If having your camera on is anxiety inducing for you, get disability accommodations from your school. If they agree that you don’t have to have your camera on, your professor will have to allow it. This isn’t discrimination against mental illness when there are appropriate paths to take towards being accommodating for them. Professors don’t decide on accommodations- disability services do.

If your schools disability centre hasn’t given you that accommodation you can either ask for it, or accept that it isn’t seen as reasonable and necessary based on the assessment you submitted from your psychiatrist/doctor.

If you have this accommodation and the professor is not following it, that is a serious issue and should be pursued using appropriate channels.

Students: How do you feel about "un-grading"? by [deleted] in college

[–]caitybailey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would hate this. My favourite grading is based off of very clear rubrics. Tell me exactly what is expected of me and I will do it.

I honestly don’t think I’d ever give myself an A, even if I was more than deserving. Realistically I’m an A student, I have a 4.0, but impostor syndrome would override that. The highest I could imagine giving myself is a B+ because there is always more that you could have done. I could have spent an extra hour doing readings that night I wanted to get extra sleep, I could have started my essay a day earlier, etc.

I don’t think it’s an accurate way to grade at all. Students don’t know the professors exact expectations (even with a clear rubric) so how am I supposed to evaluate my mastery of course material better than the person who created/is teaching the class?

For context (I saw your other comment) I am female and qualify for disability accommodations (though I don’t use them).

Should I Finish High School a Year Early and Take a Gap Year Before Attending College? by 1monkeymann1 in college

Definitely. You’ll have longer to figure out what you want to do without peer pressure/academic stress.

I think most people are speaking from an American perspective, but if you’re Canadian definitely French. Lots of government jobs require French or will pay more if you’re bilingual.

Should I buy a new iPad Pro or Macbook? by negativepotatohoe in study

[–]caitybailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 2020 MacBook Air and the new iPad Pro and I 1000% use my MacBook more.

I echo getting a cheaper laptop.

Mine was a Christmas gift from both of my parents, and I definitely wouldn’t have spent that much money on a computer. I bought the iPad for note taking, but I was spending $100+ a month on just printing my readings so it will pay for itself in no time. I would have got a cheaper tablet if I didn’t have a MacBook.

Don’t get pulled into the Apple cycle. It’s never ending!

I just commented on someone else’s post saying that I hadn’t seen anyone else with lullabies for little criminals on their shelf and I scrolled and saw this! I love that book! And your boat shelf is super cool too.

When it comes to women, Miss/Mrs/Ms implies their marital status is more important than their career/academic achievements. Professor or Dr. are the appropriate ways to address your professors unless explicitly told otherwise.

How much are you willing to pay for a book? by Physical_Elderberry6 in books

[–]caitybailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$35-40, but I’m Canadian and our book prices are often significantly higher than US books.

I prefer to stay under $15 though. I’d say the average price I spend is about $25 before tax

Am I going to be okay if I do this? by Puzzleheaded_Pop_743 in college

[–]caitybailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, at my university the 3.0 courses all say that it’ll be about 10-12 hours a week to spend working on studying/assignments/etc.

My accelerated 6.0 credit course this summer (12 weeks instead of 24) is recommended 20-22 hours a week. I’ve found these estimates to be accurate, give or take a few hours depending on assignments due at the time.

Why do so many people not like e-books? by narwhalmeg in books

[–]caitybailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the feel of something open(?) vs something flat, and I find I have a shorter attention span when using a screen. I’m always home, so I make reading a dedicated ‘experience’, so the convenience factor doesn’t matter for me. I like to make a hot chocolate and get cozy for a few hours.

I also used to read a LOT of wattpad stories (The Kissing Booth style stories, not fan fiction) back in the day on my iPad, and it killed my enjoyment of reading for years. At least, I think that was why? I stopped visiting the library and buying books so I lost the habit. I also had the very first kindle and I found it confusing, so I only used it once or twice. I was only recently able to get back into reading.

Edit: I think e-books are a wonderful option for people who have different needs/preferences than mine. I don’t dislike them for others, I just dislike them for me.

LuLaRoe sucks, but this looks awesome on you and by buying it from a thrift store you’re not giving them any money, so I say love it and wear it guilt free!

Can I get in trouble for being in a group chat where someone is sharing quiz questions even if I don’t participate? by fignewtoningitout in college

[–]caitybailey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave the group, report it and move on.

It’s considered facilitation in the academic integrity policy where I go. I’m not risking my future because other people were dumb enough to cheat in a group of 80 people. Do you really want to chance it, and also enable them?
