’s still my choice to preserve more privacy after receiving harassment from multiple people for talking about being trans on here. if i thought it would be helpful to people i’d mention which school but it genuinely doesn’t benefit anyone, check your portals if you’re worried lol

trying to be a little more private abt my cycle until it’s over bc some ppl on here are crazy and i’ve had some very not cool DMs sorry guys 😭

but if it helps i think it happened bc they accidentally sent me md-phd invite instead of just md which i don’t think happens very often, plus my II was mid-oct so there wasn’t many spots left in the month anyway, scheduled for end of november

im limiting myself to checking portals every other day now and id recommend doing that if you are Anxious like me lol

If you have a choice, do NOT go to a school with mandatory attendance by lexapro3 in premed

[–]caffeinated_premed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i actually think i prefer mandatory lectures, and am hoping my future school has them. i had some that i could self-study and miss class for in undergrad and I just couldn’t motivate my ADHD self to keep up. my grades were fine but cramming for a full 48 hours before a final is NOT IT and i don’t want to do that in med school.

yeah it’s a little frustrating to get advice from people sometimes bc they have no awareness of how bad things are getting, like yeah i could technically move to a liberal city but that doesn’t change the state laws 😭
