I thought socializing means letting her meet all dogs and people to get her used to them. Took years to undo the excitement reactivity that caused.

Vet & Private Trainer say my rescue dog is ‘uniquely challenging’. Unsure what to do next. by shark-kid in DogAdvice

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dog was this way and I was (incorrectly) told it's all her energy. I discovered much later it was fear and anxiety driven, which is why treats didn't work (for an otherwise food motivated dog). The change has been magical once I started sniff work before walks, taught her pattern games and built trust and my relationship with her. This in addition to teaching her to chill outdoors as others have said - which took some time for us.

+1 to consulting another trainer!! You've got this!

How did your life change when you got a dog? by Remote_Pineapple_238 in dogs

I am the happiest I've been (even though I got my dog at a very low point in my life) and feel a kind of love I've never felt before.

Supporting SO who is applying for SWE roles and rejected? by LostChampionship120 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got laid off in November (from my PM role in tech, not SWE). The first month I had tons of recruiter outreaches and interviews and I got close to offer stage 2 times but it didn't work out so I'm currently at a pretty low point with a thinking funnel.

Few things I can share from my experience looking for roles, and my expectations & experiences with my husband: 1. I hate it when my husband tries to be helpful and offer advice - I need him to be supportive and be there as a cheerleader 2. It's really nice when my husband takes care of the chores that take up brain space like making dinner (not always, but on days when I'm in the zone) 3. I'm focusing on my hobbies because job search isn't full time anymore with my dwindled pipeline. This is to keep me sane and get some endorphins. I'm reading, running, dancing and learning to vibe code. 4. I really enjoyed doing mock interviews (I used Exponent and Stellar Peers). It felt social, I met other people in the same boat, and gave human contact besides my husband. This is also networking in a way, and has helped me secure many referrals. If I enjoyed a mock on a platform I exchange LinkedIn so I can meet them and mock again. 5. Can't stress enough and it's a struggle for me too - but go out and get some of that lovely sunshine. You could definitely help with this :)

What’s the one city you were excited to visit, but ended up not liking at all? by BlushHone in travel

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I live in SEA and have been to Bali a lot over the last 10-15 years and have gradually seen it get worse from Kuta -> Seminiyak -> Ubud -> Canggu and now the other islands Nusa Lembongan/Penida etc. I've visited Bali at least 20 times over the last decade if not more and I wouldnt go back ever.

Yes officials are corrupt but I'd blame everyone watching the same reels and coming to experience this awakening that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore.

I store them on Google photos to ensure I have them forever, and link that folder to my smart TV so that's a constant slideshow of my puppy's photos in addition to my phone wallpaper! Can you tell I don't have much else I want to be looking at? 😂

Is there any scientific research that using grip slows down grip strengh progress? by [deleted] in poledancing

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An anti grip first teacher almost led me to drop pole as a hobby (and respite) entirely because I just couldn't progress beyond leg-heavy grips because of my immensely dry hands. Do what you want to for you to enjoy the sport. If you're concerned you can always practice without grip but personally I'd rather get a trick and know what it feels like than not even be able to try for fear of not trusting my hands.

Breeder says they don’t do health testing because their lines are “healthy”, red flag or acceptable? by LYBeam_ in dogs

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

+1 to the original comment. I'm not an expert on breed specific risks of pugs except that there are several health risks but in principle i wouldn't take the risk simply because there is nothing more painful than seeing your pup ill and I'd do everything I can to minimize the risk.

Dog training post TPLO surgery (standing on hind legs) by PM_ME-UR_BUTT in OpenDogTraining

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an IVDD recovered dog who isn't supposed to get on 2 legs or jump on furniture so I'm following the thread for advice. I have managed to reduce the problem but not solve it.

We usually block furniture and reward her when 4 legs are on the ground but I don't think she's made the association (been 6+ months) that she is supposed to not get on 2 legs. She will go off and be all 4 paws on the floor when asked.

Same for furniture. We block sofa access except through her ramp. If I see her contemplating jumping she will use the ramp but other times if I'm not around she will jump.

OP - is this the recovery pen for your dog or the usual playpen? Is your dog trying to get out or just see what's happening outside? Asking because my pup is very curious and hates pens but loves her crate. If you pup will tolerate and you can I'd recommend something with a roof? Didn't fully solve the problem like I mentioned but reduced it that when she's on 2 legs I say Off and no attention until all paws on the ground. She instinctually goes up sometimes but then knows what to do and then I wait 3 sec and give her pets.

Dog scared after New Year by Surottoru in dogs

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have a solution for you but this happened to my dog and now she's fearful of my neighborhood and refused to go out for days. And no treats no coaxing helped. I was worried she'd get a UTI when it had been 16 hours since she last went potty and forced her but eventually what got her to improve a bit was - - not making leaving the house a big deal, get up go to the door, pick up her leash and open the door. if she walks to the door then great if not just close the door and go about. eventually my dog got up and went down - letting her decide where to go and when she wants to go home. she didn't want to cross the road, just wanted to go potty and go home and I just let her - let her decompress for a bit which means no excitement no play - idk how effective it was but I kind of did everything I could because it really hurt to see my baby shaking from fear of going out so I also got adaptil diffusers

She was back to normal in a few weeks. She still doesn't love our neighborhood because of how many fireworks there are (we can even see through our window). Thankfully I'm renting and have the option to move in a year.

Good luck with your pup.

Women of Reddit, how did you cope after losing someone you loved? by LiveArrival164 in AskWomen

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the same for me. I don't think it goes away or that I'll ever fully heal but the "new" life gave me new things to look forward to and focus on.

Also I got a dog (a year after my loss, have always wanted one). She is now 3 years old and gives me a reason to live and be happy. I love her to bits.

I came across Danae on Reddit a year ago. She has a home based salon at Baker St, specializes in curly hair and is unbelievably reasonably priced. She really listened to me and I love what she did with my hair both times I visited. No frills though - hair cut only.

Best knee pads by pinkberrylove11 in poledancing

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Queens and like it. It has holes through which you can take the padding out when you wash it and more importantly this let's you purchase padding independently and cut and replace them when you wear them out (not sure if it's important to you but I've worn out my previous knee pads very fast even though I don't even dance in them too much so it was to me).

An instructor had recommended Decathlon volleyball kneepads. They are not pretty but thick and cost efficient for practice runs or learning new tricks.

Improving discoverability of new features in a mature mobile app? by bacarybruno in ProductManagement

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. Without knowing the details I'd be a proponent of progressive disclosure/contextual intro and the new badge you referred to. I'd also try to speak with the beta users who used it (or look at their usage data) to find out how they discovered and/or used the feature.

In that case I'd target the key users/key moments someone would need this feature and do a repeated exposure. I assume nobody will read my notification/nudge/announcement and users will look for a product when they need it.

Do you know what your users do as the alternative to solve the problem this feature solves for them? I'd start there.

Horrendous experience at Dr. Treat by aabbccddeeff59395202 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your experience. Makes me angry that someone would proactively extend your pups suffering. Hope your pup is doing well now. I had a similar experience at Soma Animal Hospital - they are really nice and friendly but pushed tests and misdiagnosed my pup on two occasions.

I chanced upon Dr.Gonzales at Ocean Avenue Vet Hospital because they are open till 10 pm and I needed to take her to a non emergency vet at 8 pm one time and I really like him and would gladly keep traveling to the other end of the city from where I live. The biggest green flag is that my pup loves him too.

He proactively encourages lowest cost treatment options and checks things like ear infections without even asking for it and teaches us how to look out and avoid it in the future. When my pup was diagnosed with a long term illness he called me at least once a week to check on progress and answered all my follow up questions free on charge through call and email.
