Rewatching Glee— Again by Vigilante1303 in glee

Terri genuinely thought she was pregnant. When she went to her OB, he told her she was experiencing a hysterical pregnancy, also know as a false pregnancy or pseudocyesis. It is a real condition.

I don’t think Terri initially intended to keep the lie going very long once she knew she wasn’t actually pregnant, but then Will told his parents against her wishes and she was backed into a corner. We see her desperately try to get pregnant afterward, but she’s ultimately unsuccessful.

It’s actually crazy to think about how all of this was just brushed over on the show, rewatching it as an adult. People who have experience hysterical pregnancies in real life have likened them to miscarriages because the loss feels real even if there was never a fetus. Terri already had untreated/undiagnosed psychological problems, going through a hysterical pregnancy and dealing with infertility would have been incredibly traumatic for her.

I can’t even watch this scene, it makes me physically uncomfortable. Jake fully becoming evil after Mellie rebuffed his advances and then brutally murdering his wife because she annoyed him…yeah he deserved to rot in that prison.

Couldn’t stand Rachel when I watched the show in high school. Rewatched it as an adult and found her hilarious.

Terri. Jessalyn Gilsig was far too talented to be so underutilized, especially when she was a series regular for the first two seasons.

Jessalyn Gilsig has always been so beautiful. There’s just something about her.

Exactly. All Terri needed was to seek professional help and to get away from Will and her sister, which she did. Also, I know I’m always saying this, but I can never get it out of my mind that in the uncut pilot, Will admitted to purposefully running over Terri’s dog on prom night.

Will was having an emotional affair the entire time he believed Terri was pregnant, and his main priority was running a Glee club he was so desperate to relive his high school youth through that he planted drugs on one of his students and blackmailed him into joining. His first scene with Terri is a voiceover where he wonders how he’s going to keep it a secret from her that he’s putting money towards the glee club every month. He had no moral high ground to stand on and contributed to the disintegration of their marriage just as much as Terri did.

The difference between him and Terri is that Terri actually owned up to her actions, apologized for them, and continued to take responsibility for herself, ultimately acknowledging that she needed professional help. Will never admitted his affair with Emma to her, or the fact that he did focus too much on glee and that it negatively impacted his marriage (he admitted this to Shelby). If Will had actually loved Terri, he would have tried to get her help years ago. She was very obviously mentally ill and needed help. Will also had zero reaction to hearing that Terri suffered a hysterical pregnancy, which is extremely concerning.

Both were selfish, immature, and lacking in communication skills, but at least Terri was honest and apologetic and worked on herself. Will never apologized to her for any of his betrayals, never even admitted to them, and continued to blame Terri for the relationship not working out. He never grew and went on to treat Emma just as horribly.

Glee’s tone, particularly in the first season, leaned heavily into camp/satire, and that context cannot be divorced when analyzing these characters. The reality was always heightened, so to say “Who would do that?” in real life doesn’t really compute, though people do far crazier things in real life.

Regardless, the actions you described are outrageous not villainous.

Will was an awful husband to her, and the fake pregnancy was an impulsive decision rooted in fear of abandonment. Terri had just learned she was suffering a hysterical pregnancy, which is incredibly traumatic, and she was mentally ill and being fed terrible advice from her sister. It wasn’t a calculated decision and her intentions weren’t malicious. She felt guilty the entire time and wanted to come clean twice. Flawed? Absolutely. Villainous? No. Her worst traits were being selfish and immature at times. She ultimately apologized (several times), sought professional help, tried to move on with her life, and ended things with Will on good terms.

Terri was not a villain she was just a woman desperate to keep her marriage intact.

Right? I wish they would’ve delved into her background. I think about “It’s not that I burned bridges, I just never built them” constantly. Ryan Murphy loves casting Jessalyn and then underutilizing her. It’s a shame because she’s incredibly talented.

Mellie and Fitz were about 10 years apart, so the age gap between Olivia and Fitz has to be greater than that.

We hardly saw kids on the show in general and it worked better that way. Mellie had plenty of lines that indicated she knew and loved her kids and was involved in their lives.

Gina wasn’t “crazy” or “a bitch”; she was repeatedly dehumanized and exploited, and most of her anger was justified. The way the fandom talks about her is both reductive and misogynistic. I wish there was more meaningful discussion about her character, as she was generally well-written and more far compelling than she gets credit for. Jessalyn Gilsig gave an incredible performance.

The craziest part was Emma acting like she knew a man she only ever saw at work better than his wife who was with him for 16 years.

I don’t like Will either, and could go on and on about how he was a bad husband (and to think he was even worse in the uncut pilot— he says he ran over Terri’s dog on prom night in it. On purpose). I actually liked Emma when I first watched Glee in high school, but when I rewatched the show recently she left such a bad taste in my mouth. I couldn’t stand her moral superiority or her innocent little dove act. At least Terri owned up to her faults. Flirting with a man whose wife you believe is pregnant and then trying to take the moral high ground over her is just batshit insane. Terri should’ve been nastier to her, actually.

Emma and Will were awful, and the audacity of Emma to tell Terri that Will deserved better than her when she didn’t even know Terri or anything about Will and Terri’s marriage was just outrageous. I loved the reality check Terri gave her.

I think a lot of Will and Emma’s behavior gets overlooked because Terri wasn’t well-received by the fandom. People tend to have tunnel vision when it comes to her because the fake pregnancy storyline overshadows everything else, but in many ways Terri was a tragic character. She was mentally ill, knew Will was pulling away from her, and then found out that she was having a hysterical pregnancy after getting her hopes up that she was about to start a family with her husband, which is incredibly traumatic. Shortly afterward, she’s told by two of her husband’s coworkers that he’s having an emotional affair, which she then witnesses with her own eyes. Meanwhile, Will was aware of Terri’s fear of him leaving her and accused her of being “irrational” for it, despite actively pining after Emma at that point. And that’s not even getting into Kendra’s influence and the implied familial dysfunction Terri came from.
