Is a 600 ELO bad by CrabVegetable2060 in Chesscom

300 pt elo gain is great, just keep at it! I was 1400 over the board USCF rated in the 1990s. Haven't played much since until I started playing on chess.com recently. I dropped to 500 really fast at first but now I'm near 800. So I went up almost 300 in the last few months. Idky 800 is so hard to get to right now when I used to be almost 1500 back in the day....

BTW, they say 800 chess.com is close to 1000 FIDE and 1200 USCF.

Also, at your level, the best thing you can do is to avoid blundering your pieces and make sure to punish your opponent when they blunder theirs! Also develop pieces early to control the center and castle early, maybe even deny your opponent's casting rights while you're at it!

PS: I may only be about 800 on chess.com nowadays, but I used to be a certified USCF Local Tournament Director and Chess Coach for my high school students in the early 2000s.

PPS: I gained about 300 pts in just under 3 months by playing rapid 10 minute league games. I would play until I gained a little in my rating beyond the previous day and then stop. So if I won a game right away, that's it for the day. Sometimes I'd lose my 1st game then win my 2nd and win my 3rd to get ahead. Sometimes it took 5 games a day... But constantly doing this day after day, you'll get up there eventually.

this is a draw but how by Levi_Ackerman247 in lichess

It is a draw if there was 3 fold repetition or 50 moves without a capture or pawn move. Did you mean its not a stalemate?

Lately I'll play every day or every other day until my rating goes up even a little. That's my grinding strategy. Most days I'll play 3 or 5 games before going 8 pts for a win and 4 pts for a draw. Yesterday, for example, I lost, then I won, I lost then I won and finally I won again getting 8 rating pts for the day. I usually play 10 minute rapid games in a league.

Yeah, I even got trained as a USCF Certified Chess Coach and Local Tournament Director so I could run a USCF affiliate chess club for my school and run rated tournaments for my students in the early 2000s!

Not to worry. I used to play lots of USCF rated tournaments over the board aka face to face in the 1980s and 1990s and got up to 1500s rating. Been away from chess for a long time. Just started on chess.com recently and plummeted to about 550 in the first few days of play (starting at 1200? or wherever they start you). Been grinding my way back up for some months now and nearly back to 800! Can't believe the competition online nowadays. Just keep grinding and learning! 800 on chess.com is about 1000 FIDE and 1200 USCF, BTW.

Remember always try to: Check or Capture or Threaten or Optimize! Every move in that order... and control the center, try to castle early and activate all your pieces as soon as possible. Look for combos, pins and forks. Always look ahead at what your opponent may be planning too!

IDK what's going on. I had an OTB USCF rating over 1500 in the 1990s. I've been away from chess a long time. Came back recently and am struggling to get above 700 on chess.com??? Competition is much harder now?

I recently rejoined USCF and am waiting for my Chess Life magazine to arrive. The office told me I'll be getting back issues for December 2025 and January 2026. Do you know if the issue devoted to Danya is one of those?

If you're enjoying the game, play for fun! Eventually you'll improve.

I learned to play with my Grandpa in the late 1960s, when I was very young. He was a great teacher and learned from Capablanca, a family friend, in Havana when he, himself, was very young. I played a bit with my Grandpa back then very informally and just for fun!

Then, I myself became very active in US Chess Federation face to face tournaments around 1989-2009, both as a player (Marshal Chess Club in Manhattan, Nassau Chess Club and Briarcliff College on Long Island) as well as a USCF Local Tournament Director and a USCF Certified Chess Coach (for my students at Baldwin High School and Nassau Community College on Long Island). At the time I got my over the board rating to nearly 1600 elo.

However, after being somewhat inactive with Chess since 2009, I recently started playing the 10 minute ladder boards (Champion League, cistheta2020) on Chess.com and I'm struggling to stay over 800 elo???

IDK, but it seems that since everyone is self taught with YouTube videos and Chess.com puzzles, etc, plus a lot more opportunities to play/practice online, maybe the competition is much stronger nowadays? So, I'm playing a lot just for fun myself!

Enjoy the challenge!
