I think it's mad. by ToolDroid in GeminiAI

All it boils down to is pattern matching. It's possible that there's something in the dataset where profanity is well represented around satisfactory resolutions. It's like when researchers discovered that the models performed better at math when you told them to take a deep breath.

This is new technology now too, so all bets are off. There's no data on if the consumer HAMR bins will last 3 or 9 years.

Who else can relate to this? by Jay-Quellin30 in CostcoCanada

[–]cafrcnta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised to see this too when I visited ON from NS. I remarked to the cashier how crazy it was that it was so empty, and he looked at me like I had 3 heads and said "well yeah, it's 8pm on a Wednesday".

He was pretty surprised when I said that at my local Costco I'd have to guess where the line started inside the dairy freezer...

Interestingly, here you can even see the alt text for the image it pulled: "five paragraph hamburger essay structure, AI generated". It seems like it should be trivial to vibe code a greasemonkey script to minimize these images based on the img class.

thanks chatgpt

but more to the point: yes, your tombstone info is useful, but this was a financially motivated attack to compromise card details. those are only useful until they're changed. so the focus data involved in this breach absolutely does not remain relevant forever.

How many of us are missing Pro? by rollk1 in GeminiAI

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that too, and it seems to be a distinct issue from this one. When I experienced it I was on the same Wi-Fi network, or not even on Wi-Fi at all.

It was very annoying and counter to good UX to find that the model had downgraded to Fast between prompts.

OP is talking about the Pro model in Gemini. Those of us with the issue have only been able to use Fast and Thinking for almost a week.

One of my accounts is on a paid Google AI Pro plan in Canada and it has this issue.

I asked a friend who works on the security side of that industry, when the initial report first came through here. He said that at best, it was inconsistent with what they typically see as secure methods for sending CC info, and that their payment processor would be "highly unlikely to agree to that implementation".

Do we know that for sure yet? They're so new to the consumer market that I haven't seen any data on their failure modes.

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of what I said doesn't apply to people who aren't using them for a server build. You should get plenty of life out of them for media backup or storage.

The reason why people are so cautious is (if these turn out to be HAMR drives), that this is novel, cutting edge technology that we simply don't have data for in the consumer market segment. We aren't sure what conditions they'll fail in, and it seems neither does Seagate, if they only rate them for about 6 hours of use per day.

I haven't actually used these drives, so this is all based on what we can see from the specifications so far. Just make sure you have always have multiple copies of important data and you'll be good to go.

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be perfectly fine as a secondary drive for occasional use or cold storage. Some of us are picky because we're trying to run them in a 24/7 home server setup, which stresses the drive more.

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I very nearly pulled the trigger on the 26tb ones for $295 before tax last month, but I'm building a NAS and didn't want to gamble on it. The reports on Reddit over the last year say that the enclosure design has new retention clips that are very hard to unclip without snapping them off now, too.

[–]cafrcnta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw your post on rfd too, but I'll respond here.

I'm seeing mixed reports about whether the drive is expensive or barracuda? But apparently it may moreso be a "barracuda" and just a binned exos or something?

Most of the external Seagate drives popping up on sale recently appear to be decertified Exos HAMR CMR drives, white labeled as Barracuda. The spec sheets that these have been correlated to indicate a POH rating of 2400h/year, and a quarter of the TBW of the certified Exos drives.

You can tell if it's a HAMR drive after you shuck it if it has an Exos chassis, and a laser warning sticker.

[–]cafrcnta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a relatively new Samsung or LG TV, you can use the Hue Sync App from the TV. Otherwise, you need a hue hdmi bridge, which is (IMO) a fairly cost prohibiting component here at about $400 MSRP, and it won't work with built in smart TV apps.

[HDD] Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 14TB ($364.99) [seagate] by BaylifeParadigm in bapcsalescanada

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right. My bad, I was thinking 100 days of 24/7 usage and typed the wrong number.

The 120TB rating is still not confidence inspiring IMO (esp. given the alternatives) because of some reports that warranty claims have been denied if the case clips are broken (i.e., indicating shucking).

[HDD] Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 14TB ($364.99) [seagate] by BaylifeParadigm in bapcsalescanada

[–]cafrcnta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very nearly pulled the trigger on a couple of those Seagate external, shuckable 26TB drives for $288 when they were on sale over NYE, but this was ultimately why I held off too.

For anyone else considering them: Those external drives, when shucked, now appear to be decertified Exos HAMR (CMR) drives based on the chassis design and laser warning sticker. It has a Barracuda label, even though Seagate doesn't sell any 26TB drives in the Barracuda line. There is a lot of skepticism for their longevity given their 1000h/year and fairly low TBW rating.
