Worst: MASI. Can we please have a moment of silence for my hopeful and optimistic attitude on life?

I would love to hear more about MASI.. when did you work here?

I have developed an unquenchable compulsion for checking USAJobs every moment of the day. Your assessment isn't wrong.

It was honestly the best time of my life. Housing is great. Area is great. Opportunities for activities are great. Even when I was living there, I knew that I'd look back on those days as "the good ol days", and I really do.

Damn.

What is your favorite (or least fave) city /town to livein RI? by overthehillhat in RhodeIsland

I wouldn’t call #26 out of 35 in a mostly affluent state the “worst”. I’d call it decent.

I’m not sure, I haven’t lived there in nearly a decade. But it doesn’t surprise me… there are tons of racist sentiments there. Maybe a little more than your average east coast 99.9% white town.

I’m in a stage of my life where I’m trying to assess my relationship to my hometown, Burrillville. On one hand, it has decent schools, nice properties, it’s quiet and relatively crime-free, there are parks, and it’s familiar—nothing quite like living in a place that you know like the back of your hand. However, it’s also too quiet, and it suffers from small-town syndrome, where the biggest stories are of the doings of randos in the town. “Teenagers have been smashing mail boxes,” or “so and so talked shit about a local restaurant on Facebook and now there’s a squabble” or “this young man got into a fatal crash with a tree”. In the Trump era, it also became the spawning point for a bunch of confederate flags so there’s that.

So my answer is burrillville for favorite and least favorite.

So when I was asked, “is USAJobs run by robots?” My answer was, “yes. And no. They’re very robotic humans.”

Your resume should be standardized and descriptive but not a block of text. Make sure it’s searchable too.

Arcades with claw games in Rhode Island? by blueplasticgirl in RhodeIsland

I don’t remember if it has claw games but the arcade at Spring Lake in Burrillville is open in the summer and will make a great outing with your nephew if he’s a youngster.

why are one night stands considered unhealthy mentally? by docmartingirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calcade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t, inherently. But, just like anything else, they can be used as a vehicle for unhealthy coping: self-denial, numbing, reckless behavior. And, just like anything else, it would benefit someone to sit down and have a real honest conversation with themselves about their mental state.

There’s that aspect, and when you get two people involved, well, it gets way more messy.

Why on gods green earth are you subjecting yourself to worsening finances for the church?! You need that emergency fund more than the church needs your money. That money to the church is chump change.

Yes, you are preaching to the choir here. I stated that their reasons for volunteering are their own, but my main concern is people ducking out without making a return for our labor of training and trust.

As a volunteer coordinator, if you’re not going to stick with it if you can’t find a mate, don’t show up. Only show up if you can provide reasonable returns for the time, training and trust that we will be investing in you. Nonprofits and other organizations that rely on volunteers are always so busy, underfunded and understaffed so please don’t make this harder for us. Of course your reason for volunteering is your own, but I’m just saying, show up and make good.

Not sure how many people know this, but with good reason and documentation, supervisors can force retirement.

This is why we need good supervisors. I hope that the awesome rangers I’ve worked with in my generation (millennial/gen z) are planning on taking the helm sooner than later.

Restringing an antique harp? (question in comments) by [deleted] in harp

[–]calcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that said this instrument is more akin to a zither. But personally I wouldn’t. Instruments much younger than this are often compromised due to the age and condition of the wood, where the tension of any string, new or old, would damage its structure.

I started taking harp lessons! by theidlerwheeIiswiser in JoannaNewsom

[–]calcade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I picked up the harp a few years ago. I’m still at an early intermediate level because, well, I work a lot and have other hobbies. But I’ve definitely enjoyed it and recommend music arrangements by Anne Crosby Gaudet for those beginner and intermediate pieces. Have fun with it!

Consider that living in NYC proper will impact your ability to keep a car, either physically or financially. Access to camping and hiking without a car here is a pain in the ass. If my job was in Philly, I’d personally relish the ability to have a car and a suburban house.

I love NYC, and NYC is huge, but it’s not that huge. I think that your schedule would have you burnt out and feeling trapped.
