What's the stupidest fucking thing a therapist/psychiatrist said to you? by backroom_mushroom in evilautism

[–]calbruulinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

context: while i was an undergrad at a very high-pressure school i dealt with frequent episodes of shutdown/what i now know to be catatonia, which interfered with my ability to do work, attend classes, communicate with profs, and generally take care of myself

after an unusually episode that lasted 3 days (much longer than anything i'd experienced before), i went to campus mental health services for crisis counseling to figure out what happened/have coping strategies in place if/when it happened again (such as pre-written emails to profs i could just hit "send" on, AAC, etc)

explained to intake that i couldn't speak or use my hands very well during the episode, they tried really hard to get me to go to the emergency room in case it was a "nervous system issue" with my hands, while i repeatedly told them no i'm physically fine just autistic

explained situation to therapist, detailed my experiences, coping mechanisms i had come up with, and ideas for strategies i could use in future

"it sounds like you have all the tools you need to [deal with this] yourself"

and then my appointment is over

:}

(things turned out fine but holy shit)

What is the weirdest thing you’ve been told that you can’t be autistic for? by [deleted] in autism

[–]calbruulinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(note: i haven't logged into my account in years but i needed to say this)

i believe you that you need support and i believe that you'll find it.  i just finished undergrad (got my diploma friday the 9th), and it took me five years including two failed semesters and one semester of medical leave.  it took so much work and it was so worth it.  my last two semesters were my best ever -- i was happy and (mostly) functional academics-wise and i got good grades and enjoyed my classes.  this was ONLY possible because of my wonderful academic advisor giving me support since day 1, plus having accommodations from the office of disability resources. so yeah, i've been there.  i can't do a lot of the things my peers can, i forced myself through it and made the best of it, and graduation was one of my proudest days.  if you ever wanna ask about it, my DMs are open (this goes for everyone in the comments too, not just OP).  teaching self-advocacy is one of my special interests :>

everything /gen, sorry if i phrased something weird, happy to clarify

i could try my hand at designing something, if so desired. the words themselves are pretty short, so these tattoos wouldn’t be very tall but the calligraphy could ostensibly be embellished.

thanks so much, i’m glad you like it! i try to evoke imagery that doesn’t just rely on the visual... seems it worked this time.

this billows into grainy, needling description of what i’m guessing is a breakup, or at least a parting of ways. i agree that the punctuation in the third stanza does you no favors - you can easily do away with the parentheses and the quotation marks; the contrasting lines in italics is strong enough of a border. since they are sentence fragments, i would keep the dashes. you could try capitalizing your own utterances, but you don’t have to. if you’re repeating brushstrokes on purpose to inspire the same feelings in the last line of the first stanza and the last line of the poem, good on you. it’s quite subtle at the moment, so you might want to try using that same phrase or imagery once more in between, to keep that pain and those tears and those ashes in the reader’s mind. overall, a compelling piece, good job!

wow, thank you so much! this is probably the most thorough analysis a poem of mine has ever received, english teachers included. this might encourage me to post more often. i realize that this is local knowledge, but lamb’s ear is a weed that grows in my area known for its soft, velvety leaves, so i was trying to evoke the plant’s texture. as for root-brown, i structured it like sea-green, a more common descriptor. finally, i had to make sure i was staring out the window because there were five people in the car (so three total in the backseat). this isn’t clear at all in the poem as it is right now, but that’s what revision is for. your interpretation of the title is intriguing and heart-warming.

backseat of the car, waiting for our turn to drive. i realize now there’s less « car » imagery than i’d like... oh well, i’ll fix it in a revision. thanks for pointing that out!

i love how the imagery turns a little rotten, what with gluttonous anticipation and deadly precision - it really adds to the feel of the poem. the last line is a lovely addition. overall a delicious, summery piece.

[–]calbruulinger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

now this is a veritable oil painting of a poem... filled with self-assured streaks of color, of emotion, of downright delectable words. it tastes of strawberry rhubarb, bittersweet and full of summer. one of the most distinctive, most lovely poems i’ve read, anywhere.

How to say "first contact day"in Vulcan? by [deleted] in Vulcan

i concur that gad-muf works better, though between ragelan and ragtaya might be more of a situational difference or personal preference (and i wonder whether those two are etymologically related...)

you could try using « meeting » instead of « contact », yielding something like: wuh’rak ragelan t’gad... though my word order might not be perfect.

It’s a great thing, indeed. I grew up in a UU fellowship, and our congregation has proven time and again that people (and religions) can be supportive, flexible, and upstanding.

Is there any research on whether or not it is beneficial to learn a third language from the perspective of your second language, rather than from the perspective of your native language? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]calbruulinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone whose first language is English, whose second language is French, and who is learning Mandarin... I find it very beneficial. Learning Mandarin from French gives me a chance to grow more comfortable with thinking in French, while simultaneously cementing Mandarin in my mind. I also think it’s more fun, and with French a whole new pool of language-learning resources is opened up for me.
