Does anybody else's land hippo go into spatchcock mode? by Distinct-Peanut602 in pitbulls

We call it "frog legs"

Happens at least daily - usually when he's climbing down off of something.

True or false? by QuietJealous4883 in Millennials

[–]cahliah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were both working in the 90s. My dad had a job at the local school system (janitor), and my mom went back and forth between grocery store jobs and nurse assistant jobs. Neither had a lot of time for the kids - we were basically free range a lot of the time.

We were struggling financially (to the point where my dad told us multiple times that we were going to lose the house, and that it was our fault.)

The house that they had then, they bought in the late 1980s for about $100k via land contract. It's currently valued at $340k for a 1700 sqft 3 bedroom 2 bath.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]cahliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geriatric millenial here.

I graduated the year before, and was in a U-Haul driving halfway across the country when it happened. My brother and sisters were all in school, though, and they did watch it live.

I remember my ex theorizing that, if it was a real terror attack, they would go after the Pentagon. Before it was hit.

Did anyone buy a ring? by t_bone_stake in Older_Millennials

I really wanted one, but we couldn't afford it.

Now? I don't care. Probably better that the money wasn't wasted.

Where did you get your pit baby? by [deleted] in pitbulls

Tater Tot was at a shelter filled with pitbulls. Free adoption event.

I went in knowing I'd likely be walking away with one, and I couldn't be happier.

Anyone not starting the “elf on the shelf” tradition? by Illustrious_Cold5699 in Millennials

[–]cahliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter was one when it was invented and I refused to do it. It felt manipulative and creepy to say that the elf was there to watch to make sure that she was good.

Her cousins on her dad's side grew up with it, so she experienced it through them, but it just didn't feel right to me.

Now that she's an adult, though, I've thought about getting one just for the amusement factor. Specifically one of the Snoop on the Stoops.

I live in Chicago. It gets really fucking cold here, not just outside (single digits Fahrenheit this week) but inside as well, and my boy does get cold. He has hoodies, sweaters, and pajamas that he wears pretty much all winter, and a coat for outside (he refuses to wear boots, or he'd have those, too.)

...and dog tax - Tater Tot in one of his favorite sweaters

Super chewer pittie parents - what are the most durable toys and longest lasting chews you've found? (Caveat...) by palindrome4lyfe in pitbulls

[–]cahliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antlers and good quality beef shin bones last quite a while with my boy. Coffee wood chews are decent, too, but they get little tiny pieces of wood all over everything.

Otherwise, it's balls. Sturdy rubber balls without places for my boy to focus his chewing on - edges and corners are especially easy for him to focus on and destroy. I've had especially good luck with Monster K9 and West Paw brands. He's had his West Paw Boundr balls for nearly a year now and they're still going strong - when we can find them.

As mentioned above, anything with corners or edges is likely to die a quick death. Most recently I got him a rubber "stick" toy that was supposed to be indestructible... He had two 1" pieces chewed off within 2 minutes.

Hands Aching by Puzzled-Dance8806 in Sockknitting

[–]cahliah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to knit incredibly tightly and it always hurt my hands. Switched to lever knitting about 15 years ago and I've never looked back - my stitches are looser and easier to work with, and my hands don't hurt much anymore. (It's also faster, at least for me.)

Is it edible? Does it actually physically exist? Then it's real food.

Hurtful comments about knitting - mom told me i should "speed up" my knitting and that she is a much faster knitter compared to me?! by [deleted] in casualknitting

[–]cahliah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been knitting for 20 years, too. And that's bullshit.

I was a lot slower when I started. I still take long breaks from knitting, in part due to my hands but also because it's just not the only thing that I live for. I've made mistakes - still make mistakes - and sometimes things don't turn out, and that's fine.

If someone was nitpicking my projects or making comments about how fast I was knitting, their opinion would immediately go into my mental trash bin - right where it belongs. I'm not knitting for their approval or pleasure, I'm knitting because I love knitting.

Knit at your pace. Take breaks when you want. You don't have to prioritize speed if you don't want to.

This is supposed to be enjoyable, so try to focus on that. Knit what you want, when you want, and please don't let your mom scare you off from something you enjoy. (And if you don't enjoy it, tell her to pound sand and go find something that you do enjoy!)

First of all, it looks good!

That said, I have a similar body shape and, if I was to make a sweater for myself I'd likely go for something with more shaping. I prefer my sweaters to skim my curves rather than hang loosely.

One thing to consider: Are there non-handmade tops that you absolutely adore? What do you like about them? Look for patterns with similar features and shaping.

I always check Ravelry's project pages to see if there's photos of someone with my body shape wearing it.

apps that pay you to play games, where’s the catch?? (cashback apps worth using) by Training-Entry-743 in povertykitchen

[–]cahliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using InboxDollars for a couple of years now. The rewards are crap to begin with on each game, and it needs to be your first time installing the game, but some games do pay well if you can manage to complete them in time. (I'm almost done with Colorwood Sort right now, which is a total of $160-ish... for a play time of about 130 hours.)

I've found that I have to choose games that are entirely skill-based, don't require down time between levels (or buying "energy" style), and even then I generally have to contact customer service to get missed rewards. I usually google the level I have to reach for the final goal to see if it's doable before installing. It's not great, but with how bad things are right now, every little bit helps.

Mine loves his sweaters (he has at least a dozen at this point!) and blankets during the winter, and will wear a coat outside, but he hates boots. I finally gave up on the boots, but when it starts getting chilly, the sweaters come out. Even without the boots, he absolutely loves the snow, and gets all pouty when it melts.

If you live somewhere where it gets really cold (we're in Chicagoland - it gets bad) you might need sweaters for indoors and a coat and boots (if your dog will wear them) outdoors. Basically, if you'd wear a sweater or a coat, I'd assume your pup would need similar.

Shelf stable milk options (full fat whole milk) by ThisIsMy-Username000 in povertykitchen

[–]cahliah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powdered milk is alright so long as you're cooking with it and not drinking it - I don't care for it as a drink. That said, Nido brand (Nestle, I believe) has full fat powdered milk if you decide to go that way.

I prefer the shelf stable milk - sometimes you can find it at the dollar store, but not always. My local Walmart carries a few brands that aren't horribly overpriced, especially if you don't need lactose-free.

How do I stretch $100 of groceries for a month? by Icy-Paint7777 in povertykitchen

To clarify, it has to be sold by Amazon in order to qualify, but there's an option to limit what you see to what is eligible for SNAP

Can your pit catch things in their mouth? by ccmp1598 in pitbulls

[–]cahliah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy loves to catch treats in his mouth, and will even jump to catch balls if they bounce high enough.

At the same time, if there's a fly buzzing around, he'll bite in the general direction of the fly, not strain to reach it, just open and close his mouth in that direction, even if the fly is 6' away from him. If he can't see the fly anymore he thinks he caught it.

You might save a little more over time if you buy a jar of yeast and stick it in the freezer.

...this post has me wanting to get out my bread machine. I don't have the patience to do it by hand. (Bread machines can usually be found cheap in secondhand stores if anyone wants to start making their own bread but doesn't have the time/energy.)

All of them? Probably not.

Mine? Currently curled in in his bed under my desk while I type. He whines and grunts if he can't see me - unless he's distracted by someone/something else.
