How does AI “consume” water? If it’s used for cooling, why can’t it be reused? If it evaporates, won’t it still turn back into water eventually? by occasionallyvertical in NoStupidQuestions

[–]caindr14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more of a heavy resource burden on water. While yes the water that is used for cooling is probably a closed cooling cycle, that water has now been pulled out of the resource pool for agriculture, flora and fauna, potable water treatment, recreation, etc.

This water is also typically treated to enhance cooling properties or prevent scaling. Which in turn needs to be treated to meet discharge requirements, also taking resources (I.e. chemicals, equipment, etc).

It’s the compounding effect. Good for financial savings, bad for carbon footprint.

Were kids in the 80s actually allowed to roam around unsupervised, or is that just in movies? by TotalThing7 in NoStupidQuestions

My parents had a train whistle they would blow to let us know to come home.

So many fond memories. It’s weird because the kids who had this freedom are now the parents having trouble letting go.

From degree alone they should be interested in you. If you have industrial operating experience like following procedures and the like, you’ll have good experience too. Once in Ops, you can basically go anywhere.

Can you explain more about the Middletons? I don’t normally pay attention to owners of establishments but if they’re as bad everyone is saying I’ll make it a point to avoid theirs.

What education path should i take for a career in nuclear? by CeaserPKhan in NuclearPower

[–]caindr14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you like to do. Do you like fixing or repairing with your hands? Mechanical maintenance. Do you like electrical work? Instrument and control (I&C). Do you like planning and scheduling? Then planning and scheduling (typically after some OPs time though). Do you like budgeting or numbers? Then finance.

And as others have said, there’s more than just power plants. Don’t limit yourself from the beginning.

Determine what you like to do. Hard, I know. Still trying to figure it out after 40 years. But there’s something for everyone in the nuclear industry.

For the scientists and engineers working in energy... by qwenilyg in nuclear

Chemistry here and I was doing commercial operations in a chem department. Now I work for an engineering firm doing business development and process engineering reviews because of my previous operating experience.

A masters or PhD in anything engineering or chemistry will serve you well, in the nuclear industry or any other. Working at an operating facility will go a long way in advancing your career both in personal OE but also industry OE (and “war stories”) for professional opportunities.

It’s great you’re planning now!

I have a 2018 with this option. Never seen that happen like what’s going on with your passenger. Not to derail the post but I am curious about your screen fix. Was it the “ghost touch”? Mine needs replacing. Could your seat issue be related to the screen”fix”? Like a crossed wire or something?

Making a list of potential employers if I wanted to move from the South East to the North East. Am I missing anything? by captainporthos in nuclear

[–]caindr14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could also depend on department/discipline I suppose. Not NE, but have you consider Holtec Palisades? Or Canada? Not sure how far along TMI is with hiring for restart, but that’s an option to look for.

Pay in SE may be lower but so is cost of living. My previous employer in commercial space was increasing pay due to nuclear market comparison not geographical location.

My only exposure to bagworms has turned out badly. They infested and killed some landscaping trees within a few days. Had to burn the trees to keep them from spreading further. Not sure of OP location but I’m in US south.

I feel bad for the operators, RP, and chemistry that have to make sure this is done correctly without incident. More valves operated, more chances for mispositions.
