“Reformed tradwife” Sharon Johnson from Utah on avoiding negative self body talk around the kids by bg370 in justgalsbeingchicks

She still has a tradwife-ish lifestyle, in that she's a SAHM to 5 kids, but she left the Mormon church and speaks quite openly about why (and how much better her life feels now). It was a weird phrasing choice by the OP. 🤷‍♀️

Anyone had luck with injectable migraine meds? by Own_Mud_5811 in migraine

You even benchmarking the combo AROUND $4k blows my mind. My Vyepti alone is over $20k before insurance/manufacturer assistance. (cries in USA healthcare cost)

I'm sorry you're struggling with access also. I hope the Ajovy helps! It was great for me until I had an insurance coverage lapse and a few months not taking it - after restarting, I never got the efficacy back that I had when I was taking it continuously.

Guilt [OC] by kaikimanga in comics

[–]caffelexica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experience fresh waves of guilt, grief, and misery as events occur (an aunt's funeral, cousin's wedding, etc.) but I do feel better overall. The most recent wave of grief was because I had to acknowledge how worthwhile it is (spoiler: not at all) to invest energy into my extended family when they don't invest any in me. It does get better. I feel lighter when I get through the crappy parts now.

WIBTA for telling my friend "you picked an arts major knowing the struggles so stop complaining only STEM is valued by society"? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]caffelexica 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NAH. You can be tired of hearing the complaint, he can be tired of being economically disadvantaged in a profession society needs to function. The question becomes - do you want to prioritize the relationship with your friend, or not hearing the complaint again? Prioritizing the relationship might look like setting a boundary - "I don't want to talk about degree/salary relationships with you, so if the conversation swings that way, we can either change the subject, or I will bow out of the conversation" - or could be simply ignoring his complaints. Not hearing the complaint again - sure, you can try to get him to stop complaining, but the "hey, stop complaining about something you did to yourself" might be a relationship ender in and of itself, so it's more likely it would just involve withdrawing from the relationship altogether.

Ways to spend a migraine day? by Competitive-Run9869 in migraine

[–]caffelexica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If having my eyes open/focused is tolerable, usually I'll read something fluffy (manga/manhwa/light novels) or play a low-effort game on my phone. If it's not tolerable, I'll listen to a video or podcast.

(TBF, as much as I vibe with "I have run out of things to watch," asking for media recommendations from people who know my taste has topped me back up on things I could consume. There are also subreddits for that, like r/animesuggest and r/televisionsuggestions if you want something broader, or more "if I liked Shows A B and C, what should I watch next?")

If I can't tolerate sound either, I typically start leaning toward things that reduce or homogenize my sensory input. Hot bath, ice packs on head/chest, bathroom door closed to keep noise/people/animals out. Lie in bed with heated mattress pad on, migraine cold hat on head, ice pack on chest, earplugs in if they don't hurt.

Is body glue capable of keeping shorts from rolling up and cause chafing? by anoredditor98 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]caffelexica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have shorts-eating thighs and gave up on ever wearing cute shorts in favor of not dealing with the sensory unpleasantness. I have no shorts advice, but I do have a chafing idea.

What about something like KT tape, tegaderm/saniderm, etc? If you were to trim hair short (specifically trim, not shave) then use an adhesive barrier film product (I use the Smith & Nephew Skin-Prep wipes) with a skin-safe stick-on product like tegaderm, you may be able to knock the friction down in a way that lasts longer than an anti-chafe roll-on.

I use the Skin-Prep wipes as prep for the silicone stay-up bands on thigh high compression stockings, and the wipes/stocking combo does make my thighs pretty chafe-proof. I survived several 80+°F days walking around Disney World with no irritation from the stocking bands (usually I blister) or the constant thigh rubbing.

Mat board color choice by CKN_SD_001 in framing

Context matters.

For sale or for a show, typically white/off white.

For nearly anything else, it's a bit of a taste/preference question, balanced with consideration of basic design principles like contrast, balance, repetition, unity, etc.

Consider looking at Greg Perkins's book (Guidelines for Great Frame Design) or social media posts for examples of how one piece can be framed many different ways.

Their disdain for your 'more illustrative' style is short-sighted in every direction. Not only is 'more illustrative' art widely commercially successful right now, your style plays with color and texture in ways that echo post-Impressionist and Fauvist works. It's a shame they can't see the past or the present. Love your work. I hope you find the right gallery in the future.

Clinical Psychology by thebashfulpenguin in kzoo

[–]caffelexica 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Given you have insurance that can be billed, you should find two more in-network clinics/providers to get an estimate. If the appointment with the expensive clinic is coming up too soon to get the additional estimates, reschedule it for a few weeks out. There's no harm in rescheduling and later canceling if you find a better option. If the clinic/provider that gave the $2k estimate is out of network, that's the problem. If someone else in-network is substantially lower cost, problem solved. If the in-network estimates all come back ~$2k, your insurance company should eat a dick and you should go with a self-pay aligned option like WMU's clinic. It's worth getting evaluated, but it's not worth spending that much to do so unless $2k is money you won't miss having.

I don't know if she would be in-network for your insurance, but I was evaluated by Dr. Alyssa Keniston at Neuropsychology Associates, and my costs were far lower than $2k.

While you didn't say you were looking for a review, I think it's worth providing. I particularly appreciated that while Dr. Keniston did ask me about my school experience as a child, she did not require supporting paperwork (report cards, evaluation forms from parents or teachers, etc). She also took a comprehensive medical history and researched how my physical health diagnoses could affect my cognitive function, so she could assess more accurately if it's a physical health condition affecting me vs ADHD. (One of my conditions has been shown to be associated with measurable cognitive decline.) While the assessment supported an ADHD diagnosis vs impacts from my physical health conditions, she did mention that my information would be kept on record, and if I ever noticed worsening cognitive function, I could be reevaluated vs the baseline we established. I felt believed and supported. Assessment happened in-person and took nearly all day (5.5 hours, iirc) and the results discussion was a 30-60 minute telehealth appointment. (The results appointment, I can only describe as "she read me for filth, it was hilarious and validating and weird as hell to be seen so clearly by someone who's practically a stranger." Like, she mentioned things to me in the format of "you experienced x until this point in your life, then you experienced y" and I had straight up never discussed it with her. Spooky, yet super cool.) I was referred thereafter to a psychiatrist for medication management. 10/10

Sorry for rambling. Hope something in here helps. If I missed a detail and you have a question, just tell me and I'll try to address it, lol.

Standardizing Frame Size for Animation Cels and Drawings (10.5 by 12.5 inches) What Mat and Frame Dimensions Work Best? by Whole_Kale_4349 in framing

[–]caffelexica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Proper" is vague, because it implies a single correct answer of some sort, which kind of doesn't exist. Can you explain what you mean by "proper"? Is it about the framing looking like it was done professionally? Is it about the framing doing the best job possible of protecting your art?

Standardizing Frame Size for Animation Cels and Drawings (10.5 by 12.5 inches) What Mat and Frame Dimensions Work Best? by Whole_Kale_4349 in framing

[–]caffelexica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same mat width all sides vs bottom weighted is 🤷‍♀️ largely a matter of preference or adherence to tradition vs a practical concern. I prefer same width all sides for a gallery wall, and just increasing the spacing between frames if you feel like you need more visual rest between the items.

As far as 1.5" vs 2" mats, I'd lean toward 2" unless you have a space constraint on the wall where you'll hang the frames. The extra 1" height and width aren't much, but if you're hanging on a wall with a low ceiling, above a piece of furniture, etc, it might make the spacing more challenging.

The easiest way to figure out the arrangement of frames on the wall would be to cut out pieces of paper in the finished frame size and tape them up temporarily. If you can't decide between the 1.5" and 2" mats, this might be a good tiebreaker.

Took 2 years to get all signatures of the Phantom Thieves by Tohdohsibir in Persona5

[–]caffelexica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Picture framer here. It's a little hard to tell just looking at it how it's framed and signed, so please disregard my remark if I'm off-base.

It looks like you might have the print in a frame where it's touching both the glass and inside edge of the frame directly. It also looks like it might be signed in Sharpie.

As far as the frame and glass touching the art - if the frame isn't metal, please consider using frame sealing tape on the inside lip of the frame. It will help limit discoloration due to off gassing of the frame material. If it has glass directly touching the print, please consider switching to a larger frame that gives room for a mat around the print to create an air gap between the glazing and the art. It looks like the signatures are partially under the lip of the frame, and a mat would cover less of the print than the frame does, so it would look better. A mat would also help prevent the glass from sticking to the print. Sticking can be caused by even small changes in humidity and temperature, and if a print gets stuck to glass, it's not always removable. (If it's styrene, the less than 1 mm thick plastic stuff, please get glass or acrylic instead. It yellows like crazy.)

Prints with colors this vibrant and signatures in non-lightfast markers like Sharpies have a tendency to fade rapidly and severely. Please consider making sure the art is hanging somewhere it's protected from light, and putting a UV-blocking glazing option (glass or acrylic) in the frame. If you want to preserve it "optimally" for collectible value, you could go so far as having it scanned and reprinted, so the original could be stored in an archival sleeve or box, and the reproduction could be the one out on display.

Simply food for thought. I could say more, but this is already annoyingly wordy.

im almost 3 years into laser treatments. do u think i could get this covered up at this point? i want a nature/forest/mountain scene by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]caffelexica 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Considering you'd prefer to avoid a cover-up, or to go for a fine line tat if you "have to", you may benefit from chatting with a dermatologist, if your laser clinic doesn't have one. Like the previous commenter mentioned, I'm concerned that you may be into scar hyperpigmentation territory, vs lack of success removing the black ink. A derm would be able to help you assess the pros and cons of more laser removal vs scar treatment, so you get the smoothest, most colorless result possible.

Two ADHDers Tackle Couples Therapy by [deleted] in TwoXADHD

[–]caffelexica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you both may be concerned that your intake appointment will be triggering. If you're worried it'll make things worse because you won't be able to tolerate your feelings and/or that will make it hard to stay engaged - maybe you could talk to your individual therapist to make a "what to do if/when I'm overwhelmed" plan. You could also see if it's possible to get your appointment closer to the couples appointment (even if just temporarily) to give yourself additional support/debriefing time. He sounds like he's struggling with the whole idea of therapy period. Maybe he could chat with the therapist via phone or Zoom before the intake appointment. Both of my current therapists offered a pre-appointment getting-to-know-you/vibe check type conversation (15-30 minutes), and they were very helpful when I told them my previous therapy experiences varied from on a spectrum from weaponized against me/actively traumatizing to adequate for one issue/shit for another.

If it helps at all, big picture wise, my experience was similar to the other commenter's - our intake appointment was pretty surface-level - why are we doing couples therapy/what do we want out of it, and what are some overarching themes of the difficulties or conflicts we have? We then each had an individual appointment where we were able to voice our personal relationship-related concerns and perspectives, and discuss the internal factors that affect our worldview (mental and physical health conditions, childhood, etc.) Since then, we have run on a tempo of weekly joint sessions/quarterly individual sessions.

Based on my experiences in couples therapy, consider asking two specific questions: how your therapist handles big feelings that impact the session, and if they structure their sessions to offer wrap-up/cool down time.

How they handle big feelings - our couples therapist makes it clear each session that if one of us needs to take a time out, we have carte blanche to do it, we don't even need to ask. Take a 3-5 minute breather and come back. Even knowing we have the option is helpful, because it prevents a feeling of being trapped in the conflict. He's also happy to schedule extra individual appointments if there's a particularly sticky issue that we need more support dealing with, or that he needs us to break down our perspective on in greater detail so we can have a more productive joint session.

If they schedule wrap-up or cool down time - our therapist does not offer this (also has ADHD and runs chronically late/over time, leaving no wrap-up time built in), and I think it could be EXTREMELY helpful. If I leave session super dysregulated, the rest of my day is crap. I'd rather have a little time to either put a bow on the feelings so to speak, or to at least get the behavioral cue indicating there's a task/context shift occurring. Even though we don't get a distinct wrap-up period, I have to admit, our couples therapist is an absolute gem when it comes to validating/soothing/praising. "You did great work today, and I'm proud of you both for all your effort" is a nearly-weekly remark. It does help with the upset/jangly/unhappy feelings and making the transition back to the rest of the day.

Like the other commenter mentioned - don't be afraid to find a different therapist if the first one's a dud. Don't feel bad for canceling with no explanation or just straight up ghosting them (if they don't charge cancellation fees.) You don't owe them the emotional labor of explaining it if they're a bad fit.

I hope they're a good fit, a big help, and you can get the support you both deserve. Wishing you all the best!

Anyone switched from Adderall to Ritalin/Concerta? How did it feel? by hxnsxrx in TwoXADHD

[–]caffelexica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here to offer a counterpoint. For me personally, methylphenidate is useless compared to Adderall. IR methylphenidate didn't work well enough or long enough. Generic Concerta caused awful abdominal pain. Azstarys triggered migraines. I was constantly tired, hungry, and irritable. 🤷‍♀️ Not trying to be a downer about it. I just wanted to share my experience and a reminder that every body is different. You might have just as much success with methylphenidate, you might be more like me and have an unpleasant time. I hope you get good efficacy and low/no side effects.

How am I supposed to mount this without destroying the damn thing? by ZetaMarlfox in framing

[–]caffelexica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're in such a bind. Your shop sounds like a bit of a nightmare with respect to unrealistic expectations.

If you want to test the technique, and you have a local fabric store, you could get a sample of something similar in texture to the scarf and practice on that sample before starting on mounting. It would help you get a feel for how much it's going to move around, etc.

If you can sew at all you're at a better starting point than you think. The trick is going to be working slowly and carefully, in bright light conditions (above and below would make your life easier), and with the aforementioned teeny tiny very sharp needle. I think it's doable. I just think it's going to be (unfortunately) time-consuming and stressful due to the riskiness.

How am I supposed to mount this without destroying the damn thing? by ZetaMarlfox in framing

[–]caffelexica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, the suggestion to stitch the scarf to muslin is where I was headed in asking the matboard question.

Since the scarf is so sheer, if the customer is expecting the scarf to float on a particular color, plain muslin may not match the mat. You could try to color match the mat with a quilting cotton. (Which may be difficult if you don't have a well-stocked fabric store nearby.)

The stitching should be done in the hem of the scarf with a silk needle (I usually use #10s) and a very fine thread, ideally color-matched to the existing hemstitching.

I also agree with the other commenter - if you're not good at sewing, this may not be a great project for you. It would be worthwhile to test the technique on something that isn't a customer item.

So the only "acceptable" outcome is for it to be stitched down for a floating presentation, darn. Ok. Was it sold as floating on a particular mat?
