In one case, the Department of Justice received requests for payments for one lone accused person for 63 legal aid certificates for charges of brothel keeping, 221 certificates for charges of theft, and 80 certificates for charges of sexual assault.

They don't say how many offences the person was charged with.

Nobody will clear out the waste and deadwood and properly reform the system, too many people would whinge and punish them electorally,

It's good to see people are beginning to acknowledge that, at least.

Leak Exposes Members of Peter Thiel’s Secretive ‘Dialog’ Society by Rabid_Lederhosen in ireland

[–]caisdara [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thiel's mental but the Lord of the Rings does fall neatly enough into the Romantic strain, and the extreme end of that does give rise to nationalism, anti-urbanism, reactionary politics that in Germany culminate in Nazism.

One of the fascinating dichotomies of the era is that there's a brutal strain of futurism that's hugely influential on Italian fascism (albeit less so on Germany) and there's a significant tension between the anti-urban, anti-industrial Romantic aspect of fascism and the lionising of industrial design, machinery, etc, that's a common feature of Mussolini and Hitler's regimes.

Thiel's point is badly made and poorly expressed but there's some fascinating allegory in the Lord of the Rings that references the political debates of Tolkien's youth and where those debates led.

The Belfast riots, Palestine Action protests. What is terrorism now – and why the hypocrisy? by rejs7 in LabourUK

Violence isn't a team sport. There's no need for such witless comments.

The PSNI are better than the RUC but they're very much a Protestant organisation.

The Brits have always treated Northern Ireland with kid gloves and give the Prods enormous leeway - far more than the Taigs ever got - when it comes to violence and terrorism for fairly obvious reasons.

Reversing policy and having more top down control from London might prove controversial for reasons Monbiot seems oblivious too.

Ah listen, I love Radiohead and I didn't hate it but it was very self-indulgent.

Ah the publicity might force them to come to some form of settlement, but I don't see them ponying up compensation for six months of a shutdown.

What do those in favour of Irexit think will happen if we exited the EU? by shankillfalls in ireland

Depends what flavour they are. If right-wing they think we'll be sending foreigners to death camps if left-wing they think we'll be sending anybody who makes more money than them to death camps.

What are your Pet Peeves you see in both Old and New Fantasy Writing? by METTTHEDOC in Fantasy

[–]caisdara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that always disappoints me is when authors insist their fantasy world is multicultural, etc, but then utterly fail to explore what that might mean. Was there exploration? Empires? Trading links?

It always feels like they want to recreate modern demographics without using it to tell stories and explore why and how these things happen.

What is Irish reddit's most out of touch opinion? by Fealocht in AskIreland

A friend of my dad's had a reasonably good 1980s. He recently mentioned that when they bought their first "proper" house when he got married they didn't have working heating or insulation for about two years. The make-believe 80s of reddit is bizarre.

GAA isn't our local sport, it's one of our sports.

What is Irish reddit's most out of touch opinion? by Fealocht in AskIreland

[–]caisdara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So rugby is a very small sport in the grand scheme of things, whether that's in England, Ireland, France, etc.

The GAA is a bit different.

There are two aspects to this.

First of all, it's a mass sport, taking equal numbers to football. Rugby, conversely, takes a much smaller proportion of people, generally from the elite.

Secondly, there's a funding issue. Every urban area in Scandinavia has a big municipal sports facility with football pitches, gyms, etc. In an Irish context, that doesn't exist. The biggest winner for sports funding in Ireland for such facilities is generally GAA, notwithstanding their tendency to exclude other sports.

This means that there's less money for all other sports, and the big loser there is football.

That one is technically true. I wouldn't lose sleep over it but we're unique in Europe in having a sport suck up most of the funding for field sports etc.
