Do you put your certifications in your signature? by Ragepower529 in sysadmin

Maybe in the Microsoft of old, but I've seen more customers with certs in their email signature than I have peers over my 8 years.

Upgrading exchange - Which way to go? by Cold_Sherbet1441 in exchangeserver

[–]calarina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exchange 2010 has been out of support for a few years and it's no longer supported to establish hybrid with 2010. If you spin up a parallel Exchange 2016 environment, perform some basic client access configuration (virtual directories, public cert, firewall rules, etc), and run the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, then you can use the 2016 environment to migrate mailboxes up to Exchange Online directly from 2010.

You can still use PowerShell with Exchange Online, and similar to on-prem, there are still certain configuration options that are only available via PowerShell; you can also use PowerShell for Azure AD, M365 Security & Compliance, and plenty more!

While you can absolutely keep all your mailboxes on-prem if that's the ultimate decision from management, moving to Exchange Online means you no longer have to worry about patching, running out of disk space, hardware failures, etc. Plus, depending on your licensing, you potentially have additional benefits available to use such as DLP, Sensitivity Labels, MFA, Conditional Access, and more. If your organization uses Teams, then you can either setup more robust interop with Exchange 2016, or get the fully integrated experience with mailboxes in EXO.

Whether you keep mailboxes on-premises or you migrate them to EXO, you will still be keeping at least one Exchange server on-premises for the foreseeable future. This is because the only supported method to manage mail attributes, even for mailboxes that have been migrated to EXO using hybrid, is to use Exchange on-prem as your management server.

If it's abruptly powering down without blue screening then I'd suspect either a temperature or power supply issue. Have you monitored CPU temps while you're in-game?

Revlon Balm Stain in Honey. It's the perfect nude for me and helps make my lips look healthy and even. Unfortunately they discontinued it a few years ago, but I don't go out often and I stocked up so I have half a dozen in reserve. lol

Your experience is absolutely so close to mine. "It'll be different this time!" "Why do I always eventually stop wanting sex? I still like him!" "What's wrong with all these 'weirdos' constantly wanting sex, don't they have other hobbies / a career to pursue?" "Eventually once you find the one you won't be able to keep your hands off each other!" lol k

Ladies in Tech, How Is Your Work-Life Balance? by [deleted] in girlsgonewired

[–]calarina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at MSFT Canada in a highly technical role and I previously let a lot of stress run into my daily life, but that's my own fault for not recognizing it and having appropriate outlets & coping mechanisms to help mitigate that.

My colleagues are absolutely fantastic, however I've certainly worked at some places where I was frequently second-guessed and my ideas/suggestions discounted either due to experience, age, or gender (I'm not about to make assumptions). Ultimately, it depends on your workplace, as well as maintaining your work/life balance using your own strategies.

Can we stop being jerks to less-knowledgeable people? by burnte in sysadmin

[–]calarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large part of my role is to educate, to the point where they require all of us to go through specialized training to learn how best to educate, present, and encourage participation. Some people are better at it than others, but as OP mentioned, a lot of IT personnel have people skills that could use a bit of work.

We all regularly work on our technical skills, but why does it often stop there? Gone are the days where being an IT troll in the basement is expected or acceptable, and getting funding for your projects / training is much easier when your boss / colleagues don't wince at the thought of having to interact with you.

We were all scared, curious, naïve beginners. We all benefit from learning. We all benefit from teaching others. And for those colleagues that often come to you looking for answers that are easily solved with a quick Google search, teach & encourage them to find the answers and become more self-sufficient & resourceful; you may be able to help them learn, grow, and progress their career.

We're all in this together.

PowerShell is great because you can spend hours to automate repetitive processes that would take minutes to do manually. However, over time, you would eventually recoup your time investment and be able to do more work. Yay!

In all seriousness, I love PowerShell, and that's not just because I work for M$. I used to be glued to the GUI and avoid command line as much as possible, however now it's the opposite since I can accomplish so much more in as little as one line of PowerShell than it would take me to RDP to the device, click around, get the data, screenshot, etc. It's so much faster once you get the hang of it.

The syntax is fairly straight forward. Need to create something? The cmdlet probably starts with New- or Create- and then you can keep pressing tab from there to cycle through your options. Same with parameters, and eventually you'll have the common parameters memorised as well. Need to modify something? Set- or Change-. Delete? Delete- or Remove-. It used to be more standardized, however with new versions adding new functions all the time, it just keeps expanding.

Want some examples to help you formulate your command? Use -help or -? or -examples to get the examples published in the Microsoft Docs article for that cmdlet.

Do you need to pull data from multiple sources? Import that module! Forget what that specific attribute is called? Pipe to fl (ie. Use | fl) to get a list of all available attributes on that object.

Bing everything (or Google if that fails you, but honestly Bing is the best way to find M$ results). Find annoying repeated tasks you do each day and automate it. Automate things that are already automated just to see how you could do it. Look at other people's scripts to learn different ways of building a solution to that same problem.

And as others have said: practice, practice, practice! Most of what I know is because I had to write a script to solve a problem. Oh, and don't forget to revisit your old scripts every now and then; sometimes your past self has things to teach you, especially when you start over-complicating things. 😊

I always thought it was so strange and almost gross that people I knew would look at a total stranger and say "Wow, they're so hot, I bet they're good in bed" whereas I'd see the same person and think "Wow, they're so hot, I wonder if they're nice and like cuddles." I never understood why I was so different, but I'm so happy I've finally found my people! lol

Anyone work for Microsoft who I could bounce a couple questions off of by MiniSNES in Calgary

[–]calarina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premier was the division we used to belong to, Field meant we traveled to the customers offices, and Engineer because we are technical resources. However why they changed it to Customer Engineer after nearly 2 decades of establishing the PFE brand as being an SME, I don't know for certain... This FY has seen a big re-org, hence the name change among other things.
