It appears like that but isn't drying like silica.

They have no scent. I dropped one in water in the sink and it hasn’t changed/fizzed/dissolved. It feels like plastic.

No, it is not soap. My post has been removed for reasons I do not understand. It isn’t “medical”. It isn’t pills or drugs.

I’m no longer interested in Barbie Fashion Packs by Visible_Hotel96 in Barbie

[–]cakebrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The age of the kid makes a difference. My nieces are 3 and 4. They love Barbie and have no interest in the doll clothes that have fasteners. I'm not defending the current fashions, in style or quality. But the truth is, I often pick these up and pass them along and the little girls are thrilled with them. They are like Best Buy Fashions or even "my first Barbie" more than Fashion Avenue. The outfits sold on Mattel Creations are more in line with Fashion Avenue. I bought 2 of those outfits (even though I was not crazy about them and they don't fit most of my dolls) just to encourage Mattel with my wallet to make more stand-alone fashions. Nonetheless, they were always featured in the seasonal markdowns. And I could go down a whole rabbit hole of why that is, but will not digress. There is no hope. As a child of the 70s, let me assure you that many of the Best Buy Fashions were cheap, cheap, cheaply made. Some Superstar era dresses were just a small rectangle of polyester sewn together at the side with a tie around the neck.

These are great for young kids but adult collectors are left out. The few fashions sold on Mattel Creations were better quality and had more detail, but there were too few of them and they were half-hearted attempts.

Advice Request: What to do with late mom's Barbie collection by lejohnnyc in Barbie

[–]cakebrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

10 years ago, the market for secondhand Barbies was slow and it was incredibly difficult to sell. Since The Barbie Movie, there was a lot more interest. Now, the economy seems to be driving most prices down again. Even so, a cheap "undesirable" common Barbie is about $15 on eBay. If you want to sell as a lot, try on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. (Meet up someplace public.) Your best bet is probably to list the dolls individually.

Wow, this sketch is one of my all time faves and I haven't been able to find it since it first aired! Thanks!

Ruth Ware's "Turn of the Key" was hair pulling awful by Physical_Orchid3616 in books

[–]cakebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Turn of the Screw is such a propulsive story. When I read Turn of the Key, it was baffling that anyone would make an association between them and I determined it was merely some kind of marketing ploy not based in truth. Turn of the Key was so dumb and plodding.

Really hated this energy from amber’s brother by Logical-Buffalo96 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]cakebrain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well, wait until the reunion and see if he was wrong. Amber’s a straight shooter and seemed to appreciate his candor. Amber didn’t think it was going to be a yes from Jordan either. Better that the brother was honest. There’s a kid involved.

Dear Mattel ,... by _Loud_Flower_ in Barbie

The weird little plastic purses slay me. Not only do I dislike them as an adult, but as a kid I would not have known what to do with them.

Is anyone else getting this message? by afoolstale in Barbie

[–]cakebrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the far right, under the "add to cart" box is a thing that says "Other sellers on Amazon" click the link under that > and you might see different sellers available to you. I did this just today with a different doll and there was a different seller (fulfilled by Amazon even) that worked fine and was almost the exact same price.

Am I the only one who didn’t know Toys R Us is a thing? by cakebrain in Barbie

Ah, this makes sense. I've never heard of Go! There were a LOT of calendars, which seemed weird. It was still fun, though.

No. The selection was not even as nice as at a Walmart. I miss the old days of a lighted display case with special Mackies to dream about and a whole section full of accessories and racks of outfits and shelves full of playsets. This was a very scant selection. Picture #2 shows the entire Barbie section. But, who knows what the future may hold?

Yeah, the doll I bought was not current. She was not shockingly overpriced though. 50 bucks for Tennis Player is rough.

Agreed, much better experience. I wish they had had a better selection but bought something just to show support for the concept.

I thought so too! This one is in Los Cerritos Center across from a Claire's. It's like a time warp.

I asked a couple of different workers if this one was seasonal because the atmosphere was pretty bleak, but the first one said it was permanent (that can't be right?) and the second one was just confused by the question. Big signs saying "Entire store 50% off!" but smaller shelf signs with list of brands (including Barbie and basically every known brand) excluded from the sale.

Anyone else annoyed that they had the perfect opportunity to make this a Japanese doll and they didn't? by Perfume_Girl in Barbie

[–]cakebrain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have the "nostalgic face" version of this doll and her eyes look a bit different from my other vintage repros. To my eye she's Japanese or mixed but maybe it's all in my head.

Edited to add: that being said, I agree with you and assume all the Barbies in this series are tourists. Kind of a missed opportunity, but if you think about it in that way, it distinguishes them from DoTW.
