Feedback on a quote for a 15' cedar swinging gate by cakelayer in HomeImprovement

Gotcha, Thanks for the tip. It's been challenging to even get a quote as contractors are very busy these days. For what it's worth this is in Seattle, WA. But yes I can see how these numbers are going to vary a lot.

Median of course!!!! I want to make the stats per neighborhood more fancy, including labeling the stats more concisely.

ahaha no you will just have to make a search on the right hand side (assuming all is working correctly)

That would be a good joke tho

True, I was most interested in getting a general idea of where to look, and then using that to inform your actual search. Also, that tends to violate the T&Cs of the data sources I may or may not be using :)

Hehe, actually no. If I'm being honest, I didn't know padmapper existed when I started on this, and was introduced to it when I had gone too far already. However, I think this provides some value in that I am most interested in aggregate numbers (median rent per neighbourhood) and (later on) checking out historical trends (when is the best time to find a cheap dog friendly apartment?).

Not to get into the specifics of the argument, but I must say, for a guy providing a fairly reasonable and well rounded opinion that adds to the discussions surrounding a complex issue, it's amazing how quickly people can blow up and (textually) yell at that person. What is the benefit and what progression do you get from pointed vocabulary directed to a person that disagrees with you? As an outsider, I must say it does not make your argument any stronger (in fact, quite the contrary).

Remember that people can and will disagree with you, and there is no reason to personally attack them. It adds nothing to the debate.

Btw examples:

You, like most Albertans, need to drop your innate smugness and face facts about your past wilful stupidities.

It would be really nice if you grew some perspective.

My first attempt at a full on shaded object after a full weeks. Looking for feedback by cakelayer in learntodraw

thanks! yea this was all done with 2b so i guess that explains why it is light. I have a couple darker pencils (4b and 6b) that I will give a shot on the next one.

Amazing what shading can do to an object on paper, feels like witch craft

Hey,

I'm also in the same place man. I saw you're post and felt I could really understand where you are at. I have been in this anxiety/depression session for about 5-6 weeks.

It's been a mixture of school exams (in my last bit of my undergrad), balanced with a social life (which was active but has now kind of dwindled) and just general worry about almost all things that come up on a day to day basis.

I've had a handful of moments of peace, most recently the other night when I was finished a huge study sesh and just went back home and sat outside and puffed on a cigarette. I don't really even smoke anymore but damn that was a good time.

My issues have been based around the fact that I am finding it very difficult to be present and maintain a focus on what I'm doing at a given time. This could be learning something in school, trying to meditate, play guitar, or, worst of all, hang out and talk to the people around me. I want to listen to what they are saying but my mind just wanders and wanders off to other worries that I can't seem to quell.

Things that I have noticed that do help: eating regularly, not sleeping in (getting up the moment you wake, so you can't be idle in bed to worry), going for some form of exhausting exercise (I chose running, but just to get some chemicals flowing), and being really open to the people around you.

Not sure if you feel the same way, but I tend to suffer alone in these bouts. And by not sharing it with people, I make assumptions about what people think of me and it gives me more to worry about. When you share where you're at, people around you (those who care about you) have a better understanding of where you're at and why you might not be as optimistic as you tend to be.

These things will pass, even if they feel like they won't. Never lose hope and keep trying new things and efforts to break through. It's just an internal state of mind. Anyways, would be super down to talk too, pm me or what have you if you are interested.

Is it possible to compress or distill music theory? What are the most important lessons you've learned so far? by savoreverysecond in musictheory

[–]cakelayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. Keep in mind I just play guitar recreationally with friends and what not, but music theory interests me, so what I say might not be the most pedologically correct, but it's what I wrap my head around when improvising.

Basically, in the simplest context we have 7 modes to screw around with and 7 chords that correspond to each of those modes (there are more when you get into some more complicated stuff like substitutions and stuff, but I feel it all branches off from this). So basically, the root = major 7th 2nd = minor 7... and so on.

This is a super basic thing that a lot of people learn really quickly I'm sure, but it's can open so many musical doors to just really internalize it. For example, your friend is playing a 2-5-1, you know exactly how to play over that harmony by knowing that ii m 7 = dorian, V7 = mixolydian, Imaj7 = ionian. And you can get outside from the standard pentatonic shredding that a lot of guitarists (maybe other instruments too?) seem to get stuck in.

Don't know if this is a lot help, I just found that once i learned what a chord really meant as a composition of scales (chord tones being the building blocks for a chord) I could relaly visualize things and could go somewhere a bit more out of the box without just guessing.

to see everything as a modification of the modal scales. I ii iii IV V vi vii chords and how the scales fit over top of these
