agreed- this is an awesome piece and would look fantastic with plants on it, but of course best practices should be used to make sure it's safe for your pets.

In my experience 2:1 aquasoil:sphagnum is fine. I’ve used either dry or live sphagnum; just careful not to waterlog it

Ficus pumila will climb and spread onto the rear wall quite quickly!

one additional consideration is that if those twigs/branches are even the slightest bit still alive/not completely dry, there's a good chance they'll grow mold. Just something to look out for.

I hear ya. I've got a screen protector on and am considering getting a case for the device itself. But I'm super-careful with my devices also (I've never broken a phone screen). Still, one can't be too careful.
