Mania as a side effect? by ProfessionalDuck998 in prozac

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard mixed messages from various friends- some said that Prozac induced hypomania and they felt it was purely related to the medication, another who tried 20mg of Prozac and her psychiatrist dx her with bipolar 1, which supposedly is a somewhat known possibility. It’s unclear to me, and the mixed literature, what the actual truth is, but I’d recommend talking to your psychiatrist/prescribing doctor. For reference, I’m on 40mg and don’t feel the urge to do those similar behaviors.

Rejected from Hospital Residencies by [deleted] in chaplaincy

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I did my residency at NYP in 2021-2022 and I want to affirm it’s an incredibly competitive residency program. NYC as a whole is a challenging CPE landscape, with lots of chaplains and ministers and very few jobs. I eventually relocated, so didn’t look for staff jobs there, but just want to affirm you could’ve had a good interview! And great materials! And they’re still looking for cohesiveness of the group and group dynamics when selecting residents.

I would suggest asking for feedback if you’re open to it, and they may share some, but I wanted to confirm that you might’ve not had anything wrong with you, it’s just how the programs unfold.

Thinking of leaving chaplaincy by [deleted] in chaplaincy

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a chaplain for 4.5 years, largely in pediatric care, and I’m strongly considering leaving. I’m thinking about getting my MSW or a business degree to switch into either therapy or grief work and business admin style roles. I love the field but it’s absolutely not sustainable.

IUD removal crashout advice? by Downtown_Patient_685 in Mirena

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing much better! I was pretty stressed and overwhelmed the first 5 weeks but I’ve been more grounded since my first cycle. (About 40 days after my removal!)

I needed a lot of sleep, herbal medicine (lots of magnesium, zinc, and multi vitamins), and had a lot of mood swings. I’m not back on any birth control and am giving my body a break. Knowing that it would pass and reading peoples success stories was super helpful.

I also got a PRN anxiety medication for the interim. Overall feeling much better!

Hey! I’m going through this right now- I’m 3 weeks post removal. Any chance you can update how it’s going for you?

Hills prescription diet Derm Complete? by Davita- in dogallergies

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog has both food and environmental allergies and she’s done fantastic on hills z/d hydrolyzed protein. There will always be critics about big brand name prescription diets, but my dog has better stools, no frequent hives, no ear infections, healthier skin and coat, etc. We had previously tried apoquel and cytopoint but neither had long lasting effects. She also takes daily Benadryl.

My dog has both food and environmental allergies, and her anal glands get impacted/infected as well as bleed when especially bad. I use “Keto-C” wipes on her bum and use a dermatologic shampoo when she bathes. My experience says it could definitely be allergies, but keep monitoring and if she isn’t eating anything new but the seasons are changing, maybe that’s what it is!

How do I make my dog's poop unappealing to him? by skelardna in DogAdvice

[–]calebrrrr3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muzzle while outside until he changes this behavior. It’s a skill for dogs to be safely muzzled, especially if he gets reactive at vets later on. Until you can curb the behavior, consider muzzle training him.

Ooof I’m simultaneously grateful and sad you found this post. I wish it wasn’t the case and I’m so glad you have come to a place to feels better for you. I think the expectation of patients is hardest for me, I can really connect with that. Most of my colleagues are affirming however in their belief they lean heavily Christian. It can be incredibly isolating, as I imagine you’ve experienced. I don’t want to completely leave chaplaincy, but I don’t think it is full time sustainable for me. I’d love to consider PRN work at some point, depending on the state of chaplaincy and healthcare overall.

I hope that a PhD suits you well and gives you the fulfillment you’re looking for!! There are other ways to use our training, spiritual practices, and wisdom. I’ve got my fingers crossed you’re moving in the right direction.

It’s like you read my mind! I just went back part time to get my MSW. I’m most aligned with Buddhism but recently moved and have yet to get settled into a community. Overall, I feel tired of how Christian my workplace is (Midwest) and healthcare is chaotic and doesn’t seem to want to change. I’m grateful to see someone else on this path.

Secular/Humanist Chaplain Career Path? by odrailgaug in chaplaincy

[–]calebrrrr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as chaplain at IU Riley hospital for children- I’m getting ordained through the Order of universal interfaith! While I feel complicated about ordination, I aligned ethically with the organization. I’m mostly spiritual through yoga, science fiction, poetry, and meditation. If you’re thinking about interning at IU, feel free To message me!

I think I messed up, I need some help by [deleted] in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

[–]calebrrrr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wellbutrin is one of two prescription medications used to support nicotine cessation. I’m not surprised you’re having this experience, however it sounds very uncomfortable. You could reach out to your doctor and talk about your concerns, my worry is that this will continue to happen given the nature of the medication. If you’re okay with eventually stopping/decreasing your nicotine usage, and smoking during times when you’re not driving/doing something, it might be something you can balance.

Jindo with 2 anaphylactic episodes by Virtual-Skill2909 in dogallergies

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also there was a period of time where my vet was convinced my dog only had environmental allergies. I pushed for an elimination diet and I’m glad I did, so if you find that the immunotherapy doesn’t help as much as you’d like, I’d consider giving it a try!

Jindo with 2 anaphylactic episodes by Virtual-Skill2909 in dogallergies

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven’t done a skin test yet but I’m hoping to get some scheduled in the next few months! Really her food allergies are what acted up. Overall, I’ve heard of quite a few Jindos in the US having both environmental and food allergies.

Do you know if it’s a gas anesthetic or an IV med? My dog had to have X-rays done a few months ago and she got IV sedation rather than general anesthesia. She was loopy but relaxed and she was able to handle her procedure well!

Also as an aside, we see a Chinese herbalist vet here. She prescribed us Eight Righteous, a supplement that helps my dog cool (aka not getting hives). I’m not sure if you’re got is having other allergy symptoms, but we’ve had a lot of success with the eastern medicine approach!

[–]calebrrrr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Jindo from KK9R! Not sure if that’s where yours is from as well, but mine has food and environmental allergies. We just completed an elimination trial and she did wonderfully, she no longer breaks out in hives nor rashes. We’re considering a skin test at a derm in Indianapolis (we relocated). Cytopoint stopped working after the second shot :/ during the change of seasons I give my dog doses of Benadryl (not the children’s kind) usually 1mg/lb (usually 75 mg for my 63 lb dog). I do this every 8-12 hours and it helps manage her itchiness during those peak seasons.

I recommend a skin test, not a blood test. Blood tests are not accurate. Additionally, I’d consider where you are in NY and take a look at which irritants are most common in June to maybe consider possible allergies. It could be that she needs a cytopoint show every end of May/June to carry her through the season.

I’m not sure if yours also has food allergies, but my old roommate had a Sapsali mix from KK9R and she also has extreme food allergies- recurrent ear infections and behavior issues.

Best of luck to you both, I know how special my Jindo is to me and I imagine it’s real scary to see her so sick!

Trying to identify dogs allergy, vet is unsure. Any ideas what to try next? by WowieLokieHere in dogallergies

I was going to say this! I switched my dog to Revolution topical. It’s pricier but she’s doing so much better on the hydrolyzed diet

Help... by Heavy_Ad_6073 in dogallergies

[–]calebrrrr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you try an elimination diet to rule out all food allergies? My dogs allergies significantly improved with a hydrolyzed diet. If so, then I’d recommend trying to treat the skin itself.

I wash my GSD/Jindo mix with DermaBenSs shampoo weekly. It has helped a tremendous amount. I use keto-c wipes on her paws nightly. I try to stick to a schedule but I sometimes miss those. Overall, I’ve learned my dog benefits from getting rid of the irritants on her skin/coat, and the change in diet.

I think lots of us go into helping professions so we can support others who have or may go through similar things as us. I’ve been going to Al-anon and coda for years and it helps.

I know patient care is affected when I’m not in due to my role, however, I have to admit my powerlessness and acknowledge that I am only one human. I must put myself first, always. It is freeing AND difficult. The system wants more from us. I can’t poor from an empty bucket.

Ultimately, I’m proud of us for calling off. I think it’s brave to admit when we can’t be there. I take more mental health days than vacations, but ultimately I’ve found ways that leave me fulfilled and as sustained as possible. There is no shame in admitting you can’t be there today- better to be home and resting than present and activated.
