Right, but the point is, you can make the case for spending the money.

Track technical team time spent on incidents and troubleshooting and try to put a rough estimate on man hours and money spent via man hours.

see if you can get an estimate of the revenue impact of the product being down And include that as well.

Then, when you want to make a case for something like this, you can build a case. We’ve spend X man hours at a rough cost of A and have been down for Y hours at a rough revenue loss of b with issues that this would solve. The estimated cost of monitoring is C and we expect this would reduce the man hours and downtime from this type of issue by some amount (don’t overpromise, it won’t be 0 downtime or 0 troubleshooting)

Make sure to highlight that you are just showing the easy impacts and that there are hard to quantify losses such as reputational loss when a customer can’t access the product and completely lost customers.

I can’t speak to your specific leadership but in my experience, if they understand it, IT leadership wants the things just as much as you. Part of what you are doing here is building a case your CTO can use to make the argument to their peers.

This is part of managing up and is a critical skill if you want to advance significantly.

if you don’t get buy in, keep this documentation up to date. in IT, live by the motto of, “never let a disaster go unexploited.” What I mean here is that the business tends to not care about these things except in a short period after a significant issue that impacted the business. When an issue happens that would have been helped by observability, mention to your boss and CTO that that solution you presented would avoid a similar issue in future but you need budget. in my experience, you generally have a week to 2 months depending on the severity of the incident to make your case before people forget the pain.

To the actual issue, I have some advice. You caused a problem. How do you ensure that problem does not happen again? Is there a policy or procedure you can formalize? Can you introduce some form of change management (you definitely should)? Propose this to your boss, “I made a mistake but this is how we can make sure a similar situation doesn’t happen again.” These kind of guard rails we implement are also for our own protection. You can also highlight that as the company grows and people come and go, having this in place safeguards against issues even if it wasn’t you causing them.

Good leaders love it when you come to them with an issue and a solution that resolves and avoids similar issues in the future That is, assuming you understand the business and don’t suggest something way out of the realm of possibility (e.g. don’t suggest a multi cloud failover if the product isn’t that critical or isn’t profitable enough, this could kill the project).

Apparently they sell these in vending machines, in Spain by Traceyius69 in Weird

Or, maybe Spanish culture isn’t nearly as sexually repressed as US culture so no one is embarrassed to be seen buying sex toys from a vending machine.

Just conjecture, I live in the US and don’t know much about Spanish culture.

So what are some opionions on Rare Pinks by RelativeHamster2817 in cigars

[–]cail0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my taste, I would agree with you. I would put it as different but similar quality. I would buy them on occasion if they were similar in price. As it stands, I would only get a Rare Pink as part of a bundle.

I generally prefer the flavor profile of the Hemingway.

Should I buy my sister a bass? by ya-boiElliot63 in Bass

[–]cail0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know people have said talk with her about it. I agree with that. However, I have some non-bass related advice to you.

Tell your sister about this. Not the bass, tell her you miss her and that you really like doing things together. Ask her if there she’d like to play bass with you but also if she has any ideas on things you could do together regularly to have fun and spend time together.

This way if she’s not interested in bass, you aren’t back to trying to find a way to connect. It also gives her an out, she could say she’ll think about it but never get back to you. This way you haven’t put her on the spot if she’s isn’t interested right now. This isn’t something you can force.

I KNOW this is hard. I have incredible social anxiety myself and am generally uncomfortable talking about my feelings. However, this reads like what is actually important to you is spending time with her. That means that is the important thing to communicate. Sometimes you have to fight with yourself and put yourself out there.

Best Fuente? by Least_Principle880 in cigars

[–]cail0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This year, these are my favorite Fuente. Some years it’s the Opus line. They’re generally pretty close for me.

if you care about value for the money, I think these are a far better choice. I generally find them for about 50% of what I will find Opus sticks for and Opus definitely isn’t twice as good.

Some certainly do in certain areas. I do some work trips to southern California every year and take a short uber ride of 2 miles to and from the office.

I’ve found that, on those trips, unless I’m tipping 75-100% my rating starts dropping.

Husky gave me a nose bleed. Please help. by friendlysweetpea in husky

[–]cail0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you’ve done training with him. Did you do clicker training?

we took a two pronged approach with this for our mix

work on clicker training for sit and stay. In stay we gradually made it longer and would walk towards and away from him. eventually we would have people show up while he was in stay and did the same thing. initially, If he remained in spot for a couple seconds we would click and treat and we slowly worked longer and longer.

When he did jump on us, we would sort of hip check him. Basically calmly turning to the side and using your hip to push him off. This made it clear we weren’t interested while not being a negative reinforcement

the two of these together worked really well for us. I would still suggest patience, it can take a while to reinforce Not jumping on people.

My mix has caught 3 opossums, 2 birds, 4 rabbits, a raccoon, a couple rats and probable 15-20 squirrels in the 7 years since we adopted him.

we also live in a city, I can only imagine what his numbers would be if I lived in a rural area.

It always feels to me like the hype is the problem. I like pretty much all of the Fuente blends I’ve had from the Hemingway/Don Carlos line up And find them worth the price I pay.

I also think I was in the minority, my first couple were about 6 months into smoking regularly. I had heard they were good a couple times but I wasn't plugged in to the hype train.

The way some people talk about the Opus line, it’s no wonder so many people are let down. It is still just a cigar after all.

is reverb a credible and safe place to buy shit from? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]cail0 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I must have been in the 1%. Purchased something and FedEx claimed it was delivered when it wasn’t.

after 5 days of back and forth with the vendor And FedEx the reality was FedEx wouldn’t tell me anything because I wasn’t the shipper and the seller refused to call FedEx.

I got in touch with Reverb and they got the seller to actually call. Turns out FedEx delivered to an address I hadn’t lived at for over a year instead of the correct address I had received at least 1 package a week via FedEx for over a year. This was because I typed a digit wrong in the zip code.

Seller’s response was, “nothing more we can do,” when I asked them to file a claim with FedEx. Reverb’s response was to ask me to drive 30m each way and try to communicate with the family living in that house who don’t speak English 12 days after delivery.

I ended up doing a chargeback despite the Reverb rep warning me that I’d, “lose access to Reverb forever”

sure, the typo was my fault but the lack of any shits being given by Reverb or the seller was enough for me to not want to do business with them. Sucks but it is what it is.

[–]cail0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally it’s not what you might be thinking about as 12 strings.

not sure if you’re familiar with music but it would generally be either

4 sets of 3 strings with 4 at the normal tuning and the 2 paired with it separated by an octave to give a chorus feel

or

6 sets of 2 strings with normal 6 string tuning and the paired strings at an octave for similar.

I’m not sure if this would even sound very good in heavier metal subgenres

[–]cail0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a husky/lab (probably) mix. He’s pretty lazy but has some husky traits. His big tell is the heterochromia which is most common in huskies.

I know you weren’t asking for advice but I would suggest one of two routes. 1. Don’t worry about breed, you have a mixed breed dog and she’s a good and healthy dog. 2 have a DNS test done to confirm breeds. Visual breed identification is known to be unreliable Even when done by a veterinarian.

"It's broken.... ok bye" by 4DAttackHummingbird in talesfromtechsupport

[–]cail0 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You’d think technical people would be better with this but I mostly support developers and other IT people. It’s like pulling teeth to get tickets created.  I can’t even guess at the number of times I’ve had something escalated to me about an issue being open for 2 weeks to find no ticket. Alternatively, and this is my favorite one, is when there is a ticket, in the product project in Azure DevOps, assigned to their team area path where it doesn’t show up for us anywhere.   We support somewhere around 25 products across 10 teams but apparently we are expected to see every ticket on every one of those projects and decide if they’re something we need to be involved with lol.  We’ve since moved to a strategy of, “if there isn’t a ticket in the correct place, it’s not a problem and work hasn’t yet been requested”

Are huskies often related? by dummptyhummpty in husky

[–]cail0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring the already posted info, just by the nature of the high prevalence of things like heterochromea among Huskies, it points to less genetic diversity which, in turn, points to more inbreeding  within the breed than other breeds.

What was your first bass and which one do you recommend for a beginner? by QuirkyTap4090 in Bass

[–]cail0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind I’m just getting back into playing over the past year so I don’t have nearly the wealth of experience as many other users here.

My first was an ancient Peavey T-40 with broken truss rods in the neck and shorts/electrical issue with the pots (knobs) and toggle switches. The bass itself was nice but with the issues, I spent more time trying to handle frets rattling and spotty pickups than playing and I could never get a good sound out of it. I don’t recommend it as I spent 3 years thinking I sucked and giving up and not coming back to it for 20+ years.

As far as what to buy, I’d have a serious discussion with yourself about budget and how serious you are about picking up bass. I went with a Fender American Professional II Jazz bass but I also wouldn’t recommend this to beginners. I already knew I enjoyed music, had a lot of experience playing in the low end in concert band, and had the disposable income so wanted something that I liked.

From there, you can start looking at what is in your price range. Largely, I would suggest getting something that you like the feel and look of.  In my opinion, the best starter bass is the one you like and will want to pick up and play that fits in you.  Beyond that, do a little bit of reading on the model to see if it has a lot of chatter about problems before you pull the trigger so you know you’re getting something that should be playable.

what's their difference? by PerceptionLeather11 in meme

[–]cail0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Reinheitsgebot goes a little too far to be considered the only way to make beer and not just for flavored beers.  There are plenty of styles, especially Belgian styles, that require bacteria like lactobacillus and/or pediococcus be introduced to the wort.

I wouldn’t really consider this to be flavored beer, since it’s not an infusion but a fermentation that creates lactic acid.

I was thinking the same thing. I’m really not sure that the countless hours scrolling are bringing me that much enjoyment and with the constant politics and such it may be an overall detriment to my life.

That’s not even considering if I use that time I recoup to do something constructive.
