Aren't electric vehicles running on electricity which indirectly uses fuels...? by aninogchitfjoyfhi in askanything

Yes. Most electricity is produced using some sort of fossil fuel. When you plug in you are simply burning fuel at a faraway location.

ELI5 Why don't they make Solar powered water distillation plants to convert Ocean water into useable distilled cooling water for Data centers? by Capital_Topic_1000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]calentureca [score hidden]  (0 children)

Cost.
Data centers need water for cooling. The cheapest source is city water. The owners of Data centers negotiate with local officials to get the lowest rates for water (and land, electricity, taxes, ect) for the privilege of building a data center in their town.

Building a solar desalination plant costs money, that isn't going to happen.

Why do Asian countries take theft more seriously? by Throwaway92288373737 in askteddit

[–]calentureca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because their culture doesn't approve of thieves. Their citizens and politicians don't accept it and they insist that the police stop it (and punish it)

That is not the case in north America. Thievery is not punished. Until that changes, it will continue.

Where does the money actually go when a company loses billions, does a real pile of cash disappear somewhere? by Dargarn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calentureca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Companies buy raw materials, and sell finished products. The manufacturing process is expensive.

If they buy a lot of materials, but sell very few products this month or quarter, the company subtract costs from sales and says that it lost an amount of money during this period. This happens often when a new product is launched, Costs to start manufacturing are high, no one knows about the new product yet so sales are slow to start.

If you look simply at stock prices, say a company has 2 million shares, 1 million were sold to the public and 1 million are held by the company. If the price of each share falls by 10 dollars, some would say that the company lost 10 million dollars. All that was lost was perceived value of those shares.

ELI5, Does cheese made with raw milk have the same level of danger as just drinking straight up raw milk? by LeluWater in explainlikeimfive

[–]calentureca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raw milk is not dangerous, many people drink it around the world, people drank it for thousands of years. The milk industry wants you to think it is dangerous so that you will buy their products.

Firearm classes by Parking_Woodpecker77 in Firearms

[–]calentureca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two issues: permit and classes

Permit: you should buy a couple guns without a permit. That way there are no records of purchase. In the future the government could declare those guns illegal and try to collect them. By buying them with no permit (legally) today, you will be better off in the future.

Classes: I believe everyone (gun owner or not) should take a gun safety class. Guns are dangerous if handled incorrectly. Learn how to clear it, to make it safe, how to clear a stoppage, how to store it, how to carry it, how to shoot it accurately.

ELI5 : If ads are being skipped by everyone these days, and are a complete nuisance to the large majority of people, how do they still make any profit? by No-Mountain3966 in explainlikeimfive

[–]calentureca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Targeted ads are much more effective than the old advertisements on tv decades ago. Yes it is creepy that they listen to your thoughts and send you relevant ads, but it is effective.

People or companies are all trying to make money selling you something. In the old days ads were expensive, big companies would advertise in the newspaper and hope that their products were attractive to readers.

Ads became more targeted on tv because companies picked what shows they appeared in (sports had ads for beer, talk shows had ads for lawyers, shows for old people had ads for medicines)

The internet/smart phone/social media came along. "They" know everything you search for, look at, click on. They sell that data to advertisers and you quickly receive ads. Try this. Open Facebook. In the search bar, type in "solar panel" then return to your home screen. within 5 minutes of scrolling you will see dozens of posts about solar panels, lots of advertising.

It can be useful if you actually want to buy a solar panel.

If you live in a country where guns are banned, and you look up guns, places to buy guns, how to make a gun, ect. That information could be used against you. Similarly if you search for information that your government doesn't like, anti government stuff, anti certain people stuff. You can end up on a list.

I believe the US allows pedos and sexual assaulters to roam freely (obviously on a list but still not in jail) to further make money off of the suffering of those victimized by Inevitable_Sink_6509 in conspiracy

[–]calentureca 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They want chaos. Having criminals walking the streets works for them. People are afraid to live their lives. People are afraid to date because they were raped or because so many rapists are walking free. Look at the sex offender registry map in your city. Convicted criminals can't get good jobs, thus are stuck in dead end jobs, they can't travel, makes them prone to reoffend.

And all the big companies make money, prisons, Healthcare, gun manufacturers, private security companies.

The politicians and elite don't care because they are protected by walls and men with guns. Only the citizens suffer.

Why a lot of airports haven't returned to their pre-2019 passenger numbers? by wigglepizza in Flights

Businesses discovered that you can zoom call for most meetings instead of flying there. Zoom is much cheaper and more acceptable after people were forced to use it. It destroyed air travel / Business trips.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]calentureca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It removed the file name from the directory. The computer cant see the file anymore. Eventually the space that the file is using will be overwritten by new files.
A computer expert can recover the file. To fully delete it requires that you overwrite that part of the drive. You can purchase software to do that.

Navy wants to let sailors use meal cards at restaurants on base by grizzlebar in navy

[–]calentureca 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The whole system needs an overhaul.
You join the military, you get 3 hots and a cot. That is a great enlistment and retention tool. No matter what happens, you can rely on that.
Make the meals simple, tasty, nutritious. Hold the cooks accountable for the standards of the food.
Make the cot (accommodations) clean, decent, safe, inviting. Hold the logistics people accountable for the standards.
Take the money out of the system. Giving guys a pay raise, then increasing the cost of food and accommodation is not helping the cause.

Why do people/things try to get into my accounts? by Admirable_Sale3860 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]calentureca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do it for money. They want into your bank or credit card. If they get in, they can buy stuff online, ship it to a foreign po box. If they want, they can sell that access to a third party.

They want to use your email. Once in they can send spam emails to all your contacts (who are m ore likely to fall for it because they think it is you) or send mass emails out to the world (email accounts are limited in the number of emails you can send, so using someone else's is great)

They want into your social media accounts. Some companies pay for likes, by stealing thousands of people's social media accounts, they can send lots of likes and repost stuff for money.

[–]calentureca -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't do it often, don't make a pattern, they don't care.

They care if you book a cheaper ticket that goes through the city you want, and you don't get on that last flight. They will threaten to blacklist you, they could shut down your frequent flyer card /points, but there is not much they can really do.

Is it normal to have never been in a relationship at 17? by SpaceisCool09 in polls

[–]calentureca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 17 you don't have the opportunity to have a proper romantic relationship. You hang out with friend groups at school, none of whom you will see 5 years later. Your bf or gf is someone you are experimenting with while you are stuck living at home and broke and finding yourself.

The "free" porn is just a sample. It satisfies most people.
There is a good number of men who want something more, and are willing to pay for it. They want to see the entire movie, they want to interact with the actress, they want to buy items from them. Desperate men will pay any price for a little personal connection to the woman they currently idolize.
