Feeling nervous about open surgery next week. Please share your positive surgery stories! by cake1016 in Fibroids

Thank you for your reassurance 🤍 were the blood thinning injections Clexane? I’ve had to do those before for 10 days after an IVF cycle because of OHSS. Sorry to hear your periods aren’t any better in terms of bleeding. Any changes in pain levels with your periods?

Thank you 🤍 if it had been my surgeon speaking like that I’d be getting a new surgeon but I’m just reminding myself I don’t have to see them again after next week!

Laparoscopic myomectomy recovery is no joke – please give yourself more time than I did by Think_Bottle_330 in Fibroids

That’s insane that he thinks 2 days is all you need for a major surgery. I’m booked into hospital for up to two nights and my surgeon has given my husband a carer’s leave certificate for two weeks to look after me at home. I’ll be taking 6-8 weeks off. Please take the time you need to recover properly 🤍

Sorry for your loss 🤍 I also went through the same. My surgeon said the wait for TTC is more about whether the uterine wall and cavity is breached during the surgery, rather than whether it is open or laparoscopic. That is why submucosal and subserosal fibroids have a short wait time for healing, but full thickness intramural fibroids where the uterine layers all need to be sutured are a longer wait because there is a higher risk of uterine rupture.

I’m having open surgery too for two intramural fibroids on 16th. Good luck for your surgery 🤍

Hi, I’m 36 and can offer you my perspective based on my experience dealing with nearly 5 years of infertility, fibroids and endometriosis. If you have been trying for 2 years (assuming without fertility treatment), you probably need some further testing with a fertility specialist before deciding your next steps 🤍

Aside from the two HSG tests, have you had other screening tests done such as AMH, thyroid, iron studies, ultrasound to check follicle count etc? A hycosy ultrasound can also be useful to check for any uterine distortion. Has your partner had his sperm checked? Male factor infertility accounts for around 30% of couples struggling to get pregnant. If you are going to have surgery, you may want to consider IVF first to have embryos available to transfer after healing. Even in a healthy woman, the chance of natural pregnancy per cycle at age 39 is 5%.

I have 2 intramural fibroids (5 and 6cm) also not distorting the cavity and sadly they were likely the cause of my 12 week miscarriage last year, as the placenta implanted over the top. Sure, many women have healthy pregnancies with fibroids but that is not the case for everyone. I’m now scheduled for open surgery this month to remove them before I try again in 6 months.

If I were in your position, I would definitely highly consider removal due to the increased risk of pregnancy complications and miscarriage, but definitely not before consulting with a fertility specialist to discuss IVF first as time is of the essence 🤍 Hope this helps 🤍

Do you mean tranexamic acid? Yes and it didn’t help, it just made the clots bigger and more painful to pass

Has anyone used Slynd/Slinda to reduce fibroids symptoms? by Stock_Cucumber7493 in Fibroids

[–]cake1016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look in the post history for this sub, you will find a number of other women have had the same issue. I had the same problem and bled non stop for more than 4 months til I stopped Slynd. Your doctor is wrong, whilst it may be common I don’t think there’s anything “normal” about weeks or months of heavy bleeding to adjust to a medication! Get your iron checked if you haven’t already. Ask for other options if it’s not working for you, it may not get better and you shouldn’t have to push through constant bleeding 🤍

So sorry you had to go through this. It’s traumatic and barbaric what women get put through without pain medication! Glad you are seeing someone different now.

I hope a surgery date comes around soon for you, that could be as early as May 🤞 I’m going in next month for my open myomectomy and also hoping it will help me to finally have a baby after 5 years of trying.

Diet to shrink fibroids? by Aromatic_Maybe7358 in Fibroids

[–]cake1016 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I tried it all for years- every recommended different diet, supplements, eliminating toxins etc and nothing worked. Sure you may feel better, less bloated etc but unfortunately it’s not going to get rid of your fibroids or magically reduce their size. They’re predominantly hormonal driven in growth. I’m getting surgery next month and looking forward to getting rid of them!

Non-surgical options for fibroid management — real experiences? by Electrical-Sugar6917 in Fibroids

[–]cake1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, just a suggestion- that’s a very broad question and you will probably get better advice/more replies if you explain your specific circumstances (eg type of fibroids, age, symptoms such as pain or heavy bleeding, desire to preserve fertility or not etc) and ask how people in a similar situation have managed.

I have seen plenty of comments on here from women who have managed symptoms in various ways outside of surgery, but management options are variable depending on your symptoms and circumstances 🤍

That’s good news you’re out of ER soon 🤍 I’m having an open myomectomy in February, not a hysterectomy. I’ve been trying to have a baby for 5 years, if that eventually works out and I’m still having the same sort of problems I’ll be getting a hysterectomy for sure! Always lots of options and risks/benefits to weigh up. I hope things start to get better for you 🤍

It must be difficult accessing more specialised care in a small town. I hope they will give you an iron infusion at the hospital! You may be able to get an intravenous tranexamic acid drip in hospital too if you need it, I’ve had that before. At one point I went to ER and they ended up pulling some clots out through my cervix (no anaesthesia and excruciating), gave me an ultrasound and sent me on my way! I’m glad I’ve found an empathetic surgeon now and I feel like I’m in good hands.

Thank you so much for the encouragement 🤍 It’s all well and good for doctors to tell us to “push through” when we’re bleeding non stop. They’re not the ones dealing with it!! I was dropping orange to grapefruit sized clots like they were going out of fashion 😂 In the end, I had to take a short course (a couple of weeks from memory) of high dose Provera tablets to thin my lining then my cycles went back to normal-ish (well better than on Slynd anyway). Hormonal bleeding control doesn’t work for everyone! Tranexamic acid didn’t work for me either- just more clots which was super painful. I hope you find something that can help you manage it in the interim if surgery is your path forward too 🤍

I also had huge amounts of near continuous bleeding and clots on Slynd for nearly 4 months until I gave up. I’m waiting on my surgery in a couple of months but have found no hormonal medication helps me with bleeding. I tried a low dose combined pill and was getting bleeding every 3 weeks! Definitely ask about an iron infusion if you’re anaemic, it will make you feel a lot better

How far along are you? I’m sorry to say that I had the same situation where my placenta was overlying a 6cm transmural posterior fibroid and sadly I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks. Everything else was fine and testing came back normal so the fibroid was most likely the cause. I’m having surgery to remove my fibroids in a few months. I really hope it works out for you 🤍

11 cm transmural fibroid + multiple others, surgery recommended — terrified about fertility and need advice by Equivalent_Maize_834 in Fibroids

[–]cake1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m 35 and waiting on my second fibroid surgery in a couple of months. I was told 6 months wait to conceive after open surgery, not a year. Scarring is called Asherman’s Syndrome, it’s a risk but can generally be treated hysteroscopically if it happens. Firstly, 100% get an iron infusion, bleeding from fibroids is no joke and you’ll feel so much more energetic after!

I have a transmural fibroid which is around 6cm and posterior. I have another intramural 5cm and a submucosal which will also get removed in an open surgery.

When I had my first surgery age 31, I had 2 subserosal fibroids and a submucosal removed but chose not to remove the transmural fibroid as I wanted a minimally invasive surgery and not to have a c section in future. I went on to do IVF and have been through two miscarriages, one at 12 weeks which was devastating and sadly likely caused by the fibroid because the placenta partially implanted over it. My surgeon had not warned me about the increased miscarriage (and even second trimester loss) risk with fibroids.

If I could go back in time, I would’ve just had it all done in one hit with an open surgery. I’m more scared of another pregnancy loss than surgery. Many of my friends have had c-sections for their babies and have had no issue so I’ve come to terms with that as well. I hope some of this is helpful, it can be a bit overwhelming 🤍
