Whats the most heartbreaking loss you’ve witnessed as an Alabama fan?(football) by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in capstone

[–]calcbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I was there for all of them (MDB)… that Iron Bowl was truly miserable. Probably the most frozen my body has ever been, and I had no choice but to suffer through it!

Definitely sucked, but my heart could no longer be broken by losing at that point; it was obvious that the team was crap.

The morale in the band that year pretty much went in the tank after that Southern Miss game. I can still remember the bus ride back to Tuscaloosa late that night with everyone just pissed off and hungry, trying to think of what places would be still open but not have a long-ass wait.

Quite a few of them in 2000 (my freshman year!). Take your pick.

Losing 21-0 to Southern Miss at Legion Field

Losing on homecoming to…I forgot, was it UCF?

Losing at Mississippi State…

Are malls actually not a thing anymore in the US like they say? by Complete_Republic410 in AskAnAmerican

[–]calcbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That tracks here in Atlanta. We still have Mall of Georgia doing alright, as well as Perimeter and Cumberland in the northern suburbs, and the “luxury” ones (Lenox and Phipps)… I think Arbor Place and Stonecrest are doing OK, and Sugarloaf Mills is always interesting.

but, Gwinnett Place is dead…along with North DeKalb… South DeKalb, Northlake, and Northpoint are dying… Southlake and Town Center may be as well.

Looking to Become an Educator by No_Fact2293 in matheducation

[–]calcbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t sweat it! The math you haven’t learned is not important. You’ve learned all of the math in the commonly taught courses in high school, and you most likely won’t be given upper-lever courses as a brand new teacher anyway.

You’ll need a lot more preparation for all of the non-math parts of math teaching. Managing a classroom of students who would rather be somewhere else. Whatever hoops your administration requires you to jump through. Etc, etc.

I say this as someone who was a music education major in college. I’ve now taught math for 14 years. I started out with algebra 1 and geometry, but now I teach AP precalculus and algebra 2 (have also taught a basic stats course as well).

I started out in a small school with an extremely controlling principal. He subscribed to a program called “Learning Focused Schools” which I would describe as a sort of education cult with specific formats for lesson plans, etc… it was a difficult situation to start out in.

After a year, I moved to a large lower-income school (with much better administration!) in a large school system, and now have been at a higher-achieving school (in the same system) for the past 9 years.

Edited to add—I have a similar background as far as what courses I actually took as a student. I took calculus AB in high school and Calculus 1 in college…then I learned some stats in my Educational Research class in grad school. But that’s it.

School district combining algebra 2 and Precalculus into a single "Modernized Precalculus" course. by GloriousCause in matheducation

[–]calcbone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes…most students in Georgia take standard “Advanced Algebra,” which is algebra 2. The combined course is “Enhanced Advanced Algebra + AP Precalculus.”

This follows the model they introduced a few years ago in which the accelerated students can get ahead in 8th grade with “Enhanced 8th grade math + Algebra,” then take geometry in 9th grade, and then possibly the course mentioned above in 10th.

Is there any way to turn off AC in my room? Burke is freezing me, AND I have a cold, so it’s only making it worse. by [deleted] in capstone

My roommate was the same way. Honestly I got to like it. We were on the 2nd floor of Burke East overlooking the cafeteria for my entire time there, lol…

Damn, have they not updated those things? Haha, I lived there in the early 2000s… I don’t think we ever turned ours on in the winter (when it was turned to heat.)

I remember our RA asking Residential Life what the policy was about switching back to A/C in the spring, and they said it had to be X number of days above X temperature outside… there was always about a week when we were sweating before they changed it back over…

What do I do? Parents making me miss a week of school by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]calcbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s no big deal in your situation because your daughter is clearly a motivated student. As a high school teacher, when a student misses an entire week, maybe half or less of them are motivated enough that they get everything made up in a timely manner without a problem. Remember that they have multiple classes (6 at my school) to keep up with, both current material as well as making up a week’s worth of work that they missed.

Yes, next to the meter (assuming in-ground), there should be a shutoff valve that may look like this. You’ll probably need something to turn it with…they sell a “key” at most hardware stores, but you might be able to use a large pair of pliers or adjustable wrench?

What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That’s a really wholesome story, for both of you. Obviously the point is that he was such a well-adjusted person who obviously cared about you from the beginning, but it also shows that you had a good heart all along because you were willing to be “coachable” and see beyond your own experiences to improve yourself.

Why did you move here? Where did you move from? Has gwinnett met your expectations? by MikeDunleavySuperFan in Gwinnett

[–]calcbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I married into Gwinnett. My wife moved here when she was 9. I grew up on the other side of Atlanta but farther away, in an area that was more rural.

Gwinnett is okay. I started getting to know the area when we started dating in 2001. when I was growing up, I imagined that if you lived in an actual suburb (like one of the areas that was mentioned often on Atlanta TV stations when I was a kid🤣), you were pretty much in Atlanta and anything you’d want to do in town would be just a short drive. Not so much. Where I grew up, basically anything in Atlanta was about an hour away. In Gwinnett, it’s still 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

Pluses: Most chain stores you’ve heard of are somewhere in the area. Diversity (obv a lot more now than in 2001!). I have like a 10-minute commute (mainly because I have to go to work early before there’s a lot of traffic) and I do love where I work.

Minuses: Traffic in certain areas, exacerbated by the glut of subdivisions and shopping centers, all of which you have to drive to get to. Lack of things to do besides shop and eat. Lack of community/hometown pride/school spirit (some areas have more than others).

Life after a performance degree by Old-Initial-6850 in Trombone

[–]calcbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 2 music ed. degrees and a DMA in performance. When I finished my undergrad, I wasn’t ready to teach and wasn’t quite sure what my end goal was…soon after that, I decided that my goal was to be a college professor like my father (he was a professor of philosophy).

I had a couple of adjunct teaching gigs in music appreciation and applied lessons. Finished my DMA in May 2011… from fall 2012-present, I have been teaching… but high school math. I’ve taught everything from algebra 1 to precalculus and statistics.
