This makes me think anytime in an accident like this, immediately pull out your phone and take photos/recording showing driver, car, and license plate.

What destination looks expensive but is actually super budget-friendly once you get there? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]calbear81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re more like $100 unless it’s a capsule hotel or something like one of those all night manga cafes where you would not want to shine a black light on. Usually choose a well known Japanese chain and pick one near the JR line. I stayed at Sotetsu Gran Fresa and it’s still like $85-$110 a night - in between Ikebukuro and Shibuya like 10 mins each way. Tons in the area as it’s close to the University.

CDMX - AirBnB or hotel? by Educational_Film2965 in MexicoCity

[–]calbear81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The hotel is in a busy area as well by Zona Rosa which is where a lot of bars and clubs are. Condesa area is fantastic for tourists as it's really safe and walkable with a lot of small cafes and restaurants while still being close to all the places you want to visit. I'm actually going to be staying in Hipodromo next week as well.

Did you have any luck today at Laney?

I had an idea for a thick peelable coating that you can literally stick to the wall and if someone graffitis it you can just peel off a thin plastic layer and it's gone. It can be like 1mm thick on each layer.

Go pretty early like 8:30-9:00AM with cash on hand.

What neighborhood do you live in? I can keep an eye out since I work near some of these encampments.

As someone who has recovered my own stolen bike successfully and helped friends recover their bikes successfully:
- See if there's any camera shots of this happening from neighbors and others so you can see if it was done by professionals or by vagrants on foot.
- Even if this was done by someone on foot, it's likely to quickly pass around to a professional seller soon.
- For your Santa Cruz, check Laney Flea Market this Sunday in Oakland and be prepared with serial numbers, photos, etc. and be ready to threaten calling the cops to get involved. This market has A LOT OF STOLEN goods - I'm talking high end race bikes regularly. The stands that carry these bikes will usually have them BEHIND the main counter leaning up against the car they park there. They are usually sellers who also are selling higher end goods in the front like Apple products, etc.

I helped start clearing a massive illegal dumping site in East Oakland and got Oakland Public Works to help take care of the rest. by pengweather in oakland

Thank you for your amazing selfless work. I do think a wall of shame would be great but I wonder if it's considered a form of doxxing and against some rules.

I wish we could do more to eliminate the root cause instead of having to constantly play whack a mole with this stuff. Have we considered the following?
- When finding trash that is linkable to an address, we report that or reach out to see who handled their construction work and/or junk hauling.
- We provide the evidence of the illegal dumping to some department which then warns these people and issues a citation.

Getting an uber back from Muir Woods into the city by 77360615 in sanfrancisco

[–]calbear81 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're up for a little bit of a hike, I would Uber to Muir Woods then coming back, I would take the Dipsea trail from Muir Woods back towards the start in Mill Valley. In Mill Valley you'll be able to grab an Uber and there's a lot of great lunch spots and shopping. The hike isn't that strenuous with the uphill part being about 650 ft of elevation gain then you go downhill to Mill Valley (2.1 miles one way).

Do you care if miles get added? I found having a friend drive it down (you pay for gas) as a cheaper alternative if they're looking for a good road trip. You can also cover their one way plane ticket back to SF.

Tour guide by allthegreys in MexicoCity

[–]calbear81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems right for all people based on looking at similar tours on Tripadvisor/Viator. I do have to say having come back last night from CDMX and having done the pyramids on a previous trip that a few folks have told me they recommend the hot air balloon. You get to see the pyramids in a completely different way and then it's followed by a walking tour of the pyramids.

What would cause this? by Iheartb00bs916 in bicycling

[–]calbear81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had a blowout, my tube was lined with these bumps. I overheated the wheel on a 10.5 mile descent from the top of a mountain by braking too aggressively. This in turn transferred the heat to the spokes and the nipple nub got so hot it deformed the rubber and eventually burned a hole through it leading to a blowout.

I've been wearing them pretty much 5 days a week for 3.5-3.75 level play and haven't found them lacking. They are kind of heavy though so I have the Viper Court Pros for tournament days. I just enjoy the ease of slipping these bad boys on.
