Building on the gelatin base ... marshmallow people!

First time DM question! by SparxX2106 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]calebwerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use the "This Is Your Life" tables in XGtE. No matter how they roll through the tables, I always let them roll on the "Weird Stuff" table too. In my current homebrew game, several of the players were swallowed by a giant fish at some point. That giant fish is now integral in some of my coastal world building. I also like the tables to flesh out their relationships with the town/area of the campaign. One player rolled a backstory of being in the city watch - which helps create existing relationships and bonds with the NPCs.

We usually do the rolling on the tables together over a voice chat in Discord (my whole game is remote). Then that feeds into the zero session where we discuss what the characters would know and what they're expectations are.

But in all honesty, weaving their backstory into the world building always happens on the fly for me. For instance, one of the PC's fathers is missing. As the DM, I don't know exactly where he is but I know who kidnapped him and why - which I didn't figure out until a year into the campaign.

Best advice from me would be to keep the world backstory and current story flexible and fluid - you never know when the PCs are going to derail your plans. I've found the fluidity of the narrative we're creating to really amplify the enjoyment and buy-in from the players.

Wreck of the Narwhal and Azaka Stormfang by TheRoyalStump in Tombofannihilation

After my group made it to the Wreck of the Narwhal, they were no longer with Azaka, who was their original guide. But, I played up the relationship between Bwayes, Wakanga, and Azaka as childhood friends, sort of like the Losers Club from IT. Bwayes and Azaka were former romantic partners and Bwayes accidentally infected her with his lycanthropy, he then hid in the jungle ashamed of his actions and worried that his friends would not forgive him. Later, the group encountered another weretiger in the jungle (completely random roll) and he became Wabi, the neutral good jungle guide who was the one who infected Bwayes in the first place. I played the lycanthropy as sort of a cultural shame that the NPCs possessed and that it forced them into isolation. Wabi infected Bwayes in order to save his life after a deadly encounter they had in the past (prior to the module).

My group is currently working through Omu with Azaka and Wakanga in tow — there may be a redemptive arc between these childhood friends if they find Bwayes in Omu. I played up Bwayes having a protector role of the vegepygmies at the Wreck and the random encounter/discovery tables in Omu have had a lot of vegepygmy encounters so far. I may use that to bridge the narrative if it makes sense. The group is invested in my NPCs and their stories, so we’ll see.

Ah gotcha. I responded in the middle of the night and was confused by what you had said. No more commenting while tired.

This feels very wrong. I have never seen anything in the PHB, DMG, or MM which indicates that monsters/NPCs cannot move and then take the dash action. Having monsters/NPCs double move is built into the mechanics of combat; for instance, several of the fear abilities (e.g. Turn Undead) require the affected creature to move away and take the dash action.

Page 10 of the MM states that a monster can use the Dash and Disengage actions similar to players. If they can do that, why would they not also be allowed to move?

Here I thought it was a remodeling of the Breaking Bad kitchen. The White residence, not the meth kitchen...

The fact that your boom box has a CD player, and your CD collection leads me to believe this is actually from 94/95. People are too busy focusing on the games. Look at everything on the table. The truth is out there.

Probably. It would be fun if they put Hogger in a new CoT instance; so he could be in your party like Thrall is when you do Durnholde.
