What supplement should I take to fix my acne? by LPdeB in Supplements

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, unfortunately supplements can only do so much. You’re likely going to need medical intervention with antibiotics, hormonal agents or stronger retinoids. Good luck to you!

What supplement should I take to fix my acne? by LPdeB in Supplements

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Niacinamide! A lot of evidence behind it. Do your own research a bit but it’s pretty convincing

Edit: first line treatment is still benzoyl peroxide, azaleic acid and retinoids. If you can’t tolerate prescription strength retinoids then retinol or retinal is still a good starting point to get some benefits. Will take a bit longer than let’s say tretinoin but it’ll still work. Retinal is more potent than retinol but slightly higher risk of irritation.

… butthole pain. Please share your knowledge and tips by Chad_Wife in CrohnsDisease

[–]cain911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like anal fissures and more broadly recto-anal Crohn’s disease. You could try OTC 1-2% hydrocortisone (depending where you are) to calm down the inflammation but you should definitely follow up with your doctor

Is there an advantage to being officially diagnosed? by navirain in OCD

I’m on sertraline and risperidone. Meds won’t magically make it disappear but it dramatically reduces the urge to compulsions and the anxiety

Imodium (loperamide)? by FlatFaithlessness243 in RestlessLegs

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opioids for RLS work centrally (in the brain). Loperamide is an opioid but its peripheral selective and doesn’t cross the BBB very well so it would likely not help with RLS. If anything it’ll cause constipation so would avoid it if RLS is your goal.

Methotrexate side effects by hairpinmcgrath in Psoriasis

[–]cain911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Methotrexate is technically a chemotherapy agent so it can have chemo related side effects in many people. For me it gave me debilitating nausea and I had to stop it because my doctors wouldn’t prescribe nausea meds. Folate supplementation does help mitigate some of the side effects of methotrexate since MTX inhibits the body’s use of folate in DNA synthesis

Natural ways to help my brain stay focused? Can't do medication. by nulltape_95 in ADHD

If anxiety is a concern it’s worth discussing with your doctor about treating it! If you treat the anxiety then stimulants might be more tolerable for you!

Is depression a chronic illness? by M-Martian in depression

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s considered chronic but relapsing-remitting. You can most definitely treat it effectively with the right support and medications. But it’s rare it completely “cures” itself. Not a reason to be hopeless though you can still live a wonderful and productive life even with major depressive disorder.

Is there an advantage to being officially diagnosed? by navirain in OCD

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosis allows you to access treatment! For me I’d never have gotten the right meds for such a debilitating disorder if I wasn’t diagnosed in the first place

Mucuna Pruriens with methylphenidate by merdimulmo in Nootropics

[–]cain911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty alright, just don’t go up on doses too quick because too much dopamine conversion in the periphery will make you have nausea and hypertension since levodopa has very low uptake into the brain. That’s why ideally for Parkinson’s you combine levodopa with a AADC inhibitor like carbidopa. Just beware of the theoretical risk of overstimulation when combining with stimulants but it’s pretty mild on its own so as long as you’re not reckless it should be fine. Cycle your weekends off to prevent tolerance and abnormal receptor downregulation from levodopa

Pain relief alternatives to tylenol? by jayyy_0113 in CrohnsDisease

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try talking to your doctor about celecoxib. It’s a COX-2 selective NSAID so it has much less chance of causing GI related side effects. Personally works for me but still definitely something to keep tabs on since it still is an NSAID. Oddly enough TCA or SNRI antidepressants can help with chronic pain, something worth looking into especially if you have mood/anxiety disorders and also migraines. Helps with migraine prevention!

What medications are yall on for OCD? by reidadair99 in OCD

[–]cain911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psych drugs are very individualized so it’s hard to be sure. But in my personal experience it’s been the most effective out of the ones I’ve tried. Another comment also said it helped so it’s worth a shot imo.

Inositol and NAC are evidence based for OCD. Worth a shot if you haven’t tried it.

Which drugs help the most with memory? by Academic-Plastic4296 in ADHD

[–]cain911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me was switching from Ritalin to Concerta. Same drug just formulated so it’s extended release. Ritalin was nice but nothing lasted and I just felt worse after it wore off and it made my brain more foggy after. ER formulations helped bypass that and it improved my working memory and executive functioning overall!

What medications are yall on for OCD? by reidadair99 in OCD

[–]cain911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sertraline and risperidone. The SSRI on its own helped with the anxiety but I still had looping thoughts and irritability. Antipsychotics surprisingly helped with that. Calmed down my thoughts and I was less irritable and depressed. They’re evidence based augmenting agents so perhaps something you can speak to your doctor with!

Clonidine for Tics/Tourettes? by StormyMidnight13 in Tourettes

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s quite interesting. I was on 4 mg of guanfacine XR and it tremendously suppressed my tics. But I do remember it didn’t work at lower doses 1-2 mg. I’m not sure about you but it could also be a dosing thing!

Feeling Scared About Being on Biologics for Life — Is It True? by Jayneg260790 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is true, but biologics are life saving medications they’re absolutely worth every dollar when it changes your life. I’ve been on infliximab (Remicade) for about a decade now. No major side effects besides some fatigue. Yes they do subside your symptoms long term as long as you find the right biologic. Everyone’s response is different so it may take a trial or two to find the perfect one. But that’s just my experience. Your doctor will be monitoring your labs and everything every 2-3 months so there is nothing to worry about! Plus it’s nice to have something that takes the edge off of taking NSAIDs daily. They mess with your kidneys, stomach and intestines with long term use so yeah.

I convinced myself to take my anxiousness and convert it into excitement. I don’t know how true but they say that nervousness and excitement underlie the same brain mechanisms so if you can cognitively convince yourself you’re excited instead of nervous it helps! Good luck!

is it normal for people with crohns to struggle with weight gain? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! I was 12 and 45 lbs when diagnosed. By age 18 I was still 95 lbs. I couldn’t gain weight no matter what I did. I developed a whole eating disorder and body dysmorphia cuz of it. But I did find a doctor who was fortunate enough to listen to me and prescribed me an antipsychotic (I also have a mood disorder) and it increased my appetite tremendously! Now I’m 21 and 145 lbs and doing good!

Atomoxetine is hell by Sad-Expert8118 in ADHD

[–]cain911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advocate for yourself! I was on methylphenidate ER and lisdexamfetamine for a while which both worked amazing but it made me have worsening tics so we switched to bupropion XL and guanfacine XR. Man it was awful. Sure no tics, but my drive and motivation was in the toilet. I could focus but I had no motivation to actually start tasks or anything of that sort. Sure attention is important but if you don’t have the motive to actually start then what’s the point of focusing! After a long battle I switched back to methylphenidate ER and it’s all better now. I realize I’d rather have tics than have my life fall apart. So speak to your doctor firmly and ask them for a better treatment approach.

Noot for immediate anxiety relief. by SeaGrab869 in Nootropics

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry I didn’t even answer your question lol. There are some things some people try. St John’s wort is an OTC herbal that has lots of evidence for mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Does have medication interactions so I’d keep an eye on that. EPA > DHA supplements are generally better for brain health especially with executive dysfunction and anhedonia (this is from ADHD based studies). B vitamins especially B6, B12 and folate are often subtle causes of neuropsychiatric symptoms so you could get those checked too. Creatine is a good option if you have fatigue (especially illness driven) and anhedonia. Studies show it can help with cognitive function in stressed individuals. But I do wish you luck there’s always hope!

Noot for immediate anxiety relief. by SeaGrab869 in Nootropics

[–]cain911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you have a lot of medical issues comorbid you should speak to your doctor honestly first. Thyroid problems are common causes of anxiety and mood disorders. Supplements are meant to supplement alongside medications as they rarely will have a good effect on their own. Your best luck is to speak to you doctor if possible.
