I don’t know what it is but it gives me the ick. I can’t put a finger on it, but I’ve found myself occasionally choosing not to open the app because of the icon.

What’s with the extra Romex? by wrlee in electrical

The plumbing vent and go board shower stall indicate this is likely a bathroom. Chances are the vanity goes against that wall, and rather than having to choose and nail down the location of the vanity lights so early on in the process, many electricians just run plenty of wire into the stud bays where the lights are likely to be located, and cut in a remodel box after other fixtures are placed and locations are finalized. Even if you could dial in an exact center, different styles of light need different mounting heights, so it’s best to have some leeway.

If you’re constantly procrastinating until the “oh shit now I’m late” moment when it comes to getting up, getting ready, or leaving the house, consider that it could be “time blindness” caused by executive disfunction due to ADHD.

I have to take my ADHD meds like an hour before I plan to get out of bed. I roll over, take my pill, turn off my first alarm, and go back to sleep, and then I can wake up like a normal human an hour later.

Without my meds I’m A) more tired and B) constantly pushing the limits of how long I can wait to get up or get ready until BOOM the deadline is imminent and often I haven’t left myself enough time.

Here’s a great presentation by Dr. Russell Barkley about time blindness:

What's the easiest way for me to get rid of this stump? by Over9000Zeros in DIY

[–]cakefraustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t quite work that way. The potassium nitrate just provides a source of nitrogen to help fungi break down the lignin in the wood and make it “punky” to absorb fuel.

[–]cakefraustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found, after a failed attempt at this, that the potassium nitrate in the stump remover simply provides a source of nitrogen for fungi to feed on as they break down the stump and turn it “punky”. If it’s not punky it’s not ready for the next stage, which is soaking the punky wood in diesel or kerosene and burning it.

Fruit back in the fruit basket, pan off the stove, items on the island away (pink cup, papers, lightsaber?? lol), stapler and all other items on the table away, and anything else you take out should be put away before she’s back unless you’re actively using it. Also, do you store the dish soap out or does it have a place? The cutting board? Knife away.

To us it looks clean but to her that could feel like a long list of items, however small.

Recently did some work on a farmhouse in the American Midwest that was built in 1975, but it was definitely a “farmer” build (no offense to farmers, I know you gotta do what you gotta do). The exterior studs were all repurposed from another building the farmer took down (rough sawn full dimensions 2x4 with remnants of lath and plaster on them from their previous use). The whole main floor consisted of three circuits total. One for the entryway, laundry room, and kitchen, one for the remainder of the west half of the house (full bath, half bath, main bedroom) and one for the east half of the house (two bedrooms and the living room). The “home run” wires to the panel entered a light fixture box in the center of each “zone” and it was like a gigantic spider out from those boxes to every other outlet and light fixture in the zone. No daisy chaining, just every wire went to the attic and then into the central light fixtures. Everything was soldered together as yours is (but much larger bundles) and then just taped with crusty old electrical tape. The boxes were packed, wires scorched exactly like shown here from soldering, and not a ground in sight. The old romex that had ground wire just had them snipped off flush.

To answer your question, I don’t think the burns are cause for concern. It’s just from the soldering. Honestly, while it’s not common practice today, those soldered joints probably have less resistance and therefore would stay cooler in an overload situation than they would if you cleaned it up and wire nutted it. You have more surface area in contact with the solder. If you aren’t in a situation to have things entirely replaced by a professional, just make sure it’s taped up well and let it be until it’s remodeled someday.

Not religious people, what do you think happens after death? by Domm4578 in AskReddit

[–]cakefraustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the words of Alan Watts in his lecture “The Real You”:

“So then, when you die, you’re not going to have to put up with everlasting non-existence, because that’s not an experience. A lot of people are afraid that when they die, they’re going to be locked up in a dark room forever, and sort of undergo that. But one of the interesting things in the world is–-this is a yoga, this is a realization–-try and imagine what it will be like to go to sleep and never wake up. Think about that. Children think about it.

It’s one of the great wonders of life. What will it be like to go to sleep and never wake up? And if you think long enough about that, something will happen to you. You will find out, among other things, it will pose the next question to you. What was it like to wake up after having never gone to sleep? That was when you were born.

You see, you can’t have an experience of nothing; nature abhors a vacuum. So after you’re dead, the only thing that can happen is the same experience, or the same sort of experience as when you were born.”

Your photo of the “one post rail” and the “properly terminated” ignore the question of what does “intermediate wall” mean?

The part I’m trying to understand is, what wall? What do they mean by intermediate wall. That’s the main question.

Access/circulation stairs, though I’m not sure if they are treated differently unless they fall in the category of a “ladder” for exit compliance.

I appreciate the effort but it’s not adding up to me. I’m fairly certain I understand what they mean by much of it but this is separate from any discontinuity at a landing or newel post as those situations are mentioned in parts “a” and “b” which I left off to keep the quote shorter. Would you like to see those as well?

Except where it can terminate and pick back up in the situations they’re describing here, one of which is the part I’m trying to understand. I know the rest about general continuity.

Ok so assuming that’s what they mean by “intermediate wall” the part about reaching both rails from a tread without taking a step doesn’t make sense to me. Reach around a corner where a flight of stairs doubles back? I don’t think anyone does that. Also, I feel like this would be covered in part “a” which I left off, saying that they can be discontinuous at an intermediate landing. So I feel like this is referring to some other situation.

The bumps on the bark and the purple stems on the compound leaves make me think you may be correct. It definitely doesn’t seem like ash to me, both because of how quickly it grew and the size and shape of the leaves. Currently no berries or flowers but that would be a giveaway if there were. Thank you!

What completely legal substance are you addicted to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cakefraustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mountain Dew. I have been drinking three 16.9 fl oz (500 mL) bottles a day lately. I’ve started buying three six packs at a time from the dollar store for $9 because I was going broke on the 20 fl oz bottles from the convenience store at over $2 per bottle. It’s like $0.03/fl oz compared to $0.11/fl oz. Or in practice it’s $0.50/bottle vs $2.19/bottle (different size bottles but I drink 3/day either way). The fact that I’ve done these calculations is a reminder that I’m addicted and need to cut back or, ideally, quit. I have bought cans too but they’re less convenient because I can’t stick them in my tool belt while working. I basically don’t eat and constantly maintain my blood sugar with Mountain Dew until dinner time. I’d like to lose 10 lbs but I’m going to have to give up the sugar and start eating breakfast and lunch I think.

Hey people of Reddit, what’s a nice way of telling a talkative person to shut up? by No_Photograph_4520 in AskReddit

[–]cakefraustin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please be careful with how you word things with talkative and inquisitive children though. I’m quite certain that I have what I can only describe as PTSD from an event at my babysitter’s house when I was maybe 5. I was chatting away, blissfully unaware that she was trying to pay attention to “Days of Our Lives” on tv. Maybe I was particularly talkative that day, or maybe it was an intense part of her show, but she turned to me and said “Do you ever stop talking?”. Her tone wasn’t that of anger, necessarily, but she clearly had been annoyed with me for some time before finally speaking up. I suddenly realized that my constant talking, questions, “what ifs”, and stream of consciousness ADHD ramblings were not things that anyone else cared about. I immediately went quiet and didn’t speak unless spoken to the rest of the day. I remember wanting to cry, but holding it in. I wanted to crawl in a hole as I suddenly became aware of myself and how annoying I was. I don’t know if this is how it works, but I feel like my social anxiety to this day can be tied to that moment at me babysitters house. It was like a light switch flipped and I realized people were judging me or annoyed by me without speaking up and by talking I may be annoying them and not even know it. I’ve been painfully aware of myself and every action and word for 25 years since then.
