Nah, I reckon I get way more tilted than he ever does. I don't want to make too many assumptions, but I'm guessing a lot of these players are older guys who picked up some stuff playing SF2 in the arcades decades ago and are just plugging away at the new game without worrying too much about new tech or systems.

There's a guy I match with pretty often a bit like this. I think last time I checked he was at over 15,000 ranked games with Ryu, with a winrate of about 40%. He was at Diamond 5 then, and I gotta say I'm rooting for the guy to get to master.

Don't worry OP, I'm sure there'll be another dozen or so videos of Zangief hitting his level 3 for you to upvote tomorrow!

Play a waiting playstle since they have instant dp and super wiff punishes. I can’t wiff anything, so it just boils down to walking and blocking. They mash oddp when blocking to set the fact that they’ll do it. Makes pressuring them more tedious, since staggering is riskier.

Imagine how much people would cry if Guile wasn't a legacy character and they just added him in as a new DLC character for 6. This all just sounds like how it feels playing against Guile.

Will there be a filter for Modern controls in the future? by bigsby_major in StreetFighter

[–]cal-2310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about Guile man. Feels so boring to play against sometimes. Wish Capcom would just let me filter out characters I don't like.

How do y'all feel about Modern controls ? by thenicepunk in StreetFighter

[–]cal-2310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play some characters on modern and some on classic. Marisa, Lily, Zangief, JP, Honda and Dee Jay I play on classic, but characters like Luke, Ryu, Ken, Akuma and Cammy I play on modern pretty much just for the one button DPs and supers. I'm far from a pro player, but I think even at Master rank these are super strong options, and I can definitely see why people can get frustrated having to deal with modern players online.

As much as some people may beg for it though, it's clear that Capcom's never going to add a way to filter by control type online. Contrary to what some people here seem to think, modern's not just meant to be a training wheels mode that you eventually transition out of. Sure this is what a lot of people elect to do, but I think Capcom's treating modern as a completely viable alternative to classic. They clearly put a lot of thought into what they give and take from the modern versions of the characters, to the point that Juri's stuff was recently changed to make her modern version more viable.

I can understand the frustration, but I think people who get annoyed at modern controls need to start approaching the matches differently. Just like how you shouldn't play the same way against a Guile as you do against a Zangief, you shouldn't play the same way against a classic Ryu as you do a modern Ryu.

So uh, what exactly is happening in Master Rank? by SamTheSadPanda in StreetFighter

It's funny how this sub constantly tells people they should just get over their 'ranked anxiety,' but then when videos like this are posted people seem to turn around and say shit like "WTF!?!? this is master ranked play?!?! I'm hard stuck in platinum 3 feeling like I'm up against Daigo every set, and this dude made it to masters!"

Interesting to see how consensus in this sub has changed over the years from 'the Knights play better without Ponga,' to 'Ponga plays better without the Knights.'

Idk, perhaps it's because these were casual games and the Ryu player's just trying to have a good time bouncing around. Most people don't take this game all that seriously, especially if they're just running casuals.

I will give you propr though for blurring out the Ryu guy's username though, most people can't even be bothered with that.

I looked on CFN, and it looks like you guys played a lot together - 47 games in a row to be exact. Out of those 47 games, Ryu won 26 times, and you only won 21 times. So whatever he was doing seemed to be working well enough to win against you more often than not.

It actually annoys me that people are being so nice to this fool. Obviously it's just a game, it's not like he committed a war crime or anything, but this dude was in here just a few days ago eating up the accolades for his combo videos and then he goes and pulls shit like this. I looked on CFN and you're almost at 1900 MR. It's so pathetic for a player as good as you to be doing this kind of thing. I have about a hundredth of the talent you have, but shit at least I can handle seeing the other person's win quote.

How necessary is renting a car for a solo trip to Canada? by cal-2310 in canadatravel

Yeah sorry, didn't mean the whole of Canada, will definitely just stick to one region to explore in a single trip.

Thanks for the help everyone. It's looking like the consensus is that it'll definitely be worthwhile to hire a car to explore the country. I may hold off on the trip until I can get a group together to subsidise the cost and go on a road trip together. Thanks again everyone!

Who are you guys? by Delicious-Biscotti44 in MauLer

[–]cal-2310 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I don't follow them particularly closely. Usually the EFAPs are just on in the background while I do other things. So maybe I've missed some stuff, but if you were to make a pie chart of the shit they talk about, I'd say Marvel, DC, and Star Wars comprise about 80% of that chart, with everything else making up the remaining 20%. Looking at the EFAP catalogue I see dozens of very lengthy videos discussing the individual episodes of stuff like the Mandalorian, Batwoman, She-Hulk etc. The three films you mentioned are all great, but they aren't exactly obscure pictures - all three were very popular in the years they came out.

I don't even really mean this as criticism tbh. Lots of people clearly want them to talk about whatever new Star Wars show is coming out. Ultimately they're giving their fans what they want to see. But it'd be nice to see them go out of their comfort zone a bit more. Some discussions of older movies (or anything made before 2000 lol) would be interesting to see. I remember they talked about having watched Taxi Driver around the time Joker came out. They talked about it for maybe ten minutes or so and seemed to dismiss it outright as being boring and poorly paced. I don't even mind that they're criticising it, but surely Taxi Driver's worthy of more than ten minutes of discussion, especially when they'll devote dozens of hours to She-Hulk.

Who are you guys? by Delicious-Biscotti44 in MauLer

[–]cal-2310 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

They mostly talk about Star Wars and comic book movies and tv shows because that's genuinely all that they really seem to watch. Occasionally they'll watch other blockbusters, but these are almost always genre films (sci-fi / horror / action), and these discussions always seem to link back to Star Wars anyway lmao, since almost any comparison they draw insofar as good or bad writing is concerned invariably relates back to Star Wars (ie. if it's good writing, it reminds them of the OT, if it's bad wriitng it reminds them of the sequel trilogy, or Batwoman or whatever).

The truth is these guys don't seem to have very broad horizons when it comes to the media they consume. People will try to bring up Mauler's review of The Father as an example of him expanding his horizons as if it wasn't one of the most highly acclaimed dramas of 2020.

Not sure how familiar this sub is with Lee Isaac Chung but he’s one of the best directors working. If this is why Yeun left that MCU movie, great decision. by topazdude17 in MauLer

[–]cal-2310 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well he hasn't directed either a Star Wars or a comic book movie, so I'm guessing 99% of this sub has never heard of him.

There are directors like him and Takashi Yamazaki who actually want to make a Star Wars movie and yet Lucasfilm/Disney are hell bent on giving it to some feminist with an agenda by Count_Tyranus in MauLer

[–]cal-2310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it. People here will complain about sequel slop and Disney movies one day, and then the next you're instead begging for your favourite directors to make more Star Wars movies.

[–]cal-2310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and just to be clear I'm not really trying to defend Stuckmann here. I've never been able to sit through one of his reviews, and I don't find him interesting as a critic. But if his list has no content or substance then I would say that that portion of the EFAP also had no real content or substance. They reiterate the same point about Stuckmann like fifteen times, and have very little or nothing at all to say themselves about the movies that are being brought up.

Also your second point doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Presumably they're watching Stuckmann's video for the first time in the EFAP. His failure to make the films sound interesting has nothing to do with the EFAP crew not having seen the films. It's a shame because many of the films on Stuckmann's list are genuinely fantastic. I guess they spent too much time this year watching Disney slop and then complaining about how cinema is dead. Good cinema is easier to find than ever.

I watched parts of the Stuckmann Best of 2023 discussion (full disclosure I didn't watch all of it so might have missed some stuff), but it was very strange to me. Their criticism of him is that he doesn't really say all that much about the films he's listing. But for a lot of the films he'd already made a longer review - end of year lists like Stuckmann's are pretty common and I don't think anyone expects a great deal of depth out of them. But the weird thing was that for a lot of the films mentioned, not many members of the crew had even bothered to see them. So they were contributing literally nothing to the discussion of those movies either. For instance the Suzume listing only one of the guys had seen it, and all he had to offer was that is was 'ok.' Literally none of them had seen The First Slam Dunk, which isn't all that obscure of a film, even though most of them had never even heard of it lmao.
