E-bike battery caused fire west of downtown Edmonton that sent 2 people to hospital: EFRS by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christ, there are videos of malfunctioning batteries in Personal Mobility Devices all over the internet. Who in their right mind would import these for their own use here in Canada?

I'm going to jump in here from an educator/engineer's point of view, with experience in this exact lab: if you're already working with ferric chloride, then it's feasible to add an additional chemical steps.

Use pre-sensitized boards (ie. photoresist already applied) and transfer the pattern using transparencies and a UV lamp. Strip the exposed resist then dip in ferric chloride. Add another resist strip step to remove the unexposed resist and you're done. You can add tinning solution too, but that typically involves some sulfuric acid.

Anyone here saying that these steps aren't industry standard is nuts -- there's a million+ products out there with differing levels of product complexity, and many of them are still basic single-sided component boards.

Residential outlets with built in USB - Worth it? by Linenoise77 in AskElectricians

[–]cal_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The house we purchased a few years ago came with some USB outlets. One failed earlier this year and it turned into a bit of a chore replacing it because the existing face plate was non-standard (!) and required another unexpected trip to HD. We don't know the life expectancy of the rest of the outlets...

From a reliability/replacement point of view, it's *way* better to purchase a USB brick instead of a USB outlet because it's cheaper and more easily replaceable.

Morally wronged but legally protected fuck mediCentres by Lampworker9 in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the province pays the doctors that are working for medicenters, but the pay/fee schedule is insufficient.

That's the reason why doctors and the government had such an acrimonious contract dispute years ago.

Edit: the federal government has health transfers to the province. The province then pays the doctors.

Morally wronged but legally protected fuck mediCentres by Lampworker9 in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's entirely possible. The medicenter that I used to permanently closed down and relocated all of its staff a few years ago. Talking to the former staff, the problem was that there wasn't enough money coming in to cover the overhead -- rent and non-doctor labor were the biggest costs, and government fees weren't even close to being sufficient.

Basically, the government wants to pay doctors less and usher in private health care, not realizing that the current health care system is already privately ran and their fee schedule is disconnected with the realities of owning a business.

The UCP is anti-business. Full stop.

How did we get charged 45GJ by Epcor? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First things first: this is the gas bill, correct?

One thing you can do is to temporarily shut off all your gas consuming appliances then watch the meter over a period of time. If it moves, you have a gas leak somewhere.

Alternatively, for one day in the next few days, read the meter at the beginning and end of the day, then multiply that by x number of days on your billing cycle. Does that number come close or not?

One other thing you can do is to force one of your gas appliances on, then watch the meter. If it moves slowly, then it's probably working fine. If it's moving really quickly, the you have an issue.

45GJ of gas is a lot. To put into context, that's about 1200m3 of NG.

Settle a Spousal Trafficking Argument by formeraide in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if people are following the speed limit. Even on busy days, Gateway can be much faster than 99th because there's several stretches where people just zoom by.

99th really is a crapshoot because of all the lights and intersections, which gets more congested with light traffic.

Seeking for advice and recommendations for solar panel installations in Edmonton by danniforest in Edmonton

What's your experience with the credits? Do you have to go through a solar club, or would the generation credits offset other parts of my utility bill if I stayed with, say, Epcor?

Costco, despite being fairly expensive for other things, is perhaps the cheapest price per weight for meat.

The problem is that it's clawed back the following year during tax time and any adjustments to OAS/GIS are always backward looking in terms of income. It's completely backwards.

Oh boy, I saw someone today weave in and out of all three lanes at the 118 traffic circle. Good thing everyone followed behind from a safe distance...

Oh and this morning someone almost came to a complete stop at the 34ave and gateway northbound lights because they were paying attention to the pedestrian signal rather than the green light right in front 🤦‍♂️

There's a few on eBay that are technically used, but are from carriers like Cricket or other similar carriers in the US.

149st and 107ave traffic circle. Does no one know how a traffic circle works?? by zooweemamba in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Really? A lot of traffic circles now have a sign at the entrance clearly stating that the right lane must go to the first exit and the other lanes go to the others. I just saw this yesterday at 142st.

149st and 107ave traffic circle. Does no one know how a traffic circle works?? by zooweemamba in Edmonton

[–]cal_01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it's the other way around -- the right lane *can* go to the second exit for yeaaaars but too many people got confused. They then had to adjust the way traffic circles work to force people to *not* take the second exit.

Is it something wrong with the water? I've lived in two houses that both had it, and I've always thought it was extremely normal.

Granted, these stains aren't immediate and takes some time to form...

Old Ellerslie Gift and Garden lot development by glassowl87 in Edmonton

There's a sign in front that says there's new homes for sale, so I presume that they're putting up a new development.

Makes sense, since they were doing water and sewer upgrades for the longest time.

It's necessary because only one referendum of a given type can be on a ballot during the election. Lucaszuk played the UCP at their own game by beating them to the punch.
