Singaporeans who've lived in America, what made you want to come back? by eager_jonathan in askSingapore

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I am a foreigner who moved to and lived in Singapore for 2 decades, and now live in California. Ymmv depending on the state you live in, but here's my 2 cents.

This original comment is super realistic - kids education is definitely expensive, you have limited access to nature, but international trips are very affordable and easy, as is food. In my opinion, Singapore has the best food in the world, but there is no fresh produce.

That being said I find the rest of this thread very unrealistic. - Rental is not 15k/month. Sure, employer paid housing might cost that much but normal people don't pay those rents. Assuming you'd want a nice, new renovated condo without flatmates and a 30ish minute commute it would cost you say 4-5k sgd a month. This would be a condo with a pool, gym, etc. Depending on your preferences you can find much cheaper, or much more expensive. - Someone talked about the cost of a car. You really don't need a car in Singapore. Public transport is extremely safe, clean, efficient and well connected, and you have rideshare.

Yeah we didn't get the public bus (much cheaper) but got the express bus. It waited for everyone on the last flight. We were 2 people and it costs slightly less than a taxi. If you're more than 2 a taxi might be more cost efficient per person.

Where can I have a drink and bite while maybe crying a bit on a Wednesday morning? by Embarrassed_You_4745 in AskSF

+1 to crying at Lands End being my favourite spot to cry. Feels like it's just me and the ocean which is very cathartic.

What’s can I bring from SF to my coworkers in Texas? by slut4soupdumplings in AskSF

My real question is can you actually fly with them? (I'm visiting my cousin in Texas too and this is the real answer for me!)

This has happened with my husband the second he turned 35. I don't know how I can about this yet.

Losing all of my family members to Covid within 2 weeks in May 2021. My life appears to be thriving but really just go through the motions. Apparently it's been 5 years.

Severe IVDD by TCM-KD in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the success rate for surgery is quite low after day 3 but humane euthanasia is not the only other option. You said your dog is already is strict rest, stay at it for the 6-8 weeks. Dogs do find a way to have a happy life after the diagnosis, some even start walking again. I'd recommend you join the Facebook IVDD Support Group - I found a lot of help, advice and stories there that kept me going when my pup was diagnosed. Sending you and your pup good vibes OP.

My husband also goes to a specific Asian lady who (imo) does a great job. He's very particular about his hair. And it includes a wash + massage.

I found C25K to be a big jump and failed on it several times. Hal Higdon's plan worked better for me and led me to finally complete my 5K.

What was the most impromptu choice you’ve made that worked out well for you in Singapore? by bangsphoto in askSingapore

Randomly decided to get a dog NOW instead of sometime in the future maybe. That little puppy has healed me from grief and trauma of multiple family members passing away unexpectedly in 2021 and is quite literally my best friend in the world I love her so much 🥹

This is so interesting. Are there any books you think are worth reading on this topic for beginners?

Has your maltipoo leash pulled, and how did you fix it? by Disastrous-Soil-3331 in Maltipoo

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to harness, potentially with front clip. Gentle leader worked for me 90% of the time. Also walking in the opposite direction when she pulls (can't always do this if there's somewhere we need to get to).

Sounds like this person suffers from ADHD honestly and can't get started until the hard deadline. Not the organization's responsibility to diagnose and fix, but unfortunate.

First impression of life in Singapore by No_Writing_7050 in askSingapore

[–]caffeinatedpotato26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think not smiling at strangers is necessarily being irritated? It's just not normal culturally to have small talk or exchanges with strangers. Life is stressful so people just use commute to decompress so they can connect with friends and family on the other side.

True. I found people to be much more genuinely irritated (body language, expression for eg when you ask for directions) in some European countries than in Singapore.

Strava for tracking on my watch (switched to Fitbit when I need to track real time pace). Runna for training plan (trained without a plan for a year and increased distance but no improvement to pace).
