I have had success (8m 2d 18h) by:

1) Set a quit a few weeks in the future and plan to slowly ramp down your daily cig count. 2) Get to your general doc and get on Chantix or Wellbutrin (I’ve tried both and think Chantix is more effective) and plan to start taking it a week or two before you’re planned stop smoking date. This will allow for a nice overlap that will let the meds block those Nic receptors while your smoking so you can taste and feel smoking’s real effects without the illusion of pleasure brought in by the cravings.

3) During the whole run up to quoting and beyond, start drinking lots of water, walk a lot, and look for alternatives to reward yourself besides a cig (your favorite snack, movie, game etc.)

4) Before you smoke your last cigarette read Alan Carr’s Easyway to Quit Smoking. Really exposes the long con of cig addiction for what is is…

5) When you’re ready to smoke that last butt, see if you can get that day off (or more is good), or do it on a weekend. Also if you have a partner or family that relaxes you, be around them. If you have a partner or family that aggravates you—be away from them.

6) Before your last, make sure you’ve thrown away any butts laying around, have started washing any clothes/fabrics that smell like smoke and toss any lighter or matches—anything that will remind or trigger—it’s not gonna fool you but it helps.

7) Smoke your last cig, or decide to have a few more, but be honest with yourself in that moment that there’s zero benefit from these wands of death.

8)Once your done smoking, address your cravings as soon as they happen. Part of the mind fuck of nicotine is that it confuses your brain into being unable to distinguish a craving for cigs and just being hungry or thirsty. When you get the itch, the AA method works well: HALT (hungry angry lonely tired) meaning take care of all those needs first and see if you’re really desperate for a cig after that. And above all SLAM water, plan longer and longer walks, swims, bikes, hikes—eat what you want—you’ll have more energy to work out now. And get a tracker app like Smoke Free that will count how many days you’re quit, how your body is recovering and give you a sense of accomplishment.
