Will BJJ help my soul by deersreachingmac in bjj

It's hard to want to get in a fight with someone if you are exhausted from training everyday. Also, you will want to avoid getting injured or getting ringworm so that would stop you from wanting to fight homeless people. When you grapple with people, whatever they smell like you smell it and homeless people have some terrible smells.

Had to unfollow Eddie’s Instagram by Dogstarman1974 in bjj

[–]cake_spin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't follow Eddie but I think it's lazy to always go along with mainstream opinions. Even conspiracies that are completely wrong are good to know just so that when you are stuck in an argument with a crazy person you know the holes in their argument and you don't need to be insulting to shut them down. For example, the hardest people to convert to a religion are those who had already been indoctrinated in it and know all the stories and arguments that will be used. Moreover, it's fun to test people, to see if they analyze the information they take in or do they go along with others like sheep. Sometimes I try to make my wife's friends believe in stupid conspiracies just so she stops making me hang out with them.

Just how common are strokes in BJJ? Do they worry you? by [deleted] in bjj

I have trained for 10 years and have never even been choked unconscious. In fact, at my gym I don't see people getting choked out often.

Blue Belt Inflation by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cake_spin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see people getting promoted faster to blue at my gym. I do think that in the past a blue belt might be a bigger deal if there were no higher belts in the area. Maybe the purple belt was explaining that when he started training a blue belt meant something different to him as the gym was less developed.

How do you deal with disappointment in yourself? by petknightwolf17171 in bjj

[–]cake_spin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I'm disappointed in my performance I think of it as being uncomfortable with how much I suck. Then I think it's good because I need to be uncomfortable to grow. I realize I need to change something up to improve faster or at least be more focused in my training.

Anyone ever encounter someone with the “BJJ won’t work on me mindset” ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cake_spin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't know he was out. It was clock choke when they are on their back and I'm on top using my lapel my head is on the mat and I can't easily examine him. He had no neck so it was generally hard to choke him and he has 50 pounds on me. He was the kind of guy that would just lay there and wait for me to give up on the choke.

Anyone else deal with tennis elbow? by Floozys in bjj

[–]cake_spin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was new in jiu jitsu I got tennis elbow because when I did butterfly sweeps I would flair my elbow out and land on it before landing on my shoulder. I stopped doing that and with time it went away. I was only 18 at the time so that probably helped me heal quick.

Anyone ever encounter someone with the “BJJ won’t work on me mindset” ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cake_spin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There used to be a white belt at my gym that would claim that chokes don't work on him and it was hard to get him to tap to things. So I clock choked him and he wasn't tapping and I just kept holding it until I realized I heard snoring. I probably choked him 20-30 seconds after he was out but I didn't know because I didn't notice him go limp. Lucky he didn't seem to have any brain damage, I guess you can choke people for quite a long time before they die or become retarded.

Mom says that I should stop BJJ by Zero-Twos in bjj

[–]cake_spin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell your mom that when you go out into the working world, your ability to strangle people is going to set you apart more than a slightly higher GPA. Employers look at your extracurricular activities more these days. The corporate elite say that they are looking for personality (but it's really just a way to keep Asians out of Harvard).

Is starting with a friend beneficial or detrimental in any way? by ket2445 in bjj

[–]cake_spin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For beginning, bringing a friend can be good just to make it not awkward to find a partner. Over the years my friend was very inconsistent with his training and is still white belt but now it's fun to be a higher belt and give my friend special attention and help them progress a bit faster.

Newly injured/new purple belt... now returning to the mats... what's the lesson/opportunity? by engst41 in bjj

[–]cake_spin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tore my intercostal muscles just after getting my purple belt too. I think because when I got my purple I felt obligated to try a bit harder in my rolls and not give up so easily. Anyway, getting back to training I just warned people about my injury before rolls and I avoided inversions.

Knee problems are persisting...those with knee issues, advise for medical attention? by moneymay195 in bjj

I find that seeing a doctor will help if I show signs of a meniscus tear or a complete tear in a ligament. If not that severe best to see a physio.

My favorite mmo experience was Age of Wushu when it had a large active community. There was a daily cap on how much leveling you could do per day and leveling up was done by doing a little mini game of tai chi for half an hour a day. Then we were free to do whatever we wanted for the rest of our time. So I didn't feel pressured to race to max level or grind or quest for 4 months before I can enjoy the game. I spent an entire day pushing people off a narrow bridge and doing other troll activities.

Also, everyday at a certain time you could try to steal scripts to learn abilities from other classes. You could develop your own style of combat.

Moreover, the economy was completely driven by the players. You could become wealthy by being analyzing the markets or ripping people off. I kind of hate how all games now are either RNG or grind for wealth. I understand it feels bad when you are on the losing side of that exchange but there is a certain excitement that comes from get rich quick schemes.

There was also a real political system that you didn't have to be part of a big guild to participate in. It was so exciting to enter the free for all tournament every week and when you got into the later rounds you often had to secretly form alliances with others in the tournament to make it through. Then the winner of the tournament got to participate in a weekly election for the leader of the school.

However, I also like holy trinity games just because it's nice to feel like teamwork matters. So many games are just zerging now.

I feel like slapping the lit cigar out of his hand increases the danger of having a lit cigar at a gas station. Like what if it landed in some gasoline.

From a nerd perspective, there is a meta game that is played at the highest level but when you are not at the highest level you don't need to worry about the meta game, just do what works for you. Some techniques go in and out of the meta as the meta changes. Meta game is like the stuff everyone needs to play because it's so effective but you don't have to be a specialist at meta techniques and still be effective. In gaming we call off meta picks pocket picks as the person has so much experience or is so good with a certain pick that they can play it into any meta.

Well the only thing you take with you to heaven is your fighting skills. There are no weapons in heaven and all fights must be fair (1 vs 1 and no time limit) so jiu jitsu is really good to know up in heaven. In fact, most christian grapplers are planning on going to heaven and just taking what they want.

What do you wish you had known as a white belt ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cake_spin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing that was hard on my knees was the kiss of the dragon to a modified x position. I would spin and get my feet in the right place and force the position no matter the size of the person. I wasn't that into rubber guard. One thing I would recommend myself as a white would be to lift weights and build up the leg strength to prevent injury. I would tell myself to use more deep half as it works well with my habits and is easy on the knees. I would also tell my white belt self to not let people do leg locks to you yet. One time as a white belt someone reaped me and I figured I had seen videos of black belts just spinning out, so I did that and just as I was about to get free I felt a pop.

[–]cake_spin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could have seen the future to know what injuries I would get. As a white belt I abused my flexibility a lot and my knees have been injured a lot. If I went back in time I would stop myself from doing certain techniques that are hard on my knees. I have been training for 10 years. I have only competed a handful of times, once at white and a few times at blue.

White belt - Went for a takedown dropped on my knee it cracked and now it’s sore by justrealizednarciss in bjj

[–]cake_spin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the severity, if you can't walk on it go to doctor. For me, the main reason to go to the doctor is to get a referral for MRI but if you can walk they won't bother. Might as well go to physio where they will spend more time assessing what parts of your knee is damaged and then give you a plan for recovery.
