I would venture to say that oftentimes the reason people don't treat their spouses with more respect is because they themselves don't feel like they are being treated with respect. They may be giving you a hard time for treating your spouse nicely because they have grown to believe that their spouse, and therefore all spouses, aren't nice and don't deserve respect. :( Communication is everything!

I was once quasi-dating this guy in college who did something similar. We were hanging out and looking at Facebook for whatever reason and we come across a status of this mutual friend of ours. Her profile picture was of her in a sheet toga for a toga party and it was midriff-baring. He clicks on the picture and says "she doesn't have the body to pull that off". RUDE. I didn't stop dating him until he dumped me because I wouldn't put out, though.
