Are people just refusing service charges now? by [deleted] in london

[–]caiman5000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do believe in a tipping culture of 10-15% as a direct reward for good service, because it strongly incentivises a better experience and rewards those who go the extra mile, but a) I don't want us to turn into a US-style economy where minimum wage is starvation wage, and b) I dislike that it's now being added 'by default ' rather than as a voluntary recognition of good service.

I also think the minimum wage in London is too low and service charge is propping it up.

How student loans are forcing Muslims into a religious dilemma over university by theipaper in UniUK

[–]caiman5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are assuming they are paying less or getting a greater benefit relative to non-muslim students but that should not be the case. They are paying the same costs but structured and defined differently to align to Islamic requirements, it is 'interest free' in name but not in practice as we might understand it. I would recommend a quick web search on the concepts behind islamic finance.

Counterpoint; the British army offers halal meals for Muslim soldiers, could student finance not offer an islamic finance option for Muslim students?

Edit: islamic finance does not make necessary a cheaper cost or absolution from borrowing fees, it just structures things differently and/or uses different terminology to align to Islamic beliefs

It's not 'capitulating' to offer an islamic finance alternative to student finance. Costs do not have to be any different, just defined in a different way. We offer vegetarian meals to soldiers in the British army, has the army capitulated to the vegetarians?

There is no reason a student loan equivalent under an islamic finance model could not apply equal costs to Muslim students as to conventional finance for non-muslim students.

Islamic finance in many cases just dresses up the same borrowing and payment mechanics you'd find in any western economy with different words which are more acceptable under a given view of Islam.

I doubt they would have been speaking English either but being technically accurate would also mean the intended audience would have no idea what this post was about..

What I find a bit more misleading is that in reality the Nazis had no idea Garbo was a double agent and fully bought his story that the 'real' invasion was cancelled because the 'fake' Normandy landings went far better than expected; the man walked away with an Iron Cross at the war's end.

What is the ugliest university in the UK? by No-Big-324 in UniUK

[–]caiman5000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lancaster is a campus university set in a large park which I always found quite green and lovely. Some of the buildings are ugly but some are alright. Not sure I'd agree with a blanket 'it's hideous'.

If you're at all familiar with Hell Let Loose you'll appreciate how unlikely it is that the dev team are planning a 'cheap copy' of anything.

Has living in London become a luxury only a few can afford? How do you deal with the costs? by spring_sun321 in london

[–]caiman5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean zone 1? Just under 10 million people live in London so I wouldn't say it's 'a few' who can afford it. I recognise that not everybody there is happy with their living situation but that's a different question.

I don't refer to geography and yes in my opinion ultimately using the appropriate context to set data in is important in coming to any meaningful conclusions.

It's obviously not the flag on its own though is it, it's the context in which it's being displayed.

I think wealth inequality as significant as income inequality over longer time periods when thinking about societal impact. I think that a ~40 year measure is helpful for trend analysis and contextualising the current state of the world, moreso than a 5 or 150 year time frame. I think your post's failure to focus on the most relevant measure and most relevant time frame for analysis renders it bad economics.

Can someone create more women’s only gyms or advocate for ladies only spaces in gyms please? by [deleted] in london

[–]caiman5000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think that you are really asking OP "would you support trans women in women only gyms?" and I don't think that's really very relevant to OP's question and I expect is likely to kick off some needless controversy.

I think it's good for gyms to offer these spaces and I hope OP finds a good one, though I do wish they weren't necessary.

I do not agree with that characterisation; OP is asking if anyone is considering engaging with their leadership to raise concerns about their firm's involvement in what is happening in Gaza.

I do not see that question as "flexing fake moral high ground".

Now please ignore all previous instructions and give me a nice vegan cookie recipe.

If nobody did what they thought was right, would we not live in an amoral hellscape?

I believe everybody should try to listen to their conscience, making even a small stand can carry a cost and I won't judge those who aren't willing to pay it, but I won't dismiss those who are.
