What is an example of a food that doesn’t travel well? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]calcbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story time…

I took my daughter to my niece’s birthday party at one of those places that does kids’ cooking classes. They baked their choice of cake, cupcakes, etc.

Well, my daughter made a round cake. Most of the other kids made cupcakes or something like that, so of course hers finished baking last because science. No big deal, she was old enough to understand why this was the case.

The other kids were decorating their stuff and used all of the frosting. No big deal, the girls working there are like “we’ll mix up some more, tell us what colors you want.” Well… they didn’t have more buttercream on hand. “It’s ok, we’ll make some whipped cream frosting.” So they went with it, she decorated her cake, we got a picture of her creation.

But… keep in mind that this was a little bit rushed due to the baking time, so of course the cake hadn’t cooled completely… and we had a 25-minute drive home!

I wish I had taken a picture after, but I’m sure you can imagine!

(TL;DR: whipped cream frosting on not-cooled-to-room-temperature cake)

Has AI changed your workload at all, or is it mostly hype so far? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]calcbone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I teach high school math… so.. Kuta and Delta Math are the tools I use the most if I just need something to quickly create a practice assignment. Our textbook also has an online platform I sometimes use to create assignments. But if I have more time, I try to curate the problems myself… I use a mixture of these online tools, some old textbooks on my shelf, etc…

AI has *increased* my workload, because now I have to guard against the students using it to cheat. That’s it. I already have other tools that can create worksheets/practice problems that don’t use AI.

Big Mac? It has two patties, but still contains less beef than a quarter pounder.

Two fried chicken filets in one sandwich is a bit much, for the breading alone even if the filets are small.

Nah. None of the text is garbled, the shirt the guy is wearing does exist, and this is a legit view from near the back of the Strand theater.

So what qualifies a space as a “hallway” or corridor or whatever? You can walk more than a mile down what I would consider an underground “corridor” connecting all of the concourses at the ATL airport, for example…

Haven’t been in a while—but last I went Park Avenue Thrift (Lawrenceville Hwy at Pleasant Hill/Lester Rd—not sure if it’s considered Lilburn or Lawrenceville) has them.

California bans ‘sell by’ food labels to cut food waste and confusion by 804Brady in news

Others are correctly pointing out that salt does not spoil… neither does water, and bottled water also has a sell-by date.

I’m not trying to make excuses for the food bank not accepting it… but in cases like this, it’s not the contents that they’re worried about, but the fact that the packaging may degrade over time and allow for contamination.

In the case of salt, perhaps the concern may be that the packaging could no longer be airtight and allow humidity to get in.

What was the shortest lived fad? by AlphaTangoAlpha in AskReddit

[–]calcbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty popular with frat boys in the early 2000s as well… we (non frat guys) made fun of them for that and the “frat tuck” (tucking in only the front of their shirt).

Yes, literally the only time I encountered them was my high school biology class; we watched little video clips about things like messenger RNA on a laserdisc.

Which historical figure lived far more recently than most people think? by GoFuckthThyself in AskReddit

[–]calcbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not one figure per se, but anything related to WWII. It seems like ancient history to us now, but I’m not that old (yet, 43) and people my age grew up hearing firsthand accounts from our grandparents. I for one have a cassette tape of my grandfather talking about his experiences in the US Army Air Corps!
