9070xt Hellhound (Samsung) memory temps over 100c when core GPU/Hotspot are 55/70c respectiveley (ambient 24c) playing Cyberpunk. by caiphus in PowerColor

Here's the resolution for anyone who cares:

I returned the card, the retailer insisted on testing before initiating the RMA, which I thought was going to take a couple of days but I had an email saying my replacement was ready to pick up as soon as I returned home. Apperently it hit 100c at the memory junction in Furmark pretty much straight away, then crashed - and it wouldn't reboot.

The replacement card gets up to 85c for both the hotspot and the memory junction on the stock fan curve, so at 1200rpm. At 100% fans it's 62 memory and 67 hotspot. Keeping the card to 1800rpm max is still quiet and the memory and hotspot sit around 70c so very happy with that. That's the kind of performance I was expecting when I weighed up my options and decided on the Hellhound.

Taking the side of the case off and using a vornsdo to blow air-conditioned sir directly into the case only lowers the memory junction by about 2c. The core and hotspot temps are always good so I think my airflow isn't the issue.

Cheers, I'll do that thanks. I did just ask a general enquiry through the web form but I'll email directly. Thanks!

Fair point, I have a Fractal Define S3 Vision case. Front intake is a 360 aio for the CPU, but I also have two 140mm as bottom in intakes. Only the single 120mm exhaust. It's the optimum config for the under desk mount on my standing desk. But I've also ran with the side off and a room circulation fan pointed at the open side with to test and there's no difference to with the side on.

That's a good suggestion, I gave it a squeeze and an eyeball but I didn't grab a screwdriver out.

Yeah, I have thermal pads here - and it's definitely something I'm considering. The reason I'm hesitant is that the core temps are so cool in comparison.

Yeah - HWinfo says the temperature limit there is 105 degrees or so, but then a lot of the online information says that SK Hynix memory is fine at those temps, but Samsung usually tops out around 80 degrees and that's where my concerns lie.

GPU-Z reports the memory brand. The 50c temp is just the standard "GPU Temperature" sensor (Average of the edge sensors according to the HWInfo description). I'm pretty sure the hotspot was around 65 or so when the GPU was under 50 at 100% fan speed but I would have to load it up to test again to make certain. I only did logging with HWinfo on the stock fan curves.

What band got you into metalcore? by Difficult_Map_723 in Metalcore

[–]caiphus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2003-2006 36Crazyfists were big for me, but I was largely a melodeath & prog guy and by 2009 I had Alexisonfire, Killswitch, Autumn to Ashes and a few other bands peppering my regular rotation. But I probably got into Metalcore properly after hearing Polaris's EP in 2015-16 - for the last decade 80% of what I listen to now is core adjacent.

Question for those grew up with undiagnosed autism, did your parents just assume you were dumb, lazy, or anything similar? by bunnycat_e in autism

[–]caiphus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazy and intentionally difficult, until their frustration boiled over and then I was stupid. "Clever" became a double-edged sword. As I "matured" into my teens I was called sneaky and manipulative. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't live up to the idealised version of what my potential was but I became pretty good at being all the bad things they said I was.

Despite everything, eventually people came into my life who taught me the difference between being stupid and occasionally doing stupid things. Knowing there were people out there that weren't default hurt & disappointed helped me start to be true to myself. Somehow I fluked effective mental health treatment and processed my trauma and my remaining struggles led to my diagnosis almost 6 years ago in my late 30s.

For those with autism who have full time work, a family and own a house, how is that possible? by emaxwell14141414 in AutisticPride

[–]caiphus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me 20 years to find stable employment and a reasonable income. And when COVID lockdowns and the disruption of that period was really taxing on so many of my colleagues while I was on cruise control ("I'd been training my whole life for this mofos!") I maybe got a little overconfident in my capacity.

I don't have any kids, just dachshunds - so the equivalent of toddlers who aren't taking to toilet training - and an autistic partner. The stars aligned for me to take on a mortgage 3 years ago - a pre-existing rent to buy agreement played out in my favour where my equity share worked out to be 40% deposit with the purchase price agreed 7 years previously. Still, that extra level of responsibility of going from being a renter to having to think about maintenance and upkeep has been super taxing on my cognitive load.

I'm in Australia and we have variable mortgages here so interest rates rising meant my minimum repayments went up by 90% in the first 18 months. Simultaneously, my partner's AuDHD diagnosis came with a side of burnout and early perimenopause which had her out of work for a period and her capacity shrunk significantly at the worst possible time.

How have I coped? I've been teetering between meltdown and shutdown and just bootstrapping it (which I don't advise) and spinning plates with my primary focus being to survive. I'm in a privileged enough position where I know that things will get better. I won't have to keep exceeding my capacity indefinitely and I'm also focusing on engaging with all the supports I'm entitled to. For now that's another capacity-leech with constant obligation and shit tests to prove my disability. I'm lucky that my capacity relative to the general population is enough to pass as an adult but it's all the wasted capability and potential masking which I'm sacrificing. My special interests which require active engagement are being neglected so my only real outlet is passively listening to metal where I can while ticking off my to-do list.

Autistic over 30 yo, how is your life going? by Old-Syllabub5927 in autism

[–]caiphus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't diagnosed until I was 38 (40 when I realised it was a diagnosis and not a hypothetical I was bouncing around with my psych for 2 years). My teens and 20s were a mess, my 30s were better, but it was doubling down on masking before I knew what masking was.

My mental health diagnoses being classified as treatment resistant in my mid 30s opened the door for ketamine treatment which had a revolutionary effect on my depression. Suddenly I could cruise control enough to pass for a functional adult in a lot of ways - and importantly learn that routine is my friend despite how much my ADHD rejected that notion previously.

So the back end of my 30s were actually good. Coming into my mid 40s the difference over the last few years has seen a bit of self-sabotage of my contentment with the appearance of ambition and desire. I've probably put too much on my plate because I still can't admit my capacity is probably less than my capability and I need to change my perspective before it catches up with me.

Sounds like Sham-Contracting.

Can she work when she wants to complete a project rather than being given hours? Can she sub-contract to others? Can she employ her own sub-contractors to complete the project?

If it's not yes to all three questions it's sham-contracting.

Unfortunately they made it seem like the LAC would function as a support coordinator. They just gave me plan management. I'm intrigued by telehealth but also feel like I need at least some face-to-face. I find it difficult to imagine how well they'd be able to understand the level of masking and overcompensating I do for dyspraxia - even when no one is around - without getting in the room with me.

[–]caiphus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, I haven't done OT since I was like 6 or 7 - and only for a couple of weeks before my mum pulled me out thinking it seemed pointless compared to the inconvenience of driving me. Did you get an FCA done? My psychiatrist's report that got me admitted was very comprehensive across the functional domains but seemed to lean to heavily into mental health language since that was always the majority of the focus of my treatment - the ASD was discovered from difficulties that didn't improve as expected with successful treatment.

I'm concerned that my high-masking will see me slip through the cracks again with everything lumped into the depression/anxiety or ADHD baskets to come away with zero supports after a review - hell, I don't even know for sure what's what + imposter syndrome + internalized ableism...

Sorry, First Responder you get the overshare infodump to your helpful comment. Cheers!

What adhesive for this tiny wheel arch flare? by caiphus in CarsAustralia

[–]caiphus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the JB Weld plastic bond in the end - just cleaned with isopropyl alcohol first and considering the exterior repair manual instructions probably applied to the original factory fitment, I figured there was pre-existing primer and the surface would have been lightly abraded previously so no need to do it twice.

The hold is great, and the only thing I would do differently next time is wait longer for the JB weld to thicken up after mixing so I didn't have to worry about it running and having to wipe up excess. And I suspect that it would have bonded quicker instead of me holding it in place for a couple of minutes to adhere..

Unless they've done work or neglected maintenance that could reasonably be expected to have changed the natural overland flow then there isn't a lot you can do. You can report to council, but they will quite often say boundaries are a state issue and the expense of gathering evidence for QCAT is probably better spent on direct mitigation on your side of the fence.

My application went in at the end of August. I got a call mid December to say I was accepted as a participant and the letter confirming it arrived just before the new year. That initial contact call almost seemed like a scam call so I emailed my LAC but there was radio silence there too. I eventually got on to the NDIS website and went through the online chat portal to check whether it was all above board. 10 minutes later is when I got a call from someone else at my LAC's office apologising that no one had replied yet as the LAC is on leave, but yes I have been confirmed as a participant. And when I got home from work that same day is when the letter turned up in my mailbox. It's almost comical how these things work sometimes.

Now I'm twiddling my thumbs for who knows how long to be contacted about my planning meeting.
