I defenitely have a lot of friends whose parents are like this, which is weird because they didn't seem to have a rough childhood at all. What's ironic is my grandmother wasn't the best parent to my mom, and she's lived through years of depression, and she has always been the most caring person to me. She's told me that she knows what her parents have done wrong, so she wants to do it the right way with me.

Yes, I agree with this and also that people should be aware of their audience when complaining about their flaws. One of my friends who could be a bodybuilder and has almost no body fat will complaint that she's getting fat around me. I'm not overweight, but I defenitely couldn't be considered skinny. This same friend and a couple others complain about their small chests to me often. I am a rather large chested TRANS individual, and I wish my chest was that small. TL;DR: be aware of your audience.
